Chapter 12: The Betrayal Inside My Bloodline

I stared at the signature.

My hands became numb.

No.

It couldn’t be.

The name sat there in black ink.

Robert Carter.

My father.

I pushed the document away.

“No.””

Karen looked terrified.

“Emma—”

“No.””

I stood up.

“My father would never do this.””

Karen didn’t argue.

That scared me.

Because if she had laughed or defended herself, I could have hated her easier.

But she just looked sad.

“Ask him.””

I left before she could say anything else.

The entire drive home, I repeated the same sentence in my head.

My father would never betray me.

He raised me alone.

He protected me.

He was the person who came when I called.

The person who stood between me and Michael.

The person who held Sophie when she cried.

He was my safe place.

He couldn’t be part of this.

When I arrived home, he was sitting on the porch.

The moment he saw my face, he stood.

“What happened?””

I held up the document.

His expression changed.

Not confusion.

Recognition.

That was enough.

My heart broke.

“Dad.””

He looked away.

“Emma…”

“No.””

My voice shook.

“Tell me I’m wrong.””

He stayed silent.

That silence destroyed me.

I stepped back.

“How?””

He sat down slowly.

“I never wanted you to know.””

My eyes filled with tears.

“You knew?””

“Yes.””

The word barely left his mouth.

I felt like the ground disappeared.

“You knew about Michael?””

“I knew about the agreement.””

“What agreement?””

He rubbed his hands together.

“The one he created before you met.””

I couldn’t understand.

“You signed something that gave him permission to use me.””

“No.””

His voice became urgent.

“Emma, listen to me.””

“Then explain!””

He looked at me.

“I signed it because I thought I was protecting you.””

I laughed through tears.

“Protecting me?””

He nodded.

“I didn’t know his real intentions.””

“Then what did you know?””

He looked down.

“Michael came to me first.””

My breath stopped.

“What?””

“He said he wanted to marry you.””

“When?””

“Before he met you.””

The words cut deeper than anything.

My father continued.

“He told me he loved you.””

I shook my head.

“He didn’t even know me.””

“I know that now.””

“Why would you believe him?””

My father closed his eyes.

“Because he reminded me of myself when I was younger.””

That answer hurt.

“You saw yourself in him.””

“Yes.””

“And you trusted him.””

“Yes.””

“More than you trusted me?””

His face broke.

“No.””

But the damage was already there.

I wiped my tears.

“Then why hide it?””

“Because after you married him, I started seeing things.””

“What things?””

“The money.””

“The lies.””

“The way he controlled you.””

I stared at him.

“Then why didn’t you tell me?””

His voice cracked.

“Because I was afraid.””

I had never heard my father say that before.

“Afraid of what?””

“That if I confronted him, he would hurt you.””

The porch became silent.

“So you waited.””

“Yes.””

“You watched.””

“Yes.””

I turned away.

Because the truth was too painful.

My father wasn’t the person who planned my destruction.

But he had helped create the cage.

Then his phone rang.

He looked at the screen.

His face changed.

“What?””

I looked at him.

“Who is it?””

He didn’t answer.

The phone kept ringing.

Finally, he picked up.

“Hello?””

A few seconds passed.

Then my father’s face went pale.

“Where?””

My heart raced.

“Dad?””

He ended the call.

“Emma…”

“What happened?””

He looked toward the street.

And whispered:

“Michael escaped custody.””

My blood ran cold.

Then my father said the words that made every hair on my body stand.

“He’s coming here.””
