Chapter 15: The Truth We All Buried
Three days later, Michael was back in custody.
The house was quiet again.
But it didn’t feel like home yet.
Not completely.
Some things take time to become safe again.
Sophie was healing.
She started sleeping with her bedroom door open.
She started drawing pictures again.
She started laughing.
Small things.
But important things.
My father and I sat at the kitchen table.
The same table where so many secrets had been uncovered.
“I owe you the truth.””
I looked at him.
“Yes.””
He nodded.
“I was wrong.””
Those words were difficult for him.
My father was the kind of man who fixed problems.
He wasn’t the kind of man who admitted he created them.
But he did.
“The agreement Michael showed me wasn’t what I thought it was.””
“What did you think it was?””
“He told me he wanted to prove he was serious about you.””
I looked down.
“He manipulated you too.””
“Yes.””
My father sighed.
“But there was something else.””
He pulled out an old document.
“I knew Michael’s father.””
I froze.
“What?””
“Years ago.””
“How?””
“They worked together.””
My father looked at the paper.
“Michael didn’t choose you because of your money.””
I looked up.
“Then why?””
“Because of me.””
The room went silent.
“He wanted revenge.””
I stared.
“Against you?””
My father nodded.
“His father blamed me for losing everything.””
I shook my head.
“That doesn’t make sense.””
“I know.””
“Did you do something?””
My father looked away.
“No.””
His voice was quiet.
“But I refused to help him when his company collapsed.””
I understood.
Michael didn’t see it as business.
He saw it as betrayal.
“He spent years planning this.””
“Yes.””
My father looked at me.
“And I never knew he chose you because of my past.””
I thought about Michael.
The lies.
The manipulation.
The years stolen.
“He didn’t love me.””
My father looked sad.
“No.””
The answer hurt.
But strangely, it also freed me.
Because for so long, I had wondered what I did wrong.
Why I wasn’t enough.
Why love disappeared.
But the truth was simpler.
I was never the problem.
I was just the person he chose.
A few weeks later, the trial began.
Vanessa testified.
Rachel testified.
Karen testified.
Even my father testified.
The truth came out piece by piece.
Not quickly.
Not easily.
But completely.
Michael was finally forced to face everything he had done.
And me?
I rebuilt.
Slowly.
One day at a time.
Months later, Sophie and I stood in our backyard planting flowers.
She pressed a small seed into the soil.
“Mommy?””
“Yes?””
“Are we safe now?””
I looked at her.
At the little girl who had saved me before I saved myself.
“Yes.””
She smiled.
“Really?””
I nodded.
“Really.””
That evening, I found an old box of photographs.
I almost threw it away.
Then I opened it.
Inside was a picture from before Michael.
Before the lies.
Before the fear.
A picture of me smiling.
A version of myself I thought I had lost forever.
But she was still there.
She had just been waiting.
My phone buzzed.
A message from an unknown number.
For a moment, my heart stopped.
Old fear.
Old memories.
Then I opened it.
It was from Karen.
Only one sentence.
*I found something else Michael left behind.*
I stared at the message.
Part of me wanted to ignore it.
To close that chapter forever.
But another part of me knew something.
Secrets had taken years from my life.
I wasn’t going to let them take another day.
I replied:
*What did you find?*
The answer came seconds later.
And when I read it, I realized Michael’s final secret wasn’t about money.
It wasn’t about revenge.
May you like
It was about the one person who had been missing from his story all along.
His first victim.
