Chapter 6: The Father’s Final Move
Richard Whitmore invited himself into the conference room.
That was the kind of man he was.
He never entered a room.
He took control of it.
He placed his expensive coat over a chair and looked at me like we were negotiating a business deal.
Not discussing my missing sister.
Not discussing decades of lies.
“Sit down, Ethan.””
I stayed standing.
“You don’t get to order me around.””
A small smile appeared on his face.
“There’s your father’s stubbornness.””
“My father’s stubbornness built the company you wanted.””
Richard’s smile disappeared.
“Your father stole that company from me.””
Daniel, who had followed us inside, immediately responded.
“That is legally false.””
Richard ignored him.
“Lawyers love paperwork. They don’t understand history.””
I looked at Vanessa.
“Did you know he was going to do this?””
She looked down.
That was enough.
“You did.””
Her voice was barely audible.
“I knew he wanted the company.””
“And you still came into my life?””
Tears appeared in her eyes.
“I thought I could control the situation.””
I shook my head.
“You thought you could control me.””
She didn’t deny it.
Richard leaned forward.
“Ethan, you’re angry because you discovered a few secrets.””
“A few?””
“You have no idea what your parents sacrificed.””
“My sister was sacrificed.””
The room went quiet.
For the first time, Richard looked uncomfortable.
Just for a second.
Then it vanished.
“You’re emotional.””
“No. I’m awake.””
Daniel placed the documents on the table.
“Mr. Whitmore, you should leave.””
Richard laughed.
“You still think rules matter.””
“They do.””
“No.””
He looked at me.
“People with power decide which rules survive.””
I stared at him.
“That’s what you taught Vanessa?””
His daughter flinched.
Richard ignored her.
“I taught her not to be weak.””
I looked at Vanessa.
“And that’s why you tore up my mother’s letter?””
She whispered, “I thought it would destroy everything.””
“It did.””
She looked at me.
“I’m sorry.””
The apology came too late.
Before I could respond, Daniel’s phone rang.
He answered.
Then his expression changed.
“What?””
Everyone looked at him.
He listened silently.
Then he ended the call.
“What happened?”” my father asked.
Daniel looked at me.
“The company transfer was challenged.””
My heart dropped.
“By who?””
He opened his laptop.
“The lawsuit was filed this morning.””
“Who filed it?””
Daniel turned the screen.
The name appeared.
*Lily Hale.*
I stared.
“That doesn’t make sense.””
My sister had just called me.
She wanted the truth.
Why would she attack us?
Daniel looked troubled.
“There’s more.””
He clicked another file.
A scanned document appeared.
A signature at the bottom.
My blood went cold.
Because I recognized the handwriting.
It belonged to my mother.
My father stepped closer.
“No.””
Daniel looked at him.
“This document says Mrs. Hale willingly gave up parental rights twenty-eight years ago.””
My mother covered her mouth.
“That isn’t real.””
Richard quietly picked up his coat.
And for the first time that day, he smiled.
“Now you understand.””
I looked at him.
“What did you do?””
He walked toward the door.
“I didn’t create this war, Ethan.””
He stopped.
“I simply made sure your family would destroy itself.””
The door closed behind him.
And on the screen, beneath the fake signature, was one more line.
A witness name.
May you like
The person who claimed to see my mother sign.
*Vanessa Whitmore.*
