Chapter 3: The Name on the Hidden Document

The wedding never happened.

By midnight, the flowers were being removed, the champagne glasses were empty, and the ballroom that was supposed to celebrate my future had become the place where my past was exposed.

The next morning, my father and I sat inside Hale Industries’ headquarters.

The building was made of glass and steel.

A symbol of everything he had built.

But I couldn’t stop thinking about one thing.

My fiancée knew something.

“You should have told me,” I said.

My father looked out over the city.

“I wanted to protect you.””

“From what?””

He turned around.

“From becoming like us.””

That answer hurt more than I expected.

I had spent my entire life believing my parents were hiding their success.

Now I realized they were hiding their enemies.

Daniel arrived carrying another folder.

“I found something last night.””

He placed it on the table.

“What?””

“A clause in the original company agreement.””

My father’s expression changed.

“What clause?””

Daniel looked at him.

“The inheritance protection clause.””

I opened the folder.

There was a document dated twenty-five years earlier.

My name appeared on the page.

My heart stopped.

“Why is my name here?””

My father sat down.

“Because your grandfather knew what could happen.””

I looked at him.

“What could happen?””

Daniel answered.

“If someone from the Whitmore family attempted to gain control of Hale Industries through marriage or manipulation, the transfer would be redirected.””

I stared.

“Redirected to who?””

Nobody spoke.

Then Daniel turned the page.

I read the name.

Not mine.

Not my father’s.

Someone else’s.

“That’s impossible.””

My mother entered the room quietly.

“I was hoping you wouldn’t have to find out this way.””

I looked at her.

“Who is it?””

She sat across from me.

“Your older sister.””

I froze.

“What older sister?””

The silence that followed felt unreal.

My entire life, I had been an only child.

At least, that was what I believed.

My mother’s eyes filled with tears.

“Her name is Lily.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

“She was born before you.””

“Why didn’t I know?””

My father closed his eyes.

“Because we lost her.””

The words hit me.

“Lost her?””

My mother held the table.

“Twenty-eight years ago, when everything with Richard happened, Lily was taken from us.””

I stared at them.

“What are you saying?””

Daniel spoke carefully.

“The documents show Lily survived.””

The room went silent.

My father looked at the floor.

“We thought she was gone.””

My hands trembled.

“You thought?””

My mother reached for me.

“But she wasn’t.””

A thousand questions filled my mind.

Where had she been?

Why was she hidden?

Why did Vanessa know more about my family than I did?

Then my phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

“Hello?””

A woman’s voice came through.

“Ethan Hale?””

I stood.

“Yes.””

There was a pause.

Then:

“I’m calling because I think you deserve to know the truth about Vanessa Whitmore.””

My chest tightened.

“Who is this?””

Another pause.

Then the woman said:

“My name is Lily.””

I couldn’t breathe.

My mother covered her mouth.

The voice continued.

“And your fiancée has been searching for me for months.””

The call went silent.

Then Lily whispered:

“Ethan… Vanessa didn’t tear up that letter because she was angry.””

I gripped the phone.

“Then why?””

May you like

Her answer came softly.

“Because she knew exactly what was written inside.””
