Chapter 10: The Daughter Who Was Never Supposed to Win
I read the name again.
Then again.
Vanessa Whitmore.
The ink on the document didn’t change.
The world around me seemed to slow down.
“You’re the beneficiary?””
Vanessa nodded.
But she didn’t look proud.
She looked terrified.
“I didn’t know until last week.””
I closed the folder.
“No.””
She looked at me.
“Ethan—”
“No.””
My voice was sharper than I intended.
“You expect me to believe that?””
“I expected you to hate me.””
“Because you know what you did.””
Her eyes dropped.
“Yes.””
The café was almost empty.
Two people sat near the window.
A barista wiped down the counter.
The world kept moving while mine felt frozen.
“You were going to marry me,” I said.
“I know.””
“You were going to become connected to my family.””
“I know.””
“You knew about Lily.””
“Yes.””
Every answer made it worse.
“Then why should I believe anything you say now?””
Vanessa looked like she wanted to argue.
But she didn’t.
Instead, she opened the folder again.
“Because this is what my father never wanted me to find.””
She turned the page.
I looked closer.
It was an amendment to the original company agreement.
My father’s signature.
My mother’s signature.
And another signature.
My grandmother’s.
“What is this?””
Vanessa swallowed.
“The protection clause.””
“I know about that.””
“No.””
She pointed to a paragraph.
“You know the version Daniel found.””
I read the words carefully.
My eyes stopped.
*In the event of conflict between direct heirs, ownership shall transfer to the individual who demonstrates no intent to use the company for personal control or financial gain.*
I looked up.
“What does that mean?””
Vanessa gave a bitter smile.
“It means Richard thought he was creating a loophole.””
“And?””
“And he accidentally created a test.””
I stared at the document.
“The beneficiary isn’t permanent.””
“No.””
“Then why does your name appear?””
“Because my father tried to force the outcome.””
My stomach tightened.
“How?””
Vanessa looked away.
“Forgery.””
The word sat between us.
“Your father forged the documents?””
“My father forged my signature.””
I didn’t respond.
For the first time, I saw something different in Vanessa.
Not arrogance.
Not cruelty.
Shame.
“He wanted me to marry you,” she said.
“Why?””
“Because he believed the company would transfer to me after marriage.””
“That doesn’t make sense.””
“It does if he controlled me.””
I leaned back.
“Explain.””
Vanessa looked at the table.
“My entire life, Richard taught me one thing.””
“What?””
“That everything has a price.””
She laughed quietly.
“Even love.””
I remembered all the times she had dismissed my parents.
All the times she measured people by status.
“Did you believe him?””
She was silent.
Then:
“Yes.””
The honesty surprised me.
“I hated how my father treated people,” she continued.
“But I thought that was how successful people survived.””
“And now?””
“Now I know he was just afraid.””
I frowned.
“Afraid of what?””
Vanessa looked at me.
“Losing.””
A notification appeared on her phone.
She glanced down.
Her face changed.
“What?””
She turned the screen toward me.
A message from Richard.
*You spoke to him.*
My chest tightened.
“He knows?””
Vanessa nodded.
“He always knows.””
The next message appeared.
*Come home. We need to discuss your future.*
Vanessa locked the phone.
“I can’t go.””
“Why?””
She looked at me.
“Because if I go back, I won’t leave.””
That was when I understood.
Richard didn’t control people with money.
He controlled them with fear.
“Help us,” I said.
She looked surprised.
“You still want my help?””
“No.””
I paused.
“I want the truth.””
Vanessa’s eyes filled.
“I have one condition.””
“What?””
“When this is over…”
She looked down.
“Don’t let my father decide who I become.””
Before I could answer, Daniel called.
I picked up.
“Ethan.””
His voice sounded urgent.
“What happened?””
“We found the original birth records.””
I stood.
“For Lily?””
“No.””
A pause.
“For you.””
My heart stopped.
“What about me?””
May you like
Daniel lowered his voice.
“Ethan, your birth certificate was altered.””
