Chapter 13: The Last Game Richard Played
The message stayed on my phone.
*Bring Lily. Come alone.*
Three seconds later, my father grabbed my arm.
“No.””
I looked at him.
“Vanessa needs help.””
“And Richard wants exactly what he always wanted.””
My father’s voice was different.
Not angry.
Afraid.
“He wants control.””
Lily stood quietly near the table.
“He wants me.””
Everyone looked at her.
She didn’t look scared.
That surprised me.
After everything Richard had taken from her, after twenty-eight years of lies, she looked calmer than any of us.
“Lily,” my mother whispered.
“He spent my entire life making me afraid of him.””
She looked at the phone.
“I’m done being afraid.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“We cannot let you go alone.””
“I have to.””
“No.””
Lily looked at him.
“Daniel, if Richard thinks he has control, he will talk.””
“And if he thinks he doesn’t?””
“He will run.””
Nobody liked the plan.
But everyone understood it.
Richard Whitmore was not dangerous because he was violent.
He was dangerous because he believed every person had a weakness.
He found it.
He bought it.
He used it.
And now he thought Lily was still the frightened child he stole.
He didn’t know her anymore.
Neither did we.
Two hours later, we arrived at an abandoned warehouse near the river.
The building looked exactly like something Richard would choose.
Cold.
Empty.
Forgotten.
My father parked a block away.
Daniel checked his phone.
“We have people nearby.””
I looked at him.
“People?””
“Authorities.””
Lily nodded.
“Good.””
I looked at her.
“You knew?””
She smiled sadly.
“Richard taught me something.””
“What?””
“Always have a plan after someone thinks they’ve won.””
We entered the warehouse.
Richard stood in the center.
Vanessa was sitting in a chair nearby.
She looked exhausted but unharmed.
The moment she saw me, she shook her head.
“Ethan, don’t.””
Richard smiled.
“Still trying to protect him.””
Vanessa looked away.
“You were right about one thing.””
Richard raised an eyebrow.
“What?””
“I was weak.””
He laughed.
“No.””
He walked toward her.
“You were obedient.””
Vanessa’s face changed.
“I was your daughter.””
“And I gave you everything.””
“No.””
Her voice grew stronger.
“You gave me fear.””
Richard looked annoyed.
Then he saw Lily.
Everything changed.
For the first time, his confidence disappeared.
“You.””
Lily stopped.
“Hello, Richard.””
He stared at her.
“You should have stayed gone.””
The words hit harder than any threat.
My hands clenched.
But Lily didn’t react.
“You mean I should have stayed where you put me.””
Richard smiled.
“You don’t understand what happened.””
“No.””
She stepped closer.
“I understand exactly.””
He looked at me.
“Ethan, you have no idea what she’s been told.””
I laughed.
“You mean by the woman you kidnapped?””
His jaw tightened.
“I protected her.””
“You stole her.””
Richard looked at Lily.
“She was sick.””
“She was a child.””
“She needed someone.””
“She needed her parents.””
Silence.
Richard’s expression hardened.
Then he reached into his coat.
My body tensed.
But he pulled out a document.
“Everything ends with paperwork.””
Of course.
Even now.
He believed paper was more powerful than truth.
He held it toward Lily.
“Sign this.””
She didn’t move.
“What is it?””
“Your agreement to withdraw the lawsuit.””
“No.””
Richard sighed.
“Don’t make this emotional.””
She laughed.
“You took my childhood and you’re telling me not to be emotional?””
His face darkened.
“You have no idea what your parents did.””
Lily looked at him.
“I know everything.””
Richard froze.
“What?””
She smiled slightly.
“I know about the confession.””
The color left his face.
For the first time, Richard Whitmore looked human.
Not powerful.
Not untouchable.
Just caught.
“You stole that.””
Vanessa answered.
“I did.””
He looked at his daughter.
“You?””
“Yes.””
“You would betray me?””
Vanessa looked at him.
“No.””
She took a breath.
“I finally stopped letting you control me.””
Richard stared at her.
Then at Lily.
Then at me.
And I knew.
The game had changed.
He no longer had secrets.
But people like Richard didn’t surrender.
They destroyed.
He suddenly smiled.
“You think this proves everything?””
Daniel’s voice came through the warehouse speakers.
“Yes.””
Richard turned.
Security lights flashed on.
Police officers entered from the side doors.
Richard looked around.
Then laughed.
“You brought witnesses.””
I stepped forward.
“No.””
I looked at him.
“We brought the truth.””
Richard’s smile faded.
Because for the first time in his life, he couldn’t buy it.
He couldn’t threaten it.
He couldn’t hide it.
But before the officers reached him, he looked directly at me.
May you like
And whispered:
“Ask your father why he really let me take her.””
