Chapter 4: The Sister Who Returned

I couldn’t move.

The voice on the phone belonged to a stranger.

But the name she spoke belonged to my family.

Lily.

My older sister.

The person I was never supposed to know existed.

“Where are you?”” I whispered.

There was a long silence.

Then she answered, “A place where I spent most of my life wondering why my parents forgot me.””

My chest tightened.

“My parents didn’t forget you.””

The words came out automatically.

But even I didn’t believe them.

Lily laughed softly.

It wasn’t a happy laugh.

It was the kind someone makes after hearing a lie too many times.

“Ethan, you don’t know me.””

I looked at my parents.

My mother was crying silently.

My father stood frozen beside the window.

“How do you know Vanessa?”” I asked.

“She found me.””

“When?””

“Six months ago.””

My grip tightened around the phone.

“Why?””

Lily didn’t answer immediately.

When she did, her voice was quieter.

“Because she needed something only I could give her.””

“What?””

“A signature.””

The room went silent.

Daniel stepped closer.

“What signature?”” he asked.

I put the phone on speaker.

Lily heard him.

“Daniel Mercer.””

The attorney’s face changed.

“You know me?””

“I know everyone who was involved.””

My father took a step forward.

“Lily?””

The phone went quiet.

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Then:

“Dad?””

My father covered his mouth.

It was the first time I had ever seen him look completely broken.

“I’m sorry,” he whispered.

A shaky breath came through the speaker.

“You said that twenty-eight years ago.””

My mother sat down.

“We looked for you.””

“No.””

The single word cut through the room.

“You looked for a story that made you feel better.””

My father closed his eyes.

“That’s not true.””

“Then tell Ethan the truth.””

I looked between them.

“What truth?””

Nobody answered.

That scared me.

More than the missing sister.

More than Vanessa.

More than the company.

Because secrets only survived when everyone agreed to protect them.

Finally, Lily spoke.

“Richard Whitmore didn’t just try to take your father’s company.””

Daniel’s expression hardened.

“He took someone else.””

My father looked down.

“No.””

Lily continued.

“He took me.””

My stomach dropped.

“What?””

My mother started crying.

“Lily…”

“He told me my parents abandoned me.””

The room felt colder.

“He told me Dad chose money over me. He told me Mom didn’t want a sick child.””

My mother covered her face.

“That’s a lie.””

“I know that now.””

I stared at the phone.

“How did Vanessa know?””

Lily answered immediately.

“Because Richard told her.””

A terrible realization formed.

Vanessa didn’t accidentally become part of my family’s story.

She came looking for the ending.

“What did she want from you?”” I asked.

Lily sighed.

“The company.””

Daniel opened the folder again.

“The inheritance clause.””

“Yes.””

I looked at him.

“What does Lily have to do with it?””

Daniel pointed at the document.

“The clause requires approval from all direct heirs.””

My blood ran cold.

“She needed Lily’s signature.””

Lily answered.

“And I refused.””

A strange calm came over me.

For the first time that night, things made sense.

Vanessa wasn’t offended by the letter.

She wasn’t embarrassed.

She was desperate.

“She destroyed the letter because she thought it would expose her,” Lily said.

I looked at the torn pieces still sitting on the table.

“What was written inside?””

Lily was quiet.

Then she said:

“The letter was proof that your mother never abandoned me.””

My mother broke down.

“And Vanessa knew if you read it, you would never marry her.””

I closed my eyes.

The woman I planned to spend my life with had spent months searching for my sister.

Not to bring my family together.

To use her.

My phone buzzed.

A message appeared.

Unknown number.

I opened it.

One sentence.

*You need to talk to me before Lily tells you everything.*

The number belonged to Vanessa.
