Chapter 11: The Child Hidden in Plain Sight

The first thing I felt was anger.

Not confusion.

Not fear.

Anger.

Because every time I thought I finally understood my family, another secret appeared.

I arrived at Daniel’s office thirty minutes later.

My parents were already there.

Lily stood by the window.

Nobody looked surprised.

That bothered me.

“You all knew?””

My mother immediately shook her head.

“No.””

“Then why does everyone look like they expected this?””

My father looked exhausted.

“Because we always knew Richard would come after you eventually.””

I looked at the documents on Daniel’s desk.

“What is it?””

Daniel removed his glasses.

“The original birth records were sealed after your sister disappeared.””

“And mine?””

He hesitated.

“That’s where things become complicated.””

I hated that phrase.

“What does it say?””

Daniel opened the file.

“Your legal name is Ethan Hale.””

I waited.

“But?””

He looked at Lily.

“Your biological records show something else.””

I stared.

“What else?””

My mother started crying.

My father closed his eyes.

Daniel answered.

“You were not born nine years after Lily.””

The room went silent.

I felt dizzy.

“What?””

“You were born eighteen months after her.””

I laughed.

Not because it was funny.

Because my mind refused to accept it.

“That’s impossible.””

Lily stepped closer.

“Ethan.””

I looked at her.

“Your memories were changed.””

The words felt unreal.

“My memories?””

Daniel nodded.

“Not medically. Legally.””

He showed me another document.

A court record.

“After Lily disappeared, Richard manipulated the records around your family.””

“Why?””

My father answered.

“Because he wanted us isolated.””

I looked at him.

“How does changing my age do that?””

Daniel pointed.

“Because the inheritance clause depended on the order of heirs.””

I understood.

Slowly.

Richard didn’t just want the company.

He wanted to erase the person who came before me.

Lily.

My sister.

The rightful first heir.

“He wanted everyone to believe I was the only child.””

“Yes.””

My hands shook.

“What happened after Lily disappeared?””

My mother wiped her tears.

“We found out we were expecting you.””

I looked at her.

“You knew?””

“Yes.””

“Then why hide the truth from me?””

She broke.

“Because Richard threatened us.””

The room went quiet.

“He said if we told you about Lily, he would destroy everything.””

My father added:

“He said he would make sure you grew up believing you were unwanted.””

I looked at Lily.

And suddenly, I understood.

Richard didn’t only steal her childhood.

He tried to steal mine too.

My phone buzzed.

A video file.

Unknown sender.

I opened it.

Richard appeared on the screen.

Sitting behind his desk.

Smiling.

“Ethan.””

Everyone gathered around.

His voice filled the room.

“I know you found the records.””

I felt cold.

“I also know you’re angry.””

He leaned forward.

“But anger makes people careless.””

The video continued.

“Your parents told you I destroyed your family.””

He smiled.

“They forgot to tell you what they did first.””

My father stood.

“Turn it off.””

I didn’t.

Richard continued.

“Ask your mother why she begged me to take Lily away.””

My mother gasped.

“No.””

The video ended.

Nobody moved.

Lily looked at my mother.

Not with anger.

With pain.

“Is that true?””

My mother shook her head.

“No.””

“Then why would he say that?””

My mother looked at the floor.

May you like

And after twenty-eight years of silence, she finally whispered:

“Because I did ask him.””
