Chapter 7: The Folder That Changed Everything

The woman who entered the auditorium looked completely calm.

That somehow made the moment even more frightening.

She wasn’t rushing.

She wasn’t angry.

She simply walked down the aisle holding a dark folder against her side.

Chloe looked like she wanted to disappear.

Daniel stared at her.

“Who is that?””

Nobody answered.

The woman stopped beside the stage and looked at Michael.

“Are you sure you want to do this today?””

Michael nodded.

“I am.””

She turned toward the audience.

“My name is Rebecca Collins. I’m an attorney who was contacted during an independent review of several financial matters involving Chloe Bennett.””

Daniel’s face tightened.

“Financial matters?””

Chloe immediately stepped forward.

“This is inappropriate.””

Rebecca didn’t react.

“Inappropriate would have been allowing someone to continue hiding the truth.””

The auditorium became silent again.

I looked at Michael.

“How did you know about all this?””

He looked down.

“I didn’t know everything.””

Then he looked at me.

“But I knew something felt wrong.””

Rebecca opened the folder.

“Several months ago, Michael requested information about his college savings account.””

Daniel looked confused.

“I handled those accounts.””

Rebecca nodded.

“Yes. You did.””

Her eyes moved toward Chloe.

“But someone else attempted to make changes.””

A wave of whispers moved through the room.

Chloe crossed her arms.

“This is ridiculous.””

Rebecca looked at her.

“Then you won’t mind answering a few questions.””

Chloe said nothing.

Rebecca continued.

“The account had a request submitted to redirect communication notices.””

Daniel frowned.

“To where?””

Rebecca looked at him.

“To an address Chloe controlled.””

The silence afterward was heavier than before.

Daniel stepped back.

“Why?””

Chloe looked away.

“I was helping manage things.””

Michael shook his head.

“You weren’t helping.””

She looked at him.

“You think you understand everything.””

“No.””

His voice remained calm.

“I understand enough.””

Rebecca pulled out another document.

“This was not only about access.””

She paused.

“There was also a pattern of interference.””

Daniel looked at her.

“What pattern?””

“Attempts to create distance between Michael and his mother.””

My chest tightened.

I didn’t want to hear more.

Not because I doubted it.

Because I suddenly realized how long I had been fighting something I couldn’t see.

Rebecca continued.

“Messages were sent suggesting Laura was unreliable. Conversations were encouraged that made Michael question his mother’s support.””

Daniel looked horrified.

“Chloe…”

She immediately turned toward him.

“You’re acting like I’m some villain.””

Nobody spoke.

Then Michael said quietly:

“I never called you that.””

Chloe looked at him.

“But your actions matter.””

Her expression changed.

For the first time, she looked less angry and more desperate.

“Michael, you don’t understand.””

“Then explain.””

She opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

Rebecca closed the folder.

“There is also one more issue.””

Daniel looked exhausted.

“What now?””

Rebecca looked at Chloe.

“The documents discovered during the review suggest that Chloe was not only trying to control information.””

She paused.

“She was trying to change the story about who supported Michael financially.””

The audience reacted.

I looked at Michael.

He looked disappointed.

Not shocked.

Like some part of him had already accepted it.

Daniel sat down.

“My whole family…”

He stopped.

He couldn’t finish.

Chloe’s eyes filled with tears.

“I was afraid.””

Nobody expected that.

Her voice became smaller.

“I was afraid I would never matter.””

Michael looked at her.

“Chloe…”

“I saw how everyone looked at your mom.””

She wiped her eyes.

“She was the person everyone praised.””

Her voice cracked.

“And I thought if I could make people see her differently, maybe they would finally see me.””

The auditorium became quiet.

For a moment, I almost felt sorry for her.

Almost.

Then I remembered the empty seat.

The years of whispers.

The way she tried to make my son question my love.

Michael spoke softly.

“Being loved doesn’t require destroying someone else.””

Chloe looked down.

Rebecca stepped back.

“Michael, the choice now is yours.””

Everyone looked at him.

“The school has enough information to move forward with their review.””

Michael nodded.

“But I don’t want revenge.””

He looked toward me.

“I just wanted my mom’s truth to be heard.””

My eyes filled again.

Then Rebecca’s phone suddenly rang.

She answered.

Her expression changed after only a few seconds.

“What?””

She listened.

Then looked directly at Chloe.

“That’s impossible.””

Chloe’s face turned pale.

Daniel noticed.

“What happened?””

Rebecca slowly lowered the phone.

“The person who helped Chloe hide this information…”

May you like

She paused.

“…was not acting alone.””
