Chapter 12: The Secret Daniel Buried for Years
Daniel looked like he had aged ten years in a few minutes.
He didn’t deny it.
He didn’t ask what Rebecca meant.
He just stared at the table.
And that told me everything.
I whispered:
“What did you hide?””
Daniel closed his eyes.
“I never wanted you to know.””
The sentence hurt more than the truth itself.
Because it meant he had chosen silence.
For years.
Michael leaned forward.
“Dad.””
Daniel looked at him.
“I was afraid.””
“Afraid of what?””
Daniel looked at me.
“Losing you.””
I almost laughed.
Not because it was funny.
Because it was impossible.
“You were afraid of losing me?””
My voice shook.
“Daniel, you were the one who left.””
He nodded.
“I know.””
“Then what is this?””
He took a deep breath.
“The reason I left wasn’t because I stopped loving you.””
The room went silent.
I stared at him.
“What?””
Daniel looked down.
“I thought I had ruined everything.””
Michael frowned.
“Explain.””
Daniel rubbed his hands together.
“Before the divorce, I made a financial mistake.””
I waited.
“I lost money.””
“How much?””
He hesitated.
“A lot.””
I felt my chest tighten.
“And you thought leaving would fix it?””
“No.””
He shook his head.
“I thought I was protecting you.””
I stared at him.
“By making me believe you didn’t want us?””
His eyes filled.
“Yes.””
Michael looked angry.
“That makes no sense.””
“I know.””
Daniel’s voice cracked.
“I was ashamed.””
Rebecca listened carefully.
“So Greg knew about this?””
Daniel nodded.
“Yes.””
“And Rachel?””
“Yes.””
I understood then.
The pieces connected.
They didn’t just know about our marriage.
They knew Daniel’s weakness.
His fear.
His shame.
And they used it.
Michael looked at me.
“Mom…”
I shook my head.
“I’m trying to understand.””
Daniel looked at me.
“I wanted to come back.””
The words hung in the air.
“Then why didn’t you?””
He looked away.
“Because by then, Greg and Rachel convinced me you were happier without me.””
I stared at him.
“They convinced you?””
Daniel nodded.
“They showed me messages.””
My eyes narrowed.
“What messages?””
Daniel froze.
Rebecca immediately noticed.
“What?””
Daniel looked uncomfortable.
“They were messages between you and someone.””
My stomach dropped.
“Who?””
Daniel swallowed.
“That’s the part I never understood.””
Michael stood.
“Dad.””
Daniel whispered:
“The messages weren’t real.””
Everyone went silent.
Rebecca looked shocked.
“Are you saying they were fabricated?””
Daniel nodded.
“Yes.””
A terrible silence filled the room.
Someone had not only destroyed my marriage.
They had built a fake reality around it.
Michael looked at Rebecca.
“Can we prove it?””
She nodded slowly.
“That is exactly what we are investigating.””
Then her phone rang.
She answered.
This time, her expression changed immediately.
“What?””
She listened.
Then stood.
“We need to leave.””
Daniel looked alarmed.
“Why?””
Rebecca looked at Michael.
“Because Greg was found.””
A moment of relief passed.
Then she continued.
“But he wasn’t alone.””
My heart stopped.
“Who was with him?””
Rebecca looked at me.
May you like
And said the one name I never expected to hear.
“Your old best friend, Emily.””
