Chapter 4: The Witness Chloe Never Expected
The woman standing in the doorway looked familiar, but I couldn’t place her.
She was in her early fifties, wearing a simple blue dress and holding a small handbag against her chest.
For a moment, nobody moved.
Then Chloe whispered something I could barely hear.
“No…”
It was the first time I had seen fear on her face.
Not annoyance.
Not arrogance.
Fear.
Michael stepped away from the microphone and walked toward the woman.
“Thank you for coming, Mrs. Harper.””
The woman nodded.
“I almost didn’t.””
Her voice carried across the silent auditorium.
“But after everything your mother sacrificed, I couldn’t stay quiet.””
I looked at Michael.
“Who is she?””
He squeezed my hand.
“Mom, this is Linda Harper. She used to work in the financial office at my school.””
My eyebrows tightened.
I had never met her.
Linda looked toward me with sad eyes.
“Mrs. Bennett, I’m sorry you had to find out this way.””
My stomach twisted.
“Find out what?””
Before she answered, Chloe suddenly stood.
“Michael, this is ridiculous.””
Everyone looked at her.
She forced a smile.
“You’re upset because of a misunderstanding. You’re letting emotions control you.””
Michael didn’t respond.
Linda did.
“No, Chloe. He’s finally seeing things clearly.””
The room went silent.
Daniel looked between them.
“Someone explain what’s happening.””
Linda took a deep breath.
“Last year, Michael submitted a scholarship application.””
I nodded slowly.
“Yes. He told me he applied.””
“He did,” Linda said.
“And his application was one of the strongest we received.””
Michael looked down.
“But then something strange happened.””
Linda opened her handbag and removed a folder.
Not a dramatic gesture.
Not something meant to create a scene.
Just a simple action.
But Chloe immediately reacted.
“Put that away.””
Linda looked at her.
“Why?””
Chloe didn’t answer.
Linda continued.
“Two days before the final review, someone contacted our office and claimed Michael’s mother had financial problems and would not be able to support him.””
My face went cold.
“What?””
Michael looked at me.
“I didn’t know.””
Linda nodded.
“The person suggested that Michael was exaggerating his family situation to gain sympathy.””
The audience began whispering.
Daniel stared at Chloe.
“No.””
It came out like he didn’t want to believe it.
Linda looked directly at him.
“Yes.””
Chloe shook her head.
“This is insane.””
Michael finally spoke.
“Then why did the email come from your account?””
The room exploded with whispers.
Daniel turned toward her.
“Your account?””
Chloe’s face changed.
Only for a second.
But everyone saw it.
“I let my account get hacked,” she said quickly.
Michael looked at Linda.
“Tell them what happened next.””
Linda nodded.
“We checked the information. The messages were not from a stranger.””
She paused.
“They were sent from Chloe’s personal email.””
Daniel sat down slowly.
I watched his face.
The confidence he always carried was gone.
“Chloe…”
She looked at him.
“You’re believing this?””
Daniel didn’t answer.
And somehow, that silence hurt her more than anything.
Michael returned to the microphone.
“I found out about this when I was reviewing my old application files.””
He looked at me.
“But I didn’t tell Mom.””
“Why?”” I whispered.
He swallowed.
“Because every time something happened, you protected me from pain.””
His eyes filled slightly.
“I wanted to protect you for once.””
That broke something inside me.
I had spent eighteen years seeing him as my child.
I forgot he had been watching me too.
Watching my struggles.
Watching my sacrifices.
Watching people underestimate me.
Chloe grabbed her purse.
“I’m leaving.””
Michael looked at her.
“Not yet.””
She stopped.
“What?””
He looked toward Linda.
“There’s one more thing.””
Linda’s expression became serious.
“The scholarship committee also discovered another issue.””
The entire room waited.
“What issue?”” Daniel asked.
Linda looked at Chloe.
“The recommendation letter submitted under Michael’s name was altered.””
A wave of shock moved through the auditorium.
I felt my heartbeat in my ears.
Michael looked at Chloe.
“And the person who changed it wrote something that almost destroyed my chances.””
Chloe’s lips parted.
But no sound came out.
Michael reached into his folder.
He pulled out another envelope.
Then he said the words that made Chloe completely freeze.
“The handwriting on that letter wasn’t mine.””
May you like
He turned toward the crowd.
“But it belonged to someone sitting right here.””
