Chapter 10: The Person Behind the First Lie
Daniel stared at the name on the paper.
For several seconds, he didn’t blink.
He didn’t speak.
He just stood there like the world had suddenly become unfamiliar.
“Dad?”” Michael said.
Daniel slowly looked up.
“That’s not possible.””
Rebecca placed the folder on the table.
“I understand why you feel that way. But the evidence points in one direction.””
My eyes moved between them.
“Who is it?””
Daniel swallowed.
Then he said a name.
“Greg.””
The name meant nothing to me.
But the reaction around us told me everything.
Michael frowned.
“Who’s Greg?””
Daniel sat down.
“My best friend.””
The auditorium became quiet again.
The person who had helped break our family apart wasn’t a stranger.
It was someone who had sat at our dinner table.
Someone who had watched Michael grow up.
Someone who had called himself family.
Rebecca nodded.
“Greg Miller had access to information about your marriage because he was close to both of you.””
Daniel covered his face.
“No.””
Michael looked at him.
“You trusted him?””
Daniel nodded slowly.
“I trusted him more than anyone.””
I looked at Daniel.
“Did he know about Chloe?””
Daniel hesitated.
That hesitation was enough.
“Daniel.””
He looked at me.
“Yes.””
The answer landed like a stone.
“How long?””
“I don’t know.””
Rebecca stepped forward.
“We believe Greg’s involvement started before the divorce.””
Michael looked confused.
“Why would he do that?””
Nobody answered immediately.
Then Rebecca said:
“Because some people benefit when relationships collapse.””
Daniel looked down.
“I thought he was helping me.””
I remembered those years.
The arguments Daniel and I had.
The moments he came home distant.
The times he suddenly questioned things he had never questioned before.
“Your mother doesn’t understand you.””
“Maybe you deserve someone who appreciates you.””
“You’ve changed.””
Those words.
I had always thought they came from Daniel.
Now I wondered how many of them had been planted.
Michael looked at me.
“Mom?””
I forced myself to breathe.
“I’m okay.””
But I wasn’t.
Not completely.
Because there was a special kind of pain in realizing you were fighting an invisible enemy.
Someone you never even knew existed.
Rebecca opened another document.
“Greg also contacted Chloe after the divorce.””
Daniel looked up.
“What?””
“Yes.””
Rebecca explained.
“According to the records we found, he encouraged Chloe to maintain the idea that Laura was the reason the family broke apart.””
My hands tightened.
Michael looked furious.
“He used my mom as the villain.””
Rebecca nodded.
“Yes.””
Daniel stood suddenly.
“I need to talk to him.””
Rebecca stopped him.
“Not yet.””
“Why?””
“Because if he knows we discovered this, he may destroy evidence.””
Daniel looked angry.
For once, his anger wasn’t aimed at me.
It was aimed at the person who manipulated him.
Michael looked toward the audience.
“I think everyone has heard enough.””
The principal nodded.
The ceremony was officially paused.
Families slowly began leaving the auditorium.
But nobody left our family.
Not yet.
Everyone wanted to know what happened next.
Chloe remained seated.
Quiet.
Small.
Nothing like the woman who had taken my chair earlier.
As I walked past her, she looked up.
“Laura.””
I stopped.
For a moment, I didn’t know what to say.
“I’m sorry.””
The words surprised me.
Not because I believed she deserved forgiveness.
But because I finally understood something.
Everyone involved had made choices.
Chloe.
Daniel.
Greg.
And I had spent years paying for choices I didn’t make.
I looked at her.
“Sorry doesn’t change what happened.””
She lowered her eyes.
“I know.””
Then she whispered:
“I really did think I was protecting myself.””
I shook my head.
“By hurting my son?””
She had no answer.
Michael came beside me.
“We need to go.””
I nodded.
But before we reached the exit, Rebecca received another call.
She answered.
Then her expression changed.
“What?””
Daniel noticed.
“What happened?””
Rebecca looked toward us.
“There’s been a new development.””
Michael frowned.
“What now?””
Rebecca lowered her voice.
“Greg isn’t the only person connected to this.””
My heart sank.
“Who else?””
She looked at Daniel.
May you like
And said:
“Someone from your past contacted him first.””
