Chapter 13: The Friend Who Knew Everything
I thought I had already experienced the deepest kind of betrayal.
I was wrong.
Because there was one name that hurt differently.
Not Daniel.
Not Chloe.
Not Greg.
Emily.
My best friend.
The woman who sat beside me after my divorce.
The woman who brought me soup when I was sick.
The woman who listened while I cried about feeling like I had failed.
My fingers went cold.
“Emily?””
Rebecca nodded.
“Yes.””
Michael looked at me.
“Mom, do you know her?””
I couldn’t answer immediately.
Because my mind was suddenly filled with memories.
Emily sitting at my kitchen table.
Emily telling me I deserved happiness.
Emily saying she would always support me.
Every conversation.
Every secret.
Every vulnerable moment.
She knew everything.
“She was my closest friend,” I finally whispered.
Daniel looked shocked.
“How?””
Rebecca explained.
“Greg and Emily were connected before your divorce.””
I stared at her.
“No.””
The word came out automatically.
I wanted it to be impossible.
Rebecca continued.
“We found communications showing they discussed information about your marriage.””
Michael looked angry.
“They used Mom’s own friend against her?””
Rebecca nodded.
“That appears to be the case.””
Daniel sat back.
“I can’t believe this.””
I looked at him.
Neither could I.
But for different reasons.
Daniel lost a friend.
I lost someone I trusted with my heart.
Rebecca received another update.
“They’re at the station now.””
“Emily and Greg?””
“Yes.””
Michael stood.
“Can we talk to them?””
Rebecca looked at him.
“You should be prepared.””
“For what?””
She paused.
“For the possibility that the truth is worse than you expect.””
An hour later, we arrived at a private meeting room.
Emily was already there.
The second she saw me, her face changed.
Not surprise.
Guilt.
That was when I knew.
She looked down.
“Laura.””
My heart hurt hearing my name from her.
“How long?””
She didn’t answer.
“How long did you know?””
Emily closed her eyes.
“Almost from the beginning.””
The room became silent.
Michael looked at her.
“You knew what they were doing?””
Emily nodded.
“I knew some of it.””
“Some?””
Her eyes filled.
“I didn’t know how far it would go.””
I stared at her.
“You helped them.””
She whispered:
“Yes.””
That one word broke something inside me.
“Why?””
Emily looked ashamed.
“I was jealous.””
Nobody spoke.
She continued.
“You had something I never had.””
I frowned.
“What?””
“A person who loved you completely.””
I couldn’t believe what I was hearing.
“Emily, I was struggling.””
“I know.””
Her voice cracked.
“I saw it.””
She wiped her tears.
“I saw you working two jobs. I saw you exhausted. I saw you putting Michael first.””
“Then why?””
She looked down.
“Because everyone admired you for surviving.””
Her voice became quieter.
“And I felt invisible.””
Michael shook his head.
“So you tried to make my mom lose everything?””
Emily looked at him.
“No.””
But even she knew the answer wasn’t enough.
Rebecca placed a document on the table.
“You provided Greg with private conversations.””
Emily nodded.
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because he said he could help Daniel understand the truth.””
I almost laughed.
“The truth?””
Emily looked at me.
“I convinced myself you were controlling everything.””
My eyes narrowed.
“And what did I control?””
She didn’t answer.
Because there was nothing.
That was the truth she couldn’t face.
Michael stepped forward.
“You didn’t want my mom to fail.””
Emily looked at him.
“What?””
“You wanted her to stop shining.””
The room went silent.
Emily started crying.
And for a moment, I saw the person I used to know.
Not the person who betrayed me.
The person who made a terrible choice.
But understanding someone’s pain doesn’t erase what they did.
Rebecca gathered the documents.
“Greg and Emily both admitted involvement.””
Daniel looked exhausted.
“What happens now?””
Rebecca answered calmly.
“The legal process will determine the next steps.””
I looked at Emily.
“Why today?””
She looked confused.
“What?””
“Why did everything come out today?””
Emily hesitated.
Then she said:
“Because Greg found out Michael had discovered the truth.””
Michael frowned.
“What does that mean?””
Emily looked at him.
“Your father’s old business records.””
Daniel froze.
“What about them?””
Emily swallowed.
“Greg didn’t just manipulate your divorce.””
She looked at me.
“He hid something much bigger.””
My heart sank.
“What?””
Emily whispered:
“The money Daniel thought he lost…”
May you like
She paused.
“He never lost it.””
