Chapter 5: The Person Who Tried to Erase Me

Nobody looked at me anymore.

Nobody looked at Michael.

Everyone was looking at Chloe.

She remained standing beside the front-row seat she had taken from me.

The same seat she thought proved she belonged.

Now it looked like the seat where everyone realized she didn’t.

Daniel slowly stood.

“Chloe, what is he talking about?””

She shook her head.

“I don’t know.””

Her voice was sharper now.

Defensive.

“You’re all making assumptions.””

Michael calmly opened the envelope.

“I wanted to believe there was another explanation.””

He looked at me.

“Because I didn’t want to hate someone who was part of my life.””

That sentence changed the atmosphere.

Michael wasn’t trying to destroy her.

He was trying to understand why someone would do this.

He looked back at Chloe.

“But I found the answer.””

He handed the envelope to Linda.

She walked toward the microphone.

“During the scholarship review, we noticed inconsistencies in the recommendation letter.””

She held the paper carefully.

“The language style changed halfway through. The signature was also unusual.””

Daniel crossed his arms.

“So?””

Linda looked at him.

“So we contacted the person who supposedly wrote it.””

She paused.

“They confirmed they never wrote the second half.””

The audience gasped.

Daniel looked at Chloe.

“Why would you do that?””

Chloe’s expression hardened.

“Because I was trying to help him.””

Michael almost laughed.

Not because it was funny.

Because he couldn’t believe she said it.

“Help me?””

“Yes.””

She stepped forward.

“I was trying to make sure you got opportunities.””

Michael stared at her.

“By pretending to be someone else?””

Chloe looked around.

“You don’t understand how competitive everything is.””

That was when I finally spoke.

“Then why make it harder for him?””

My voice surprised me.

It was calm.

Stronger than I expected.

Chloe looked at me.

“You.””

The word was filled with resentment.

“This has always been about you.””

I frowned.

“What?””

“Everyone always praised you.””

She laughed quietly.

“You were the hardworking mother. The sacrifice. The hero.””

The auditorium became still.

“I was the one who had to come after.””

Daniel looked uncomfortable.

“Chloe, stop.””

But she kept going.

“You don’t know what it’s like living next to someone everyone admires.””

I stared at her.

And for the first time, I understood something.

Her cruelty was never about me.

It was about the story she told herself.

A story where she was always losing.

Michael shook his head.

“No.””

Everyone looked at him.

“You didn’t come after my mom.””

His voice was quiet.

“You came into a family that welcomed you.””

Chloe froze.

“You had every chance to be someone I respected.””

He pointed toward the seat.

“But instead, you cared more about taking her place than earning your own.””

A few people in the audience lowered their eyes.

Even the principal looked uncomfortable.

Daniel sat silently.

The man who had ignored me earlier was now staring at the floor.

Michael continued.

“I don’t hate you, Chloe.””

She looked almost surprised.

“But I need you to understand something.””

He glanced at me.

“My mom never had to take anyone’s place.””

His voice cracked slightly.

“She built one.””

I couldn’t hold back my tears.

For eighteen years, I had worried my sacrifices went unnoticed.

I was wrong.

Michael had seen everything.

Linda stepped back.

The principal approached the microphone.

“Michael, this is a graduation ceremony.””

Michael nodded.

“I know.””

Then he looked at me.

“And that’s why I wanted to say this today.””

He turned toward the audience.

“Because people celebrate success, but they don’t always see who carried someone there.””

The crowd began applauding.

Slowly at first.

Then louder.

I looked around.

Parents were standing.

Teachers were clapping.

Students were smiling.

And Chloe?

She was sitting down.

Alone.

For the first time, she looked small.

But then her phone rang.

She looked at the screen.

Her face changed instantly.

The anger disappeared.

The confidence disappeared.

She looked terrified.

She stood quickly.

“Excuse me.””

Michael noticed.

“What is it?””

She didn’t answer.

She just stared at the screen.

Then she whispered:

“They found out.””

Daniel heard her.

“Found out about what?””

Chloe slowly looked up.

And the expression on her face told everyone one thing.

May you like

There was another secret.

A bigger one.
