Chapter 14: The Life They Tried to Rewrite
The room went completely silent.
Daniel stared at Emily.
“What did you say?””
Emily looked away.
“I’m sorry.””
“No.””
Daniel stood.
“Say it again.””
She took a breath.
“The money wasn’t lost.””
My head was spinning.
Years of struggle.
Years of believing everything had fallen apart because of one mistake.
And now we were learning that even that had been a lie.
Rebecca opened her folder.
“We suspected this after reviewing the records.””
Daniel looked at her.
“You knew?””
“We needed confirmation.””
She placed several documents on the table.
“Your investment account was transferred before the divorce.””
Daniel stared at the papers.
“Transferred?””
“Yes.””
“To who?””
Rebecca looked at him.
“That’s what we’re still investigating.””
Michael looked between them.
“Dad, how much are we talking about?””
Daniel sat slowly.
“I don’t know.””
“You don’t know?””
“I thought the account was closed.””
Rebecca nodded.
“But it wasn’t.””
I looked at Daniel.
“Why didn’t you check?””
His eyes filled.
“Because I trusted Greg.””
There it was again.
Trust.
The thing that had destroyed everything.
Rebecca continued.
“Greg convinced Daniel the account had collapsed. He also encouraged him to accept blame during the divorce.””
Michael shook his head.
“So Greg created the problem, then acted like he was saving him.””
“Yes.””
I leaned back.
My entire marriage had been surrounded by lies.
Not one.
Not two.
Years of them.
Emily looked at me.
“I’m sorry.””
I looked at her.
“I believe you’re sorry.””
She cried quietly.
“But you still hurt me.””
She nodded.
“I know.””
That was the difference.
For once, nobody was denying the damage.
Nobody was pretending.
Daniel looked at me.
“I spent years thinking I destroyed our family.””
I didn’t answer.
“Maybe I did.””
He looked down.
“But I never stopped loving you.””
The words were painful.
Because they came too late.
I had spent years rebuilding myself.
I had learned how to stand alone.
Michael squeezed my shoulder.
“Mom.””
I looked at him.
“What?””
“Whatever happens next, you’re not going back to being invisible.””
Those words stayed with me.
Because that was what this entire journey had really been about.
Not Chloe.
Not Daniel.
Not Greg.
Me.
Finding the person I had lost while taking care of everyone else.
Rebecca received another call.
She stepped away.
A few moments later, she returned.
“We found the account.””
Daniel stood.
“Where?””
Rebecca looked serious.
“Under a company name connected to Greg.””
Daniel closed his eyes.
“How much?””
She hesitated.
Then answered.
“Enough to change everything.””
Nobody spoke.
Michael looked at me.
But I wasn’t thinking about money.
I was thinking about eighteen years.
Eighteen years of believing I wasn’t enough.
Rebecca continued.
“There is one final piece.””
Daniel looked tired.
“What now?””
“The account was opened using authorization from both Daniel and another person.””
My heart tightened.
“Another person?””
Rebecca nodded.
“Yes.””
“Who?””
She looked down at the file.
Then back at me.
“The authorization was signed the week before your divorce.””
Daniel looked confused.
“That’s impossible.””
Rebecca shook her head.
“No.””
She turned the paper around.
“The signature is real.””
Daniel looked at it.
Then his face changed.
Because he recognized the name.
Michael saw his reaction.
“Dad?””
Daniel whispered:
“That signature…”
May you like
He looked at me.
“Was yours.””
