Chapter 9: The Sister Who Was Stolen
The woman stood in the hallway like she had been waiting years for this exact moment.
Her name was Margaret.
She was probably in her sixties.
Gray hair.
Tired eyes.
A face that looked more sad than dangerous.
But I couldn’t forget what she had just said.
*I’m the woman who raised your sister.*
My grip tightened around the photograph.
“You know where my sister is?””
Margaret nodded.
“Yes.””
“Where?””
She looked at me.
“You already know her.””
My blood ran cold.
“No.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“Who is she?””
Margaret looked at him.
Then back at me.
“She’s been close to you for years.””
My mind raced through every person I knew.
Then one name appeared.
A name that made no sense.
“Vanessa.””
Margaret didn’t answer.
She didn’t need to.
The silence was enough.
I stepped back.
“No.””
Margaret’s eyes filled with tears.
“I didn’t want this.””
“You raised Vanessa?””
“Yes.””
“She’s my sister?””
“Yes.””
The room spun.
I grabbed the table.
Daniel caught my arm.
“Claire.””
I shook my head.
“This is impossible.””
Margaret slowly walked closer.
“When the hospital mistake happened, Vanessa’s mother died.””
I looked at her.
“Linda said the baby was gone.””
“Linda was told that.””
“And you?””
Margaret looked down.
“I knew the truth.””
“Why?””
Her face broke.
“Because I was there.””
The room went silent.
Margaret explained that she had been a hospital employee at the time.
Not a nurse.
Not a doctor.
Someone who handled records.
Someone who saw the confusion happen.
“I knew the babies had been mixed.””
“Then why didn’t you fix it?””
Her eyes filled with shame.
“Because I was afraid.””
“Afraid of what?””
She looked at the photograph.
“Your father.””
I frowned.
“My father?””
“He discovered what happened.””
“And?””
“He wanted both children protected.””
“Protected from who?””
Margaret hesitated.
Then whispered:
“From your mother.””
My body went cold.
“My mother?””
“No.””
She shook her head.
“Not the woman you knew.””
I stared.
“What does that mean?””
Margaret sat down.
“Your mother wasn’t the one who hid the truth.””
“Then who?””
She looked at the doorway.
“Your father’s first wife.””
I froze.
“What?””
Daniel looked confused.
“Claire’s father was married before?””
Margaret nodded.
“She never accepted that he left her.””
I felt sick.
“Why are you telling me this now?””
“Because Vanessa found out.””
“What did she find out?””
Margaret looked at me.
“That she wasn’t just searching for her identity.””
A pause.
“She was searching for revenge.””
My heart sank.
“Against me?””
Margaret shook her head.
“Against everyone who knew.””
Daniel looked toward the photograph.
“Then why did she warn me?””
Margaret’s expression changed.
“Because she doesn’t know who the real enemy is.””
I thought about the airport.
The fear on Vanessa’s face.
The way she said she didn’t know Daniel was married.
Maybe she wasn’t the villain.
Maybe she was another person trapped in someone else’s lie.
Then my phone buzzed.
A message.
From Vanessa.
I opened it.
The words made my hands shake.
*I know you met Margaret.*
Another message appeared.
*She will tell you I’m your sister.*
I stared.
Then the final message arrived.
*But she won’t tell you why she really took me.*
I looked at Margaret.
She was crying.
“Claire…”
My voice was barely a whisper.
“What did you do?””
Margaret closed her eyes.
And after eight years of secrets, she finally said the words that changed everything.
“I didn’t raise Vanessa because she was your sister.””
May you like
She opened her eyes.
“I raised her because I was the one who took her.””
