Chapter 5: The Woman Who Knew Too Much
We met Vanessa’s mother at a small coffee shop two miles from the hospital.
Her name was Linda.
And the second she saw Daniel and me walk in, I knew she had been expecting us.
She didn’t look surprised.
She looked tired.
Like someone who had been carrying a secret for too long.
Daniel sat across from her.
“I have questions.””
Linda looked at him.
“I know.””
I hated that answer.
Because it meant she had known this moment was coming.
“You know why we’re here?”” I asked.
She looked at me.
“Yes.””
“Then explain.””
Linda wrapped both hands around her coffee cup.
“I was hoping you’d never find out.””
Daniel leaned forward.
“You were the nurse who handled my daughter’s birth.””
Linda nodded.
“Yes.””
“And you knew about the records issue.””
“Yes.””
“Then why didn’t you tell us?””
Her eyes moved toward me.
“I tried.””
I felt my stomach tighten.
“No, you didn’t.””
Linda looked down.
“You don’t remember.””
“Remember what?””
“The night Emily was born.””
A cold feeling moved through me.
“I remember everything.””
“No.””
Linda shook her head.
“You remember the version your mind allowed you to keep.””
Daniel looked confused.
“What does that mean?””
Linda took a breath.
“After the delivery, Claire wasn’t just exhausted.””
I looked at her.
“Stop.””
“You were given medication.””
“I know.””
“No. You don’t.””
Her voice softened.
“You had a reaction.””
Daniel turned toward me.
“What reaction?””
I felt suddenly trapped.
“Linda.””
But she continued.
“You became confused. You kept asking where your baby was.””
My hands tightened.
“I was in pain.””
“You were terrified.””
Linda looked at Daniel.
“And while Claire was recovering, there was a problem with another infant.””
Daniel frowned.
“Another infant?””
Linda nodded.
“A baby girl.””
The room became silent.
“What problem?”” I asked.
Linda hesitated.
“The baby had no confirmed family contact for several hours.””
My heart started pounding.
“What does that mean?””
“It means the paperwork was incomplete.””
Daniel’s face changed.
“And you’re saying Emily’s records got mixed with hers?””
Linda looked away.
“For a short time.””
Daniel stood slightly.
“Short time?””
Linda’s eyes filled with guilt.
“I made a mistake.””
I felt sick.
“What mistake?””
She whispered:
“I switched the tags.””
The words hit the table like glass breaking.
Daniel stared.
“You switched the hospital tags?””
“Only for a few minutes.””
“A few minutes can change someone’s entire life.””
“I know.””
“No, you don’t.””
Daniel’s voice shook.
“My daughter spent eight years living with questions because of you.””
Linda closed her eyes.
“I know.””
I looked at her.
“Why?””
She opened her eyes.
And the answer destroyed the room.
“Because the other baby was mine.””
Nobody spoke.
I couldn’t process it.
Daniel looked confused.
“Your baby?””
Linda nodded.
“My granddaughter.””
The pieces started moving.
Slowly.
Painfully.
Vanessa.
The warning.
The DNA report.
The message.
I whispered:
“Vanessa.””
Linda looked at me.
“Yes.””
Daniel stepped back.
“Vanessa is your granddaughter?””
Linda nodded.
“She was the baby’s mother.””
I stared at her.
“But Vanessa is around our age.””
“Yes.””
My mind raced.
“What are you saying?””
Linda looked directly at me.
“The baby I accidentally switched records with was not Emily.””
My heart stopped.
“Then who was it?””
Linda’s face filled with regret.
“She was Vanessa’s daughter.””
I stood up.
“No.””
Daniel looked at me.
“Claire?””
I shook my head.
“No. That’s impossible.””
Linda whispered:
“The baby died.””
Silence.
I felt the world disappear beneath my feet.
“What?””
“She was born with a condition. She didn’t survive.””
Daniel sat back down slowly.
“Then why would Vanessa care about Emily?””
Linda looked at him.
“Because Vanessa believes someone stole her daughter’s identity.””
I stared.
“But Emily is my daughter.””
“Yes.””
Linda’s voice softened.
“She is.””
“Then why?””
Linda reached into her bag.
She pulled out an old photograph.
A hospital photo.
A baby wrapped in a white blanket.
She placed it on the table.
“I think Vanessa has been searching for answers.””
Daniel looked at the picture.
Then at Linda.
“What does this have to do with the DNA test?””
Linda didn’t answer.
Instead, she looked at me.
“Claire…”
Her voice became almost a whisper.
“There’s something I never told you about that night.””
I felt my chest tighten.
“What?””
Linda pushed the photograph closer.
“Emily wasn’t the only baby involved.””
I looked down.
And saw something written on the back of the picture.
A name.
A name I had never seen before.
*Baby Girl Carter.*
My blood ran cold.
May you like
Because Carter wasn’t Vanessa’s last name.
It was mine.
