Chapter 7: The Daughter I Never Knew About
I read the sentence over and over until the words stopped looking real.
*The baby born before Emily was not lost. She was hidden.*
My fingers went numb.
For years, I had believed my life was simple.
I was Claire Carter.
I grew up in a small house with parents who loved me.
I married Daniel.
We had Emily.
A normal life.
A happy life.
Except now, I was holding proof that my entire beginning had been rewritten.
Daniel found me sitting on the attic floor.
He didn’t say anything at first.
He just looked at the papers scattered around me.
Then he saw my face.
“Claire.””
I couldn’t answer.
He stepped closer.
“What did you find?””
I handed him the letter.
He read it silently.
Then his expression changed.
“This is from Linda.””
I nodded.
“Why would she write this?””
Daniel looked at the letter again.
“Because she knows something.””
I laughed quietly.
A broken sound.
“Everyone knows something.””
He sat beside me.
“Except you.””
That hurt because it was true.
I looked at the old photographs around me.
Pictures of a childhood I thought belonged to me.
“Do you ever feel like your entire life can disappear in one moment?””
Daniel looked at me.
“I do now.””
For a second, neither of us spoke.
The strange thing was, even after everything, Daniel was the only person who understood what this felt like.
Both of us had discovered that the truth we trusted wasn’t the truth at all.
“I need to call Linda,” I said.
Daniel nodded.
“We need answers.””
“No.””
I looked at him.
“I need answers.””
He understood.
This wasn’t about him anymore.
This was about me.
Linda agreed to meet us that evening.
She chose a quiet park away from the city.
When she arrived, she looked older than she had the day before.
Like carrying the secret out loud had aged her.
She sat across from me.
“I knew this day would come.””
I stared at her.
“Then why did you wait?””
She looked down.
“Because your mother asked me to.””
My chest tightened.
“My mother?””
Linda nodded.
“Evelyn Carter.””
Hearing my mother’s name made everything feel even more impossible.
“My mother knew?””
“Yes.””
I stood up.
“No.””
People walking nearby looked over.
I didn’t care.
“No. My mother would never hide something like this from me.””
Linda’s eyes filled with sadness.
“Claire, your mother spent her whole life trying to protect you.””
“Protect me from what?””
Linda hesitated.
“The truth.””
I felt anger rising.
“The truth is not something you protect someone from.””
“Sometimes it is.””
“No.””
My voice shook.
“Sometimes it’s just something people hide because they’re afraid of what happens when they’re exposed.””
Linda accepted that.
She didn’t argue.
And somehow, that made it worse.
“Tell me everything.””
Linda took a deep breath.
“When you were born, there was another baby.””
I already knew that part.
“Keep going.””
“The hospital records were mixed because of my mistake.””
“Your mistake.””
“Yes.””
“And then?””
Linda looked at the ground.
“The other baby survived.””
My entire body went still.
“What?””
Daniel looked at her sharply.
“You said the baby died.””
Linda closed her eyes.
“That’s what I was told.””
My heart started racing.
“You don’t know?””
“No.””
The park suddenly felt too quiet.
Linda continued.
“After the paperwork was corrected, your mother took you home.””
“My mother took me home.””
“Yes.””
“Then where was the other baby?””
Linda looked at me.
“That’s what I’ve been trying to find out.””
I stared.
“You mean nobody knows?””
“Someone knows.””
“Who?””
Linda’s face changed.
Fear.
Real fear.
“Your father.””
I froze.
“My father died twelve years ago.””
“I know.””
“Then how?””
Linda reached into her bag.
She pulled out another envelope.
“He left this.””
Daniel looked at it.
“Why didn’t you give it to Claire before?””
“Because I didn’t know if she could handle it.””
I almost laughed.
“Everyone keeps saying that.””
Linda looked at me.
“Because we all know what this truth can do.””
I grabbed the envelope.
“My entire life has been built on lies. I can handle the truth.””
My hands shook as I opened it.
Inside was a letter.
My father’s handwriting.
The first line made my heart stop.
*Claire, if you are reading this, then someone finally told you about your sister.*
My breath caught.
My sister.
The word felt impossible.
I continued reading.
*I need you to know something. The baby who disappeared was not taken from the hospital. She was taken from us.*
I looked at Daniel.
He was reading over my shoulder.
The next sentence was underlined.
*And the person who took her was someone you trust.*
I looked back at Linda.
She looked terrified.
“Who?””
Nobody answered.
Then my phone rang.
The screen showed a name.
A name I hadn’t seen in years.
May you like
A name that shouldn’t have been calling me.
*Dad.*
