Chapter 6: The Baby Who Was Never Supposed to Exist
I didn’t speak the entire drive home.
Neither did Daniel.
The photograph sat between us on the passenger seat.
A tiny piece of paper.
A baby’s picture.
A name that should not have existed.
*Baby Girl Carter.*
My maiden name.
My family name.
A name that belonged to me before I became Claire Williams.
When we arrived home, Emily was sitting at the kitchen table drawing.
She looked up.
“Are you mad at me?””
The question broke something inside me.
I immediately walked over.
“No.””
She looked down.
“You always whisper when adults are hiding something.””
I sat beside her.
“You’re right.””
She looked surprised.
“I am?””
“Yes.””
I took her hand.
“And I’m sorry.””
“For what?””
“For making you feel like you had to figure things out alone.””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“Is Dad leaving?””
I looked toward the doorway.
Daniel was standing there.
He heard the question.
And this time, he answered.
“No.””
Emily looked at him.
“Even if I’m not your real daughter?””
Daniel walked over and knelt beside her.
“You are my daughter.””
“But what if—”
“No.””
His voice was firm.
“I don’t care what any paper says.””
Emily stared at him.
“You mean it?””
Daniel nodded.
“I chose you every day since the moment I held you.””
That made her cry.
And so did he.
For the first time since the airport, I saw the father Emily knew.
Not the husband who lied.
Not the man who betrayed me.
Just her dad.
But the moment was interrupted by Daniel’s phone.
He looked at the screen.
His expression changed.
“What?””
I immediately knew.
Another secret.
Another person.
Another piece of our lives we didn’t understand.
“Who is it?”” I asked.
He didn’t answer.
“Daniel.””
He turned the phone around.
It was a message from Vanessa.
*I know you found my grandmother.*
A second message appeared.
*Now you need to know what Claire did.*
I felt cold.
“What does that mean?””
Daniel looked at me.
“I don’t know.””
A third message came.
*Ask her why she changed her name after Emily was born.*
I stopped breathing.
Because that wasn’t true.
Was it?
I had never changed my name.
I had always been Claire Carter before I married Daniel.
But then I remembered something.
Something I hadn’t thought about in years.
The old documents.
The missing birth records.
The hospital forms.
My mother’s reaction whenever I asked about the weeks after I was born.
Daniel watched my face.
“You know something.””
I hated those words.
Because they sounded exactly like what I had said to him.
“I don’t know.””
But even I heard the uncertainty.
Daniel stepped closer.
“Claire.””
I looked away.
“There’s something my mother told me.””
“What?””
“When I was young, she said my birth records were corrected.””
Daniel stared.
“Corrected?””
“Yes.””
“When?””
I swallowed.
“When I was a baby.””
The room became silent.
Emily looked between us.
“What’s happening?””
I forced a smile.
“Nothing, sweetheart.””
But everything was happening.
Because suddenly, the story wasn’t about Daniel cheating.
It wasn’t even about whether he was Emily’s father.
It was about me.
My past.
My birth.
The secrets my family buried.
That night, after Emily went to sleep, I searched through old boxes in the attic.
I found my baby photos.
My childhood records.
My mother’s old documents.
And then I found something hidden beneath a stack of letters.
An envelope.
Yellowed with age.
My name was written across the front.
But it wasn’t my mother’s handwriting.
It was Linda’s.
I opened it with shaking hands.
Inside was one sentence.
One sentence that made my entire life feel like a lie.
*Claire Carter was not the name you were born with.*
I dropped the paper.
Because underneath that sentence was another line.
May you like
A line that explained why Vanessa had been searching for us.
*The baby born before Emily was not lost. She was hidden.*
