Chapter 8: The Voice From the Grave

I couldn’t move.

The phone kept ringing.

Daniel looked at the screen.

“Claire…”

“I know.””

“That’s your father.””

I nodded.

“But he’s dead.””

The call ended.

Three seconds later, another call came.

Same name.

Same number.

My hands went cold.

Slowly, I answered.

“Hello?””

At first, there was only silence.

Then breathing.

A man’s voice spoke.

“Claire?””

My knees almost gave out.

Because I knew that voice.

I had heard it in old home videos.

I had heard it in my memories.

“Dad?””

Daniel stood immediately.

The voice on the phone became shaky.

“You found the letter.””

I couldn’t speak.

“How are you calling me?””

Silence.

Then:

“I knew this day would come.””

My anger exploded.

“No. You don’t get to say that.””

The voice went quiet.

“You lied to me.””

“I tried to protect you.””

“Everyone says that.””

I was crying now.

“Everyone says they protected me while they destroyed my life.””

Daniel gently touched my shoulder.

The voice on the phone softened.

“Claire, listen carefully.””

“No.””

“You need to hear this.””

“Where are you?””

A pause.

“I can’t tell you.””

I laughed bitterly.

“Of course you can’t.””

“Because if you know where I am, they will know too.””

My anger faded slightly.

“Who?””

The line went silent.

Then my father said:

“Vanessa.””

My heart stopped.

Daniel looked at me.

“What did he say?””

I put the phone on speaker.

My father continued.

“Vanessa doesn’t know the whole story.””

“Then tell us.””

“I can’t explain everything over the phone.””

“Why?””

“Because someone has been watching for years.””

I looked around the park.

A ridiculous thought crossed my mind.

Someone watching.

Someone waiting.

Someone knowing.

“Dad, where are you?””

Another pause.

Then:

“Meet me at the old house.””

I froze.

The old house.

The house where I grew up.

The house my mother sold after he died.

“That house is empty.””

“No.””

His voice cracked.

“It isn’t.””

A chill moved through me.

“What do you mean?””

Before he answered, another sound came through the phone.

A door opening.

My father whispered:

“They found me.””

Then the call ended.

We drove to the old house that night.

Daniel insisted on coming.

I didn’t argue.

Neither of us trusted what was happening anymore.

The house looked exactly the same.

The white paint.

The broken fence.

The tree where I used to hang a swing.

But something felt wrong.

The front door was unlocked.

Daniel stopped.

“Did your father leave it open?””

“I don’t know.””

He looked at me.

“Stay behind me.””

I almost smiled.

“Since when are you the protective one?””

“Since I almost lost my family.””

The answer hurt.

Because I knew he meant it.

We stepped inside.

The house smelled old.

Like dust and memories.

“Dad?””

No answer.

We searched the living room.

The kitchen.

The hallway.

Then I saw it.

A photograph on the table.

A photograph that made me stop breathing.

It showed my mother.

My father.

And two babies.

Two newborn girls.

My hands trembled as I picked it up.

On the back was a date.

The day I was born.

And underneath it, my father had written:

*One daughter came home. One daughter was taken.*

Daniel looked at me.

“Claire.””

I couldn’t answer.

Because there was another sound.

A slow clap.

From the hallway.

We turned.

A woman stepped out of the shadows.

Not Vanessa.

Not Linda.

Someone older.

Someone I had never seen before.

She looked directly at me.

Then she said:

“You finally found out.””

My heart raced.

“Who are you?””

May you like

She smiled sadly.

“I’m the woman who raised your sister.””
