Chapter 12: The Man Behind the Lies

I ended the call.

Slowly.

Carefully.

Like if I moved too fast, my entire world would collapse.

Daniel watched me.

“What did she say?””

I couldn’t answer.

“Claire.””

I looked at him.

“She thinks you’re involved.””

His face changed.

“What?””

“She thinks you know more than you’re telling me.””

Daniel immediately shook his head.

“No.””

The speed of his answer bothered me.

Not because it proved guilt.

Because it sounded rehearsed.

“How much do you know, Daniel?””

“About what?””

“About Vanessa.””

“I already told you.””

“No.””

I stepped closer.

“You told me about the DNA test. You told me about the message. You told me you were scared.””

My voice lowered.

“But you never told me why Vanessa was watching you.””

Daniel looked away.

That was the answer.

“You knew something.””

He rubbed his forehead.

“Claire.””

“Tell me.””

“I was trying to protect you.””

I almost laughed.

Again.

That same sentence.

“Everyone says that.””

Daniel’s eyes filled.

“I didn’t know how to explain it.””

“Try.””

He sat down.

And for the first time, he looked truly afraid.

“When I was overseas, I found old company records.””

“What records?””

“My father’s business files.””

I frowned.

“What does your father have to do with this?””

Daniel looked at me.

“Everything.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“My father wasn’t just my employer’s partner.””

“What was he?””

“He invested in the hospital where you were born.””

The room went silent.

I stared.

“What?””

Daniel nodded.

“He was one of the people who funded the maternity wing.””

My heart sank.

“You knew?””

“I found out after I left.””

“And you didn’t tell me?””

“I was trying to confirm it.””

“Confirm what?””

“That my family was connected to what happened.””

I felt dizzy.

“Your family?””

Daniel nodded.

“My father’s company paid for the private transfers.””

The words barely made sense.

“Are you saying your family helped hide Vanessa?””

“No.””

He stood quickly.

“No. I’m saying I was afraid they did.””

I studied his face.

The panic.

The guilt.

The fear.

And I realized something.

Daniel had been carrying his own secret.

But maybe not the one I thought.

“Why did Vanessa accuse you?””

Daniel looked at his phone.

“She found a file.””

“What file?””

He hesitated.

“A file with my father’s name on it.””

My stomach tightened.

“What was inside?””

Daniel swallowed.

“A payment record.””

“To who?””

He looked at me.

“Your mother.””

I stepped back.

“No.””

“I know how it looks.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“My mother would never.””

Daniel’s expression softened.

“Claire.””

I didn’t want to hear it.

I didn’t want another person I loved to become a stranger.

Then Daniel’s phone buzzed.

A message.

He opened it.

His face changed.

“What?””

He handed it to me.

It was from Vanessa.

Attached was a photograph.

An old photograph.

Three people standing outside the hospital.

My mother.

Daniel’s father.

And Linda.

Below it was one sentence:

*They didn’t just hide Vanessa. They chose which daughter would go home.*

I looked at the picture.

Then at Daniel.

Because behind them, standing near the hospital entrance…

was a little girl.

Not a baby.

A child.

A child who looked exactly like me.

And written on the back of the photograph was a date.

Eight years after my birth.

The day my mother supposedly died.

But she wasn’t dead.

May you like

She was alive.

And she had been watching us.
