Chapter 2: The Secret Inside His Suitcase

Daniel didn’t come home with us.

That was the first thing he did that told me everything.

A man who had just been caught cheating should have followed us.

He should have begged.

He should have apologized.

Instead, he stood frozen in the airport while another woman stared at him like she was seeing a stranger.

That night, Emily slept in my bed.

She was eight years old, but she curled against me like she was five.

“Mom?””

“Yeah, sweetheart?””

“Are you and Dad getting divorced?””

The question almost broke me.

I stared at the ceiling, trying to find the right answer.

“I don’t know.””

She was quiet for a long time.

Then she whispered, “Did I do something wrong?””

I turned toward her immediately.

“No.””

“But he looked scared when he saw us.””

I brushed her hair away from her face.

“Adults make mistakes. But none of those mistakes are because of you.””

She nodded, but I knew she didn’t fully believe me.

The next morning, Daniel came to the house.

I almost didn’t open the door.

But Emily was in the living room, watching cartoons, and I didn’t want her to hear us shouting through a closed door.

When I opened it, Daniel looked exhausted.

He had barely slept.

Good.

For the first time in months, I wanted him to feel uncomfortable.

“Claire.””

“Don’t say my name like you’re happy to see me.””

His jaw tightened.

“I know you’re angry.””

“Angry?””

I stepped aside.

“You think I’m angry?””

He walked inside slowly.

“I know how this looks.””

“No. You don’t.””

I pointed toward the hallway.

“You know what it looks like to you? A mistake you got caught making.””

Daniel looked away.

“Her name is Vanessa.””

“I didn’t ask.””

“She works at the company I partnered with overseas.””

“And?””

He rubbed his face.

“And I should have told you.””

I stared at him.

“That’s your explanation?””

“No.””

“Then give me the real one.””

Silence.

The silence was worse than anything he could have said.

Finally, he sat down.

“Things between us weren’t good.””

I laughed once.

A cold, empty sound.

“Things between us weren’t good because you were gone.””

“I was trying to provide.””

“You were disappearing.””

He looked hurt.

But I wasn’t done.

“Emily waited by the phone every night. She made countdown calendars. She told her teacher her dad was coming home to take her fishing.””

Daniel lowered his eyes.

“I know.””

“No, you don’t.””

His face tightened.

“I know because I saw her.””

That stopped me.

“What?””

He looked toward Emily’s room.

“When I came back from the airport yesterday, I went to the hotel. I couldn’t come here.””

“Why?””

His hesitation made my stomach twist.

“Because I needed to figure out what to do.””

“With your girlfriend?””

His eyes flashed.

“She’s not the reason I’m scared.””

I remembered the airport.

The panic.

The way Vanessa had said, “You told me you were separated.””

“What are you scared of, Daniel?””

He didn’t answer.

I walked toward the door.

“Then we’re done talking.””

“Claire, wait.””

I turned.

His expression was different now.

Not defensive.

Not guilty.

Afraid.

“There’s something you need to know.””

“What?””

He reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a small envelope.

My heart started beating faster.

“What is that?””

He looked at it for several seconds before handing it to me.

“It’s been in my suitcase for months.””

I didn’t take it.

“Why?””

“Because I didn’t know how to tell you.””

“Tell me what?””

Daniel looked toward Emily’s bedroom.

Then back at me.

And his next words changed everything.

“Because before I left for that trip… I found out Emily might not be my daughter.””

The room went silent.

I couldn’t move.

I couldn’t breathe.

“What did you say?””

Daniel’s face was full of regret.

“I got a DNA test.””

The world seemed to tilt.

“You did what?””

“I didn’t know how to talk to you about it.””

My hands started shaking.

“Daniel, what are you saying?””

He pushed the envelope toward me.

“I never told anyone.””

I stared at the paper.

At the sealed edge.

At the secret that had been sitting inside his suitcase while I waited for him to come home.

Then I heard a small voice behind me.

“Mom?””

We both turned.

Emily stood in the hallway.

She had heard enough.

Her face was pale.

“Am I not Dad’s daughter?””

Daniel immediately stood.

“Emily, no—”

But she stepped back.

And before either of us could reach her, she ran upstairs.

I looked at Daniel.

“You just destroyed her.””

His eyes filled with tears.

“No.””

He shook his head.

“That’s not the worst part.””

I froze.

“What could possibly be worse than this?””

Daniel looked at the envelope.

Then he whispered:

“Because the test results don’t say I’m not her father.””

I stared at him.

“Then what do they say?””

He looked toward the stairs.

May you like

And his voice dropped.

“They say someone changed the results before I ever saw them.””
