Chapter 8: The Recording Sarah Left Behind

I didn't confront Vanessa again that night.

I wanted answers, but I wanted evidence more.

There was a difference.

I copied every recording onto an encrypted drive, emailed the files to Karen, and asked her to preserve them for the investigation.

Then I made two calls.

The first was to the bank.

The second was to the company holding Sarah's life insurance policy.

Both confirmed that restrictions had been placed on the disputed transactions and requested documents.

By midnight, Vanessa had moved into Brianna's old bedroom.

She claimed she needed space.

I didn't argue.

The following morning, Karen listened to the recordings with me in her office.

She had brought in a forensic specialist named Daniel Reed, who examined the files and confirmed that the original recordings appeared to contain consistent metadata. He warned us that authenticity would need further examination before they could be relied upon formally.

I didn't care about technical details.

I wanted to hear Sarah's voice again.

Daniel played the November 21 recording.

Sarah sounded tired.

But she was clear.

"Vanessa, I know about the agreement.""

Vanessa answered, "Sarah, you're confused.""

"Don't lie to me. I saw Derek's name. I saw the payment schedule.""

Derek interrupted.

"You don't understand the arrangement.""

"I understand enough. You're both trying to take control of Emily's money.""

Vanessa's voice sharpened.

"You need to stop interfering.""

"She's my daughter.""

"She's Michael's daughter, too.""

Sarah gave a bitter laugh.

"And you think that makes you her mother?""

There was a long pause.

Then Derek spoke.

"Look, Sarah. You need to be practical. Vanessa is going to marry Michael.

They're going to be one family. Your little account isn't going to matter.""

Sarah answered immediately.

"That's precisely why I created it. So Emily would always have something that belonged to her.""

Daniel paused the recording.

"There's a second voice in the background.""

Karen leaned closer.

"Can you isolate it?""

Daniel adjusted the audio.

A faint voice emerged.

It was Vanessa.

"Just get her to sign the papers.""

Then Derek.

"She won't.""

"Then use the other documents.""

I felt my stomach tighten.

"What other documents?""

Daniel continued playing.

Sarah's voice became louder.

"Michael never agreed to this.""

Derek answered, "Michael doesn't need to know.""

The recording ended.

Karen removed her glasses.

"Michael, we need to consider whether someone attempted to obtain financial authority over you through forged documents.""

"I know they did. I saw the home-equity agreement.""

"There's more. I've reviewed the policy paperwork. Sarah also documented a concern about a proposed change to Emily's guardianship arrangements.""

I looked up.

"Guardianship?""

"After Sarah died, you became Emily's surviving parent. But Sarah had prepared documents naming an independent person to oversee certain inherited assets. Someone submitted paperwork attempting to replace that arrangement.""

"With Vanessa?""

Karen nodded.

"That request was rejected.""

I leaned back.

"How much control were they trying to get?""

"Enough to manage the money and potentially direct how it was distributed. We need to establish exactly which documents were accepted and which were rejected.""

I rubbed my face.

Then Daniel spoke.

"There's something interesting about the recordings.""

"What?""

"The files weren't created on the laptop.""

He turned his screen toward me.

"They appear to have been transferred from a portable recording device.""

I thought about the USB drive Karen had given me.

"Could Sarah have made these herself?""

"Possibly.""

Karen nodded.

"Sarah told me she had begun documenting conversations because she feared the paperwork would disappear.""

I stared at the laptop.

"Then why didn't she give me everything?""

Karen looked at me.

"I believe she wanted to. But she may have been afraid of what would happen if Vanessa knew you had the evidence.""

My phone vibrated.

A message from Vanessa.

*We need to talk. Alone. Please don't involve Karen.*

I showed it to Karen.

She shook her head.

"Don't agree to anything without keeping a record of the conversation.""

I typed back.

*You can come to my lawyer's office.*

Her response came almost immediately.

*No. I want to tell you something about Sarah. Something I have never told anyone.*

I stared at the screen.

Karen noticed my expression.

"What is it?""

I showed her the message.

She considered it.

"Don't meet her alone. But if she's willing to provide information, we can arrange a properly documented meeting.""

An hour later, Vanessa arrived.

She wore no makeup. Her hair was tied back, and she looked exhausted.

She sat across from us.

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Then she looked at me.

"Sarah knew about Derek and me.""

I folded my arms.

"Obviously.""

"Not everything.""

"Then tell us everything.""

Vanessa looked at Karen.

"I want to explain what happened at the hospital.""

Karen placed a recorder on the table.

"Everything you say is being documented.""

Vanessa nodded.

"Fine.""

She took a breath.

"Seven years ago, Derek and I were still communicating. He had been helping me organize my finances. When I met Michael, I thought I had finally found a way out of the life I'd been living.""

"By marrying me?""

"At first, yes.""

The honesty was almost worse than another lie.

"But I fell in love with him," she continued.

"I really did.""

I looked at her.

"Did you love me before or after you discovered what my house was worth?""

She lowered her eyes.

"I don't know anymore.""

Karen interrupted.

"What happened with Sarah?""

Vanessa's hands began trembling.

"Sarah confronted me in the hospital. She had copies of the agreement. She told me she was going to show Michael.""

"What did you do?"" I asked.

"I asked her to wait.""

"Why?""

"Because I was afraid.""

"Afraid of what?""

Vanessa began crying.

"She told me she was going to make sure Emily never had anything to do with me.""

I stared at her.

"So you retaliated?""

"No! I didn't hurt her.""

Nobody had accused her of that.

She covered her face.

"Sarah was angry. She said if I married you, she'd tell you about Derek, the documents, everything.""

"And then?""

Vanessa looked directly at me.

"Then someone came into her room claiming to be you.""

My entire body went cold.

"Who?""

"I don't know.""

"You don't know?""

"I was outside when it happened. Derek told me he had arranged for someone to speak with her.""

"Who arranged it?""

Vanessa hesitated.

Then she whispered, "Derek.""

I stood.

"Why?""

"To convince Sarah to stay quiet.""

"What did this person tell her?""

Vanessa wiped her face.

"I don't know. When I came back, Sarah was crying. She asked me whether Michael was still planning to marry me.""

I felt physically sick.

"And what did you tell her?""

"I said yes.""

Karen leaned forward.

"Did Sarah say anything else?""

Vanessa nodded.

"She told me that she had left something with someone she trusted. She said that even if she couldn't stop the marriage, she would make sure Emily was protected.""

I stared at my wife.

"Did you ever find it?""

"No.""

"Did Derek?""

Vanessa shook her head.

Then she reached into her purse and placed a folded sheet of paper on the desk.

"There's something else. Derek sent this to me last week.""

Karen unfolded it.

It was a bank transfer confirmation.

The recipient wasn't Derek.

It was an account belonging to a company registered in another state.

The amount was $150,000.

And the transaction date was seven years earlier.

I looked at Vanessa.

"You paid Derek before we even got married?""

She nodded.

"But not from my money.""

I frowned.

"What does that mean?""

Her voice became barely audible.

"Derek told me someone had already paid him to arrange the entire thing.""

"Who?""

Vanessa stared at the paper.

"I never knew the person's real name.""

Karen turned the document over.

There was a reference number handwritten on the back.

She examined it for a moment, then slowly looked up.

"Michael, this isn't a payment to Derek.""

"Then who received it?""

Karen pointed to the company name.

It was a business registered to someone who had once worked closely with Sarah.

And when she read the director's name aloud, I felt the room tilt.

"*Thomas Reed.*"

Sarah's brother.

May you like

My daughter's uncle.

The man who had stood beside me at her funeral.
