Chapter 13: The Guardian Sarah Chose
The following morning, someone knocked on the front door at exactly 8:15.
I was in the kitchen with Emily, Brianna, and Karen when the doorbell rang.
Karen looked at the photograph again.
"Michael, before you open that door, I want you to understand something. Sarah's choice of guardian doesn't mean she didn't trust you. These documents usually identify someone who would care for a child if the surviving parent became unable to do so.""
I nodded.
But I couldn't stop thinking about the signature.
I walked to the door and opened it.
A woman stood on the porch holding a small leather handbag.
Her name was Laura Bennett.
She had been Sarah's closest friend since college. She'd attended our wedding, been Emily's godmother, and spent countless weekends at our house when Emily was little.
After Sarah died, Laura had remained close to Emily for a while. Then she accepted a nursing position in North Carolina and gradually became less involved in our daily lives.
I hadn't seen her in almost two years.
"Laura?""
She nodded.
"Hello, Michael.""
Her eyes immediately filled with tears.
"Can I come in?""
I stepped aside.
She walked into the living room and froze when she saw Vanessa.
For several seconds, neither woman spoke.
Then Laura placed her handbag on the table.
"She's here?""
I looked at her.
"Who?""
Laura pointed toward Vanessa.
"The woman Sarah spent her final weeks trying to protect Emily from.""
Vanessa stood abruptly.
"How dare you?""
Laura didn't blink.
"Sarah trusted you. She gave you a chance to become part of her daughter's life. And you repaid her by stealing from that child.""
Vanessa looked at me.
"You're allowing strangers to come into our home and insult me?""
I shook my head.
"Laura isn't a stranger.""
Laura opened her handbag.
"Actually, I think it's time Michael knew why Sarah chose me.""
She removed a document.
It was dated six months before Sarah died.
The heading read:
*NOMINATION OF STANDBY GUARDIAN FOR EMILY CARTER.*
Laura's name appeared on the final page.
I looked at her.
"Sarah chose you?""
"Yes. Only if something happened to both you and her, or if you were legally unable to care for Emily.""
She sat down.
"She never intended to take Emily away from you, Michael. She trusted you completely.""
I examined the document.
There was Sarah's signature.
And beneath it was Laura's.
I finally understood the photograph.
Sarah had been preparing for the possibility that Emily might lose both parents.
"Why didn't you tell me?""
Laura looked down.
"Because Sarah asked me not to. She wanted you to enjoy your marriage without feeling that she was questioning your judgment.""
She took a deep breath.
"But she also asked me to protect Emily if things went wrong.""
I looked toward Vanessa.
She was staring at the document.
Laura continued.
"Three weeks before Sarah died, she called me. She told me she'd discovered something disturbing about Vanessa and Derek. She said they were trying to gain control over Emily's financial future.""
Brianna sat forward.
"Did she tell you about my biological father?""
Laura nodded.
"She knew about Thomas.""
Brianna covered her mouth.
"How?""
"She found the paternity report and the original agreement. She was worried that the adults involved were going to use you and Emily against each other.""
I looked at Laura.
"What did she leave you?""
Laura unzipped a smaller compartment in her handbag and removed a wooden box.
I recognized it.
It was the same box Sarah used to keep old photographs and letters.
Laura opened it.
Inside were several envelopes, a portable recording device, and a small memory card.
"Sarah gave these to me two days before the accident," she explained.
"She told me that if she couldn't explain everything to you herself, I should wait until there was enough evidence to protect Emily.""
I picked up the first envelope.
My name was written across it.
Laura placed a hand over mine.
"There's something you should know first. I sent you those photographs and recordings.""
I stared at her.
"You sent the anonymous messages?""
"Yes.""
"Why now?""
"Brianna contacted me last week. She told me about the rent payments and the missing college money. She was terrified.""
Brianna nodded.
"I found Laura's number in Mom's old phone.""
Laura smiled sadly.
"I knew something was wrong when she told me Emily was working two jobs to pay rent. I contacted Karen and asked her to help me get the evidence to you.""
I looked at the recording device.
"What is this?""
"Sarah's.""
Laura pressed a button.
A familiar voice filled the living room.
Derek.
"Sarah, you need to stop making this difficult.""
Sarah answered firmly.
"You're not Michael. Stop pretending.""
Vanessa closed her eyes.
The recording continued.
Derek laughed.
"You really think he'll believe you over his wife?""
"He'll believe the documents.""
"Then you'll never get the opportunity to show him.""
Sarah's voice became louder.
"Is that a threat?""
"Call it advice.""
Then another voice entered.
Vanessa.
"Did she sign?""
"No.""
"Then we have a problem.""
Sarah responded immediately.
"I will never sign anything giving you control over Emily.""
A chair scraped across the floor.
Then Derek said:
"Thomas will deal with the other problem.""
The recording ended.
Nobody moved.
I turned toward Laura.
"Is there more?""
She nodded.
"There is. Sarah recorded another conversation. This one happened the day of the accident.""
My heart began pounding.
"What did she say?""
Laura swallowed.
"She said she was afraid Thomas was going to follow her.""
I felt my legs weaken.
"Why didn't you tell me seven years ago?""
"Because I had only part of the story. I didn't know who was responsible, and I was afraid of making things worse for Emily. I should have pushed harder. I'm sorry.""
Karen collected the recordings.
"These need to go directly to the investigators.""
Laura nodded.
Then she turned toward Emily.
"Sweetheart, your mother left something for you.""
Emily slowly approached.
Laura handed her a sealed envelope.
"She told me you should open it when you were old enough to understand.""
Emily's hands shook as she broke the seal.
Inside was a handwritten letter.
She read the first few lines silently.
Then she began crying.
"What does it say?"" I asked.
Emily handed me the letter.
Sarah had written:
My beautiful Emily,
You never have to earn your place in someone's family.
You never have to pay for love.
And you should never believe that money determines whether you deserve a home.
If anyone ever makes you feel otherwise, remember that I wanted you to have a life where you were free to become whoever you wanted.
I love you beyond anything you will ever understand.
I pulled Emily into my arms.
Laura wiped her eyes.
Then she looked toward Vanessa.
"There's one last recording, Michael.""
She reached into the box and removed a memory card.
"Sarah said this one was the most important. It contains the conversation she had with Derek immediately before the accident.""
Karen took it carefully.
"Then let's listen.""
Laura hesitated.
"There's something else. I recognized the voice in this recording.""
I looked at her.
"Whose?""
Her expression hardened.
"Thomas's.""
May you like
She inserted the card into her laptop.
And when the recording began, we finally heard what had happened inside Thomas's car that night.
