Chapter 3: The Secret Behind the Car
I didn't sleep that night.
Vanessa locked herself in our bedroom. Brianna stayed upstairs, and Emily slept in the guest room because she didn't want to be near Vanessa.
I sat at the kitchen table until sunrise with three things in front of me.
The rent agreement.
The withdrawal authorization.
And a photograph of Sarah holding Emily as a newborn.
Sarah had been gone for seven years, but she'd left something behind for our daughter. She'd saved every birthday check, every tax refund she could afford, and every extra dollar from her nursing salary.
She once told me, "I don't need Emily to inherit a fortune, Michael. I just want her to have choices.""
I had promised her I'd protect that money.
And I'd failed.
At seven-thirty, I knocked on Emily's door.
"Sweetheart?""
She opened it slowly.
Her eyes were swollen.
"Morning, Daddy.""
I held up two cups of hot chocolate.
"Can I come in?""
She moved aside.
I sat on the edge of her bed.
"You're not paying another dollar to live here. Do you understand?""
She nodded.
"And your college account? I'll make sure nobody touches it again.""
She stared at her blanket.
"Vanessa said I'd have to leave when I turned eighteen.""
"That's not happening.""
"She said you wouldn't choose me.""
I stopped breathing for a second.
Then I reached for her hand.
"I should have noticed what was happening. I'm sorry I didn't.""
Emily started crying.
"I didn't want to make you choose between us.""
I pulled her into a hug.
"You are my daughter. You were never supposed to compete for a place in your own home.""
After breakfast, I drove to the bank and met with Patricia and the fraud department.
They provided copies of the withdrawal records, the receiving-account details, and the documents used to authorize the transfer.
The signature that appeared under my name was convincing.
But it wasn't mine.
I had signed thousands of business documents over the years. I knew the way my capital M connected to the rest of my name.
Someone had copied it.
The bank confirmed that its investigation would examine the disputed authorization and transaction trail. I also asked for a copy of every related document submitted since the account was opened.
One detail bothered me.
The $86,000 hadn't gone directly to Derek's account in one transaction.
It had been divided into three transfers.
The first was $35,000.
The second was $28,000.
The third was $23,000.
All three had been completed within six days.
I called Vanessa from the parking lot.
"Where's Derek?""
Silence.
"Vanessa?""
"I don't know.""
"You're telling me you transferred eighty-six thousand dollars to your ex-husband and don't know where he lives?""
"He moved recently.""
"Give me his number.""
She sighed.
"Michael, please don't do this.""
I ended the call.
Twenty minutes later, Brianna sent me a message.
*Can we talk without Mom?*
We met at a coffee shop near her college.
She arrived wearing yesterday's clothes, with dark circles under her eyes.
I ordered her a coffee.
She didn't touch it.
"Tell me about the car," I said.
Brianna looked down.
"Derek bought it for me.""
"With Emily's money?""
"Mom said it was a loan.""
"How much was the car?""
"Thirty-two thousand.""
I stared at her.
"Thirty-two thousand dollars?""
She nodded.
"It was supposed to be my graduation gift.""
"Your graduation is still months away.""
"I know.""
"Did you know where the money came from?""
Brianna rubbed her forehead.
"Not at first.""
"When did you find out?""
She was quiet for a long time.
"Last month.""
My stomach tightened.
"What happened?""
Brianna finally looked up.
"Derek came to the house. He asked Mom for another payment. They argued in the garage. I heard them.""
"What did he say?""
She swallowed.
"He said he wanted his money before he told you everything.""
I leaned forward.
"What everything?""
Brianna pulled her phone from her purse.
"I recorded part of their argument.""
She pressed play.
At first, there was only the sound of footsteps and a car door closing.
Then I heard Derek's voice.
"You told me the account was under control.""
Vanessa answered, "It is. Michael doesn't know anything.""
"That's what you said last time. I want the rest of my money.""
"You already got eighty-six thousand.""
"And I did what you asked.""
A pause followed.
Then Derek said something that made my blood turn cold.
"What happens when Michael finds out that the account wasn't the only thing you opened using his information?""
The recording ended.
I played it again.
Then a third time.
"What did he mean?"" I asked.
Brianna shook her head.
"I don't know. Mom deleted the messages between them.""
"Did you hear anything else?""
She hesitated.
"One thing.""
"What?""
"Derek said he had a copy of the original agreement.""
I frowned.
"What original agreement?""
Brianna looked frightened.
"He said Mom didn't just make Emily pay rent. She made a deal with him before you two got married.""
I slowly set down my coffee.
"About what?""
Brianna's voice dropped to a whisper.
"About Emily's house.""
I stared at her.
"Emily doesn't own this house.""
"I know.""
"Then what deal?""
Brianna opened her phone again and showed me an old photograph.
It was a picture of a handwritten document on Derek's kitchen table.
The date at the top was seven years earlier.
Three months before Vanessa and I got married.
And at the bottom were two signatures.
Vanessa's.
And Derek's.
I zoomed in.
The first paragraph mentioned my late wife's name.
The second mentioned Emily.
But the final paragraph contained a sentence that made my hands go numb.
*Upon Michael Carter's marriage to Vanessa Collins, all financial arrangements concerning his daughter shall be placed under Vanessa Collins's supervision.*
I read it twice.
Then I noticed something written in blue ink beside Derek's signature.
A handwritten amount.
*$150,000.*
Brianna watched my expression change.
"Michael," she whispered, "I think Mom and Dad made a deal about you before you ever married her.""
I looked at the date again.
Seven years ago.
And suddenly, I remembered something Vanessa had told me just before our wedding.
Something I hadn't thought about in years.
She'd said she wanted us to start our marriage with complete financial transparency.
I'd agreed.
I'd given her access to everything.
My accounts.
My insurance documents.
My daughter's education records.
Even the paperwork Sarah had left behind.
I looked at Brianna.
"Where's the original?""
She hesitated.
"Derek has it.""
"How do you know?""
Her eyes filled with tears.
"Because last night, he sent Mom a photograph of it.""
She turned her phone toward me.
A message appeared on the screen.
*Tell Michael the truth before I do. He needs to know what really happened to Sarah's money—and why I was paid in the first place.*
I read it again.
Then my phone began vibrating.
An unknown number.
I answered.
"Michael Carter?""
"Yes. Who is this?""
A familiar male voice spoke.
"This is Derek Collins. Vanessa's ex-husband.""
I stood up.
"What do you want?""
"I think we need to talk.""
"About the eighty-six thousand dollars you took from my daughter?""
He laughed quietly.
"That's only the beginning, Michael.""
Then he said the one thing I wasn't prepared to hear.
"Your wife didn't steal Emily's college money because she needed cash. She took it because she's been trying to keep something Sarah discovered before she died from coming to light.""
May you like
And before I could respond, Derek added:
"Ask Vanessa what happened the week your first wife died.""
