Chapter 7: The Woman Who Had Chosen Me

I read the handwritten note again.

**Michael Carter. Widower. One minor daughter.

Significant assets. Approach carefully.**

For seven years, I'd believed Vanessa had entered my life because she loved me.

Now I was looking at what appeared to be a shopping list.

Except the thing being purchased was my entire life.

"Where did you find this?"" I asked Brianna.

"In Mom's old filing cabinet. I was looking for my birth certificate when I was sixteen.""

"Why didn't you tell me?""

She lowered her head.

"Because Mom said it was a business document. She told me Derek was helping her organize her finances before she met you.""

I looked at Vanessa.

"Is that what this was?""

Vanessa folded her arms.

"You're twisting something you don't understand.""

"Then explain why my salary, property value, and life insurance were written on a document before we met.""

She shook her head.

"Derek was obsessed with money. He kept records of everyone. That's what he did.""

"Why was he keeping records of me?""

"He thought you were wealthy.""

"Was he wrong?""

She didn't answer.

I picked up the photograph Brianna had found.

There was another handwritten note beneath the first one.

*Stage One: Establish trust.*

*Stage Two: Obtain household financial access.*

*Stage Three: Secure control of Emily's assets.*

I felt sick.

"Vanessa, was marrying me part of a plan?""

She immediately started crying.

"Michael, I did love you.""

"That isn't an answer.""

"I had been through a terrible marriage. Derek controlled everything. I was trying to give Brianna a better life.""

"So you decided to take someone else's?""

"That's not what happened!""

I placed the document on the counter.

"Then why did you follow these stages?""

Vanessa wiped her cheeks.

"Those were Derek's words, not mine.""

Brianna stepped between us.

"Mom, stop lying.""

Vanessa stared at her.

"Excuse me?""

"You told me Michael was the first man who ever made you feel safe. But I found this folder years ago. I asked you about it, and you told me Dad had made the documents because he wanted to know whether Michael could support us.""

Her voice cracked.

"I believed you.""

Vanessa reached for her daughter.

"Brianna, honey, you have no idea how complicated adult relationships can be.""

Brianna stepped away.

"I'm nineteen. I'm old enough to know that you stole from a seventeen-year-old.""

Vanessa's expression hardened.

"Everything I've done has been for this family.""

I shook my head.

"No. You've been using that sentence to excuse everything you've done to this family.""

I took photographs of every document with my phone.

Then I called Karen.

She answered immediately.

"Michael?""

"I found the original planning folder. It contains financial information about me from before my marriage to Vanessa.""

There was a pause.

"Don't confront her further. Photograph everything, preserve the originals, and bring them to my office.""

"There's something else. Brianna found a photograph of Vanessa and Derek outside Sarah's hospital room.""

Karen became very quiet.

"Michael, does the photograph have a date?""

"Yes. The day before Sarah died.""

"Bring that, too.""

I ended the call.

Vanessa was standing near the stairs.

"You're really going to destroy our marriage over a few old papers?""

I looked at her.

"You destroyed it when you made my daughter's childhood a business arrangement.""

She walked toward me.

"I made mistakes. But you weren't exactly a perfect husband, either. You were always traveling. You left me to handle everything.""

"I trusted you to handle the household. I didn't authorize you to steal.""

"You have no idea how expensive raising two daughters is!""

I pointed toward Brianna.

"Then explain the designer shopping bags.""

Brianna looked down.

Vanessa's mouth tightened.

Suddenly, Emily appeared at the top of the stairs.

"Daddy?""

I turned.

"Sweetheart, everything okay?""

She came downstairs slowly.

"I heard you talking.""

Vanessa immediately changed her expression.

"Emily, your father is very upset right now. He's misunderstanding things.""

Emily held up her phone.

"I found something, too.""

I frowned.

"What did you find?""

"An old voicemail on the family laptop. I was looking for a school document, and it was saved in the downloads folder.""

She pressed play.

A man's voice filled the kitchen.

Derek.

"Vanessa, you need to stop pretending this is going to work. Sarah already knows about the paperwork.""

Then Vanessa's voice.

"She doesn't have proof.""

"She has copies.""

"Then get them back!""

"She's threatening to tell Michael.""

A short silence followed.

Then Derek spoke again.

"There's another problem. She wants to change Emily's beneficiary arrangements.""

Vanessa's response was unmistakable.

"She can't. Not after everything we've put in motion.""

The recording ended.

Nobody moved.

I looked at Vanessa.

"Everything we've put in motion?""

Her eyes filled with tears.

"That recording is out of context.""

Emily shook her head.

"Mom, why were you talking about my mother like that?""

Vanessa stepped toward her.

"Emily, darling—"

"Don't call me that.""

It was the first time Emily had spoken to her that way.

I pulled my daughter close.

Then Brianna noticed something on the laptop screen.

The voicemail was part of a folder containing several recordings.

She clicked on the next file.

The title was a date.

November 21.

The day before Sarah died.

Derek's voice came through first.

"She thinks Michael will believe her.""

Vanessa answered.

"Then make sure she doesn't get the chance to show him.""

My heart stopped.

And then another voice spoke.

A voice I hadn't heard in seven years.

Sarah.

"If either of you touches my daughter, Michael will know everything.""

The recording abruptly ended.

Vanessa covered her mouth.

I stared at the laptop.

Sarah hadn't been silent in her final days.

May you like

She had been fighting.

And someone in my house had known exactly what she was fighting against.
