Chapter 11: The Accident That Wasn't an Accident

I drove home so fast that I barely remembered the journey.

My hands gripped the steering wheel.

Thomas Reed.

Sarah's brother.

The man who had held Emily at her mother's funeral.

The man whose name appeared beside Vanessa's on a seven-year-old hospital document.

The man who had just admitted to stealing from my daughter.

Now his name was connected to Sarah's final night.

When I arrived, Brianna was waiting near the front door.

She held a thick brown folder.

"Michael.""

I stepped inside.

"Show me.""

She placed the folder on the dining table.

Inside were printed emails, an old insurance claim, and a police document.

I immediately noticed the date.

November 22.

The night Sarah died.

I remembered that night clearly.

I had been at home with Emily when the hospital called.

Sarah had been driving back from a medical appointment when another vehicle struck her car at an intersection.

The official report described it as a collision involving a distracted driver.

Thomas had told me that he arrived at the hospital shortly after the accident.

He had even helped me speak to the insurance company.

I had never questioned him.

I opened the police report.

The first page confirmed the driver's identity.

Thomas Reed.

The second page contained a statement from a witness who had reported seeing the vehicle accelerate before impact.

But the most disturbing detail was on the final page.

Under additional remarks, an officer had written:

*Driver stated that he was traveling to meet Sarah Carter regarding a personal financial dispute.*

I looked at Brianna.

"Did you know about this?""

She shook her head.

"No. I found it in Mom's filing cabinet.""

I continued reading.

The report stated that Thomas had been questioned but not charged. The available evidence at the time had not established intentional wrongdoing.

There were no allegations of deliberate harm in the original conclusion.

Still, the timing was impossible to ignore.

"Where's your mother?"" I asked.

Brianna looked upstairs.

"In the bedroom.""

I walked toward the staircase.

Vanessa emerged from the hallway wearing a robe.

"What are you doing?""

I held up the police report.

"Tell me why Thomas was involved in Sarah's accident.""

Her face changed immediately.

"Michael, please.""

"Did you know?""

She looked at Brianna.

"Why did you go through my things?""

Brianna stepped forward.

"Because you keep lying to everyone!""

Vanessa's voice cracked.

"Go upstairs.""

"No!""

I placed the report on the table.

"Your ex-husband stole from my daughter. Your brother-in-law forged my signature. And now Thomas appears in the police report from the night Sarah died. How much more do I have to discover before you tell me the truth?""

Vanessa started shaking.

"Thomas didn't plan an accident.""

I stared at her.

"I didn't say he did.""

She covered her mouth.

I felt my stomach tighten.

"What do you know?""

She sat down.

"Sarah called Thomas that afternoon.""

"Why?""

"She had discovered the original agreement. She told him she was going to expose everything.""

"And?""

"Thomas went to meet her.""

"At the hospital?""

Vanessa shook her head.

"She had already left.""

I leaned forward.

"Where did they meet?""

"At a café near the highway.""

"Then what happened?""

"Sarah was angry. She told him she had copies of everything, including the documents showing his relationship with me.""

Brianna looked at her mother.

"Why would she have those?""

"Because she'd found the paternity report.""

Vanessa began crying.

"Sarah said she would tell Derek the truth. She wanted Brianna to know who her real father was.""

I looked at the report again.

"So Thomas went after her?""

"He wanted the documents back.""

"Did you know he was going to meet her?""

Vanessa nodded.

"And did you know he was following her afterward?""

She started crying harder.

"Yes.""

The room became silent.

Brianna moved backward.

"You knew?""

Vanessa lowered her face.

"I told him not to follow her. I told him to leave her alone.""

I stared at my wife.

"Then why was he driving the vehicle that hit her?""

Vanessa looked at me.

"They argued. Thomas said Sarah was threatening to destroy his family. He followed her car because he wanted to talk.""

"That's not an explanation.""

"I know!""

She stood suddenly.

"He called me that night. He said there had been an accident. He said Sarah was hurt, but he didn't know how badly.""

My voice dropped.

"And what did you do?""

"I went to the hospital.""

"Using my name?""

Vanessa nodded.

My hands began trembling.

"Why?""

"Because I was scared he'd be arrested. He was Brianna's father. I couldn't let him go to prison.""

Brianna stared at her.

"So you helped him hide what happened to Sarah?""

Vanessa started sobbing.

"I didn't know the full details!""

"You knew enough!"" Brianna shouted.

I turned toward Vanessa.

"Did you tell the police that Thomas was meeting Sarah about financial documents?""

"No.""

"Did you mention that he had followed her?""

She shook her head.

"Why?""

"Because Derek told me to stay quiet.""

I stared at her.

"Derek?""

Vanessa nodded.

"He said the police would find out about the financial agreement. He said everything would fall apart.""

I slowly backed away.

For seven years, I had believed Sarah's death was a terrible accident.

Now I was hearing that the man responsible for stealing from her daughter had followed her on the night she died.

And my wife had known.

I took out my phone.

"I'm calling the police.""

Vanessa lunged forward.

"Michael, don't!""

I stepped away.

"You've had seven years to tell the truth.""

She dropped to her knees.

"I didn't kill Sarah!""

"I didn't say you did.""

"But I didn't!""

I looked at her.

"Then you can explain everything to the investigators.""

I called Karen instead and explained what we'd found. She told me to preserve the report, avoid confronting Thomas, and contact law enforcement through the appropriate channels.

Before we could finish the conversation, my phone received a message from an unknown number.

It contained a photograph.

Thomas standing beside Sarah's damaged vehicle.

Underneath was a sentence.

*Your brother-in-law didn't just follow Sarah that night. He returned to the scene after the ambulance left.*

I stared at the message.

Then another arrived.

*Check the photograph carefully. Look at the passenger seat.*

I enlarged the image.

There was a second person inside the car.

A woman.

I zoomed in.

The face was partially obscured by the window, but I recognized the coat.

Vanessa's coat.

I slowly looked up at my wife.

"Vanessa.""

She started shaking her head.

"Michael, don't.""

"Why were you in Thomas's car that night?""

May you like

She covered her face.

And for the first time, I understood that the story of Sarah's final hours was far worse than anything I'd imagined.
