Chapter 6: The Visitor Who Wasn't Me
I stared at the visitor photograph until the letters blurred.
"Karen, I wasn't at the hospital that day.""
She took the photograph from me and examined it carefully.
"Are you absolutely certain?""
"I was home with Emily. Sarah was receiving treatment, and I'd planned to visit the following morning.""
Karen checked the date again.
"November twenty-first.""
"Yes.""
She opened her computer.
"Give me a moment.""
I stood beside her desk while she searched through an old case file.
After several minutes, she found a scanned document.
It was Sarah's final hospital visitor log.
She enlarged the page.
There were three entries.
Vanessa Collins.
Derek Collins.
Michael Carter.
The third entry had been recorded at 4:42 p.m.
I pointed at it.
"That's not my handwriting.""
Karen examined the signature.
"No. It's quite different from the signature on your driver's license.""
"Who signed me in?""
"The hospital should still have archived records.""
I called the hospital immediately.
After explaining that the matter involved suspected identity fraud and a deceased patient's financial records, I requested that the compliance department preserve the visitor records.
They couldn't immediately give me private visitor information, but they agreed to review the record and follow up through the appropriate process.
Karen then handed me another document.
"This is the original insurance beneficiary designation Sarah signed.""
I read it.
The policy named Emily as the sole beneficiary.
The trustee was an independent financial institution.
Vanessa's name appeared nowhere.
"Then how did she get access to the other account?""
"That's exactly what the investigation needs to establish.""
I looked at the date on the beneficiary form.
Sarah had signed it just four months before her death.
"She knew something was wrong.""
Karen nodded.
"She suspected it. That's why she came to me.""
I placed the photograph in my jacket.
"Did she leave anything else?""
Karen opened another cabinet.
"There is one more item.""
She brought out a small envelope with my name on it.
Inside was a USB drive and a short handwritten note.
Mike,
I couldn't trust the paperwork alone. Listen to this before you confront anyone.
Please protect Emily.
I stared at the drive.
"Do you know what's on it?""
"No. Sarah asked me to keep it sealed.""
I thanked Karen and drove straight home.
Vanessa was in the living room when I walked through the front door.
She sat on the sofa with a glass of water beside her. A television played quietly in the background.
She looked up.
"Where have you been?""
"With Karen Whitmore.""
Her glass stopped halfway to her mouth.
"What?""
"Sarah's attorney.""
Vanessa placed the glass down.
"Why?""
I removed the photograph from my jacket and placed it on the coffee table.
"Do you remember this day?""
She glanced at it.
For a moment, her face was completely expressionless.
Then she shook her head.
"No.""
"That's interesting.""
"Michael, I don't know what you're talking about.""
"You visited Sarah in the hospital with Derek seven years ago.""
Vanessa sat straighter.
"I visited her because I was concerned.""
"You took someone else's name onto the visitor log.""
Her face changed.
"Who told you that?""
"That's not important.""
She stood.
"Michael, you're digging into something you don't understand.""
I stepped closer.
"Then explain it.""
She rubbed her temples.
"I was trying to help.""
"By pretending to be me?""
"I never pretended to be you.""
"Then why is my name on the visitor log?""
Vanessa looked toward the staircase.
"Where's Emily?""
"Upstairs.""
"Good. She shouldn't hear this.""
"You're right. She shouldn't have had to hear any of it in the first place.""
Vanessa's jaw tightened.
I held up the USB drive.
"What did Sarah discover?""
"Nothing.""
"She left an envelope with her attorney.""
"Sarah was sick, Michael. She wasn't thinking clearly.""
The words made something inside me snap.
"Don't you dare use her illness to dismiss what she found.""
Vanessa lowered her voice.
"You have no idea what I went through during that time.""
I stared at her.
"Neither did Sarah, apparently.""
She walked toward the kitchen.
I followed.
"One hundred and eighty thousand dollars, Vanessa. That was Sarah's insurance policy for Emily.""
Vanessa froze.
"That money was never yours," I continued.
"And you knew it.""
She turned around.
"Sarah made everything difficult.""
I couldn't believe what I'd heard.
"She was dying.""
"She didn't trust me!""
"Maybe she had a reason.""
Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.
For the first time, I saw something other than anger in them.
Desperation.
"Michael, I made mistakes. But I didn't do everything Derek says.""
"Then tell me what you did.""
She shook her head.
"You won't understand.""
"Try me.""
She looked at me for several seconds.
Then she whispered, "Derek was supposed to destroy those documents.""
My blood ran cold.
"Which documents?""
"Everything Sarah found.""
"Why?""
Vanessa began crying.
"Because Sarah was going to tell you about the agreement. She was going to ruin everything before we even had a chance.""
I stared at her.
"Everything?""
She wiped her face.
"Our life. Brianna's future. Everything I had worked for.""
I reached into my pocket and pulled out my phone.
"I want the truth, Vanessa.""
She noticed the screen.
"Are you recording me?""
"I'm documenting what you're saying.""
She stepped backward.
"Turn it off.""
"No.""
Her voice rose.
"Michael, you don't understand! Derek wasn't the only person who could have exposed us!""
I stopped.
"What does that mean?""
Vanessa covered her mouth.
Too late.
I looked directly at her.
"Who else?""
She started shaking her head.
"Forget I said that.""
"Who else knew?""
The front door suddenly opened.
Brianna walked in carrying a backpack.
She froze when she saw us.
"Mom?""
Vanessa turned toward her.
"Not now, Brianna.""
But Brianna was staring at the documents on the kitchen counter.
She picked up the photograph.
Then her face drained of color.
"Where did you get this?""
"From Sarah's attorney," I answered.
Brianna looked at her mother.
"Mom, you said nobody had that picture.""
Vanessa took a step toward her.
"Put it down.""
Brianna backed away.
"Why did you tell me Sarah never knew about the agreement?""
I felt my chest tighten.
"What agreement?""
Brianna looked at me.
Then she said something that turned the entire situation upside down.
"Dad, there's something you don't know about my mother.""
Vanessa's eyes widened.
"BRIANNA!""
But Brianna continued.
"She didn't meet you by accident. She knew exactly who you were before you ever asked her out.""
I stared at Vanessa.
She didn't deny it.
Brianna began crying.
"Mom kept a folder with your name on it. I found it when I was sixteen.""
"What was in it?"" I asked.
Brianna reached into her backpack and pulled out a photograph of an old document.
It was a printed profile containing my salary, my property value, my life insurance information, and the details of Sarah's estate.
At the bottom was a handwritten note.
**Michael Carter. Widower. One minor daughter.
Significant assets. Approach carefully.**
I looked at Vanessa.
"Who wrote this?""
Brianna's voice broke.
"Derek.""
I couldn't move.
Then she showed me the final page.
It contained a photograph taken outside a hospital seven years earlier.
Sarah was sitting in a wheelchair.
Vanessa was standing beside her.
May you like
And on the back, in Derek's handwriting, were seven words:
*The first wife knows about the plan.*
