Chapter 9: The Person We Never Suspected

The photograph stayed on my kitchen table all night.

I couldn’t stop looking at it.

Not because it was frightening.

Because it represented something worse.

Betrayal.

Someone had watched me during one of the most vulnerable moments of my life.

Someone knew about my surgery.

Someone knew about the money.

Someone knew exactly when I would need it.

And they had planned around it.

The next morning, Lauren sat across from me.

She looked like she hadn’t slept.

“Dad.””

I looked up.

“I need to tell you something.””

I already knew it wouldn’t be easy.

“Tell me.””

She took a deep breath.

“Before Jason got arrested, someone came to our house.””

“Who?””

She hesitated.

“Marilyn.””

I sat back.

“What did she want?””

“She asked questions.””

“About what?””

Lauren looked ashamed.

“About you.””

My stomach tightened.

“What kind of questions?””

“She asked how much your surgery would cost.””

The room went quiet.

“When?””

A month.

Long before the money disappeared.

Long before the arrest.

I looked away.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because I didn’t think it mattered.””

I closed my eyes.

That sentence hurt.

Because so many disasters began with those exact words.

I didn’t think it mattered.

Lauren reached across the table.

“I’m sorry.””

I moved my hand away.

Not angrily.

Just because I needed space.

“I need to know everything.””

She nodded.

“She also asked about your emergency account.””

My heart sank.

“Why?””

“I don’t know.””

“Yes, you do.””

She looked down.

“She said something strange.””

“What?””

Lauren swallowed.

“She said, ‘Your father has money sitting there that he doesn’t even use.’”

I felt cold.

That wasn’t a misunderstanding.

That was information.

Someone had been studying my life.

Later that afternoon, Deputy Collins arrived.

He looked serious.

“We found another piece of the puzzle.””

I let him in.

“What now?””

He held up a document.

“We traced communication between Jason and Marilyn.””

Lauren looked at him.

“What did they say?””

“They discussed the account.””

Her face fell.

“So Jason lied.””

“Yes.””

I looked at the deputy.

“Is he the one who planned everything?””

He paused.

“That’s complicated.””

I hated that answer.

“Why?””

“Because Jason was involved.””

My jaw tightened.

“But?””

“But we believe someone else was directing him.””

I looked toward the window.

“Marilyn.””

Deputy Collins nodded.

“Possibly.””

Lauren looked sick.

“I was going to marry him.””

Nobody answered.

Because there was nothing anyone could say.

That evening, I received another call.

Unknown number.

I almost ignored it.

But something told me not to.

“Hello?””

A man’s voice answered.

“Mr. Harrison.””

My body went still.

“Who is this?””

“You don’t know me.””

“Then why are you calling?””

A pause.

Then:

“Because I know who really emptied your account.””

I tightened my grip on the phone.

“Who?””

The man lowered his voice.

“It wasn’t Jason.””

I looked at Lauren.

She was watching me.

“Then who?””

The man said:

“The person you trust most.””

My heart stopped.

“What are you talking about?””

Before he answered, the line went silent.

I looked at the phone.

Then slowly turned toward Lauren.

She looked confused.

“Dad?””

I didn’t know what to believe anymore.

May you like

Because the person who betrayed me…

might not have been the person I thought.
