Chapter 6: The Final Warning
I stood in the hallway, listening to Jason’s voice on the other side of the door.
A man who had taken my money.
A man who had lied to my daughter.
A man who still believed he could control the situation.
“Lauren,” I whispered.
She looked at me.
“Don’t answer him.””
Her face was full of fear.
“I need to know what he wants.””
“No.””
“Dad…”
I softened slightly.
Not because I trusted Jason.
Because I could see my daughter was trapped.
Not by a lock.
By guilt.
By years of believing she could fix someone who never wanted to change.
The knocking stopped.
Then Jason spoke again.
“I know you’re in there.””
Lauren stepped closer.
“How?””
I shook my head.
“He’s trying to scare you.””
Then Jason lowered his voice.
“Lauren, I’m not the enemy.””
I almost laughed.
Not because it was funny.
Because the confidence was unbelievable.
The person who created the disaster was standing outside pretending to be the victim.
Lauren reached for the door.
I stopped her.
“Wait.””
She looked at me.
“What if he’s telling the truth?””
I stared at her.
“After everything?””
Her eyes filled.
“I just need to hear it.””
I understood.
Sometimes people need to hear the final lie before they can accept the truth.
I stepped back.
She opened the door.
Jason stood there wearing a clean shirt and a worried expression.
The same expression he probably used every time he needed someone to rescue him.
“Lauren.””
She didn’t hug him.
She didn’t apologize.
She just stared.
“What did you do?””
His expression changed.
“What?””
“The money.””
He glanced at me.
Then back at her.
“Your dad is making this complicated.””
My jaw tightened.
Lauren noticed.
“No.””
Jason frowned.
“No?””
“You used my father’s surgery money.””
He stepped forward.
“I was going to fix it.””
“When?””
He didn’t answer.
The same silence.
Again.
Lauren shook her head.
“You lied to me.””
Jason’s voice became softer.
“I was protecting you.””
“No.””
She stepped back.
“You were protecting yourself.””
For the first time, Jason looked angry.
Not hurt.
Angry.
“You really want to do this?””
I watched him carefully.
Because that was the moment people revealed themselves.
When kindness stopped working.
“I sacrificed everything for you,” he said to Lauren.
She stared at him.
“I sacrificed my father.””
Jason’s face changed.
Only for a second.
But I saw it.
Fear.
“You don’t understand what happens if I go down.””
I stepped forward.
“Maybe you should have thought about that before using my account.””
Jason looked at me.
“This isn’t your problem.””
I almost couldn’t believe those words.
“My money.””
“My surgery.””
“My daughter.””
I pointed toward the driveway.
“You made it my problem.””
He looked away.
Then his phone rang.
Jason checked it.
His entire face changed.
The confidence disappeared.
“What happened?”” Lauren asked.
He didn’t answer.
“Jason?””
He looked at both of us.
Then slowly put the phone in his pocket.
“What was that?”” I asked.
He stayed silent.
Lauren’s voice trembled.
“Jason.””
Finally, he spoke.
“They found the records.””
My eyes narrowed.
“What records?””
He looked at me.
And for the first time, he wasn’t pretending.
“They know where the money came from.””
A cold feeling moved through me.
Then he added:
“And they know I wasn’t the one who made the transfer.””
Lauren froze.
“What are you saying?””
Jason looked directly at her.
“I’m saying…”
He paused.
“…someone else planned this before I ever got arrested.””
And then Lauren looked at me.
May you like
Because suddenly, the question wasn’t just who stole my money.
It was who helped them do it.
