Chapter 14: Evelyn’s Final Message
The police found Thomas two hours later.
Not arrested.
Not missing.
Just sitting alone in his car outside an old storage facility.
When Deputy Collins called me, I expected the worst.
Instead, he said:
“Mr. Harrison, you need to come here.””
I arrived with Lauren.
This time, neither of us questioned whether we should go together.
We were done letting people separate us.
Thomas sat inside a small office.
His eyes were red.
“I’m sorry.””
Those two words again.
I almost didn’t want to hear them.
But this time, there was something different.
Pain.
Real pain.
“What happened?”” I asked.
Thomas looked at Lauren.
“Your mother was right.””
Lauren sat down.
“About what?””
“About the person behind everything.””
My heart started racing.
“Tell us.””
Thomas reached into a bag and placed an old envelope on the table.
“I found this after Evelyn passed away.””
Lauren stared.
“Why didn’t you give it to us?””
Thomas looked ashamed.
“Because I was scared.””
“Of who?””
He looked at me.
“Of the person Evelyn suspected.””
I opened the envelope.
Inside was another letter.
Evelyn’s handwriting.
But this one was addressed to me.
My hands trembled.
I read it.
*“My love, if you are reading this, something happened that I feared.””*
I swallowed.
*“I need you to know something. Lauren is not the enemy.””*
I looked at my daughter.
She covered her mouth.
The next line blurred my vision.
*“She may make mistakes. She may choose the wrong people. But she would never intentionally destroy you.””*
I closed my eyes.
After everything…
my wife still knew our daughter better than I did.
I continued.
*“The person you should be careful of is someone who knows how much you trust them.””*
I looked at Thomas.
He lowered his head.
“I’m sorry.””
“Who?”” I asked.
Thomas took a breath.
Then he said:
“Your financial advisor.””
I froze.
My financial advisor.
The man who had helped Evelyn and me manage everything after retirement.
The man who always called to check on me.
The man who knew every account.
Every password recovery question.
Every detail.
“Richard?””
Thomas nodded.
“Richard Hale.””
Lauren looked confused.
“Why?””
Thomas explained.
“Evelyn discovered irregularities before she died.””
My hands tightened around the letter.
“Why didn’t she tell me?””
“Because she was afraid confronting him would make him disappear.””
Deputy Collins entered the room.
“I’m glad you found this.””
I looked at him.
“You knew?””
“We suspected.””
My anger rose.
“You knew someone was targeting me?””
“We needed evidence.””
I stood.
“My surgery fund was stolen.””
“I know.””
“My daughter was blamed.””
“I know.””
He looked at Lauren.
“And that was the point.””
The room went quiet.
Richard didn’t just steal money.
He created a situation where my daughter looked guilty.
He used the person I loved most as a shield.
That evening, Deputy Collins called.
“We found Richard.””
I answered immediately.
“Where?””
“At his office.””
“And?””
“He’s willing to talk.””
I frowned.
“Why?””
A pause.
Then:
“Because he says he has proof that Lauren was the one who planned everything.””
I looked at Lauren.
She looked terrified.
Not because she was guilty.
Because she knew what was happening.
Someone was making one final attempt to destroy her.
I arrived at Richard’s office the next morning.
He sat behind his desk calmly.
Too calmly.
“Mr. Harrison.””
I stared at him.
“You stole from me.””
He smiled slightly.
“No.””
He leaned back.
“Your daughter did.””
Lauren stepped forward.
“That’s a lie.””
Richard looked at her.
“You signed everything.””
Her face changed.
Because technically…
she had.
Richard smiled.
“That’s the problem with trusting people.””
I looked at him.
“You framed her.””
He shook his head.
“No.””
Then he opened a drawer.
Inside was a folder.
He placed it on the desk.
“The truth is much worse.””
I stared at the folder.
Richard pushed it toward me.
“Open it.””
I reached for it.
