Chapter 11: The Friend Who Knew Too Much

The name on the paper belonged to someone I never expected.

Thomas Miller.

My wife Evelyn’s closest friend.

For thirty years, Thomas had been part of our family.

He attended birthdays.

He helped repair things around the house.

He stood beside me at Evelyn’s funeral.

When I was struggling after losing her, Thomas was one of the people who checked on me.

I trusted him.

Maybe too much.

Lauren looked at me.

“Dad?””

I couldn’t answer.

“Do you know him?””

I nodded slowly.

“He was your mother’s friend.””

Her expression changed.

“Why would he sign anything?””

“I don’t know.””

But deep down, I was afraid I did.

The next morning, I called him.

“Thomas, I need to ask you something.””

His voice sounded surprised.

“Of course. Is everything okay?””

“No.””

A pause.

“What happened?””

I looked at the paper in front of me.

“Did you sign anything related to my financial accounts?””

Silence.

Not long.

But long enough.

“Thomas?””

Finally, he spoke.

“Where did you find that?””

My stomach tightened.

“So you know what I’m talking about.””

He sighed.

“Listen to me.””

“No.””

My voice became firm.

“You listen.””

I had spent weeks being lied to.

By my daughter.

By Jason.

By everyone.

“I need the truth.””

Thomas was quiet.

Then he said:

“I was trying to protect Evelyn.””

My heart stopped.

“What does Evelyn have to do with this?””

“She knew.””

I gripped the phone.

“Knew what?””

“That Jason wasn’t who he claimed to be.””

I sat down.

“What?””

Thomas continued.

“Before she passed away, Evelyn discovered something about him.””

My mind went back.

My wife.

The woman who always noticed things I missed.

“She never told me.””

“She wanted to.””

“Then why didn’t she?””

His voice became sad.

“Because she was afraid.””

“Afraid of what?””

“That Lauren wouldn’t believe her.””

I closed my eyes.

Because that sounded exactly like something Evelyn would say.

She loved our daughter.

Sometimes so much that she protected her from painful truths.

“What did she find?””

Thomas sighed.

“Financial problems.””

I looked at the paper.

“And you signed this because?””

“Because Evelyn asked me.””

That sentence changed everything.

“Why?””

“Because she wanted a safeguard.””

“A safeguard?””

“Yes.””

Thomas lowered his voice.

“She knew Lauren might someday need protection from Jason.””

I stood.

“Wait.””

My thoughts raced.

“You’re saying Evelyn knew?””

“She suspected.””

“Suspected what?””

“That Jason was using people.””

I looked toward the hallway.

At Evelyn’s picture.

My wife had seen the danger.

And she tried to protect us.

Even after she was gone.

“Thomas,” I said quietly.

“Where is the original document?””

Another silence.

Then:

“I don’t have it.””

“Who does?””

He hesitated.

“Marilyn.””

My blood ran cold.

“How?””

“Because she took it.””

“Why?””

Thomas didn’t answer.

Then I heard something strange.

A door closing.

“Thomas?””

No response.

“Thomas?””

His voice returned, but it was different.

Scared.

“Mr. Harrison…”

“What?””

“You need to leave your house.””

I froze.

“Why?””

“Because if Marilyn knows you found that document…”

The line cut out.

I immediately called back.

No answer.

Lauren looked at me.

“What happened?””

I grabbed my keys.

“We’re leaving.””

“Dad?””

“Now.””

As we reached the front door, a shadow moved across the window.

Someone was standing outside.

Watching.

Lauren whispered:

“Who is that?””

I looked through the glass.

And my blood went cold.

May you like

Because the person standing in my driveway…

was Thomas.
