Chapter 4: The Lie Beneath the Lie

“He said the money was never for bail.””

Lauren’s words stayed in the air between us.

For a few seconds, I couldn’t move.

I thought I had already reached the worst moment.

Finding out my daughter emptied my surgery account.

Watching her defend Jason.

Realizing she chose a man over her own father’s life.

But somehow, there was another layer.

Another secret.

“What does that mean?”” I asked.

Lauren looked terrified.

“I don’t know.””

“You just said Jason told you.””

“He said it wasn’t supposed to be used that way.””

I stared at her.

“Lauren, stop protecting him.””

“I’m not.””

“You are.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I spent months believing I was helping him. I thought he was trapped. I thought he made one mistake.””

“And now?””

She looked down at her phone.

“Now I don’t know what’s real.””

That sentence hurt me more than I expected.

Because I knew that feeling.

The feeling of looking at someone you loved and wondering if you ever truly knew them.

I walked toward the window.

Outside, my driveway was empty.

But I could still see Jason’s truck sitting there the day before.

The man my daughter defended.

The man she risked my life for.

“What exactly did he say?”” I asked.

Lauren hesitated.

“Dad…”

“What did he say?””

She closed her eyes.

“He said he needed the money because someone was threatening him.””

I frowned.

“Who?””

“He wouldn’t tell me.””

“And you gave him thirty-eight thousand dollars?””

She flinched.

“I thought his life was falling apart.””

“My life was falling apart.””

The words came out quieter than I intended.

Lauren looked at me.

“I know.””

“No, you don’t.””

I sat down slowly.

“If you knew, you wouldn’t have done it.””

She looked like she wanted to argue.

But she didn’t.

That was the first time she accepted the truth without fighting me.

The next morning, Deputy Collins called.

“Mr. Harrison, we need to speak again.””

My stomach tightened.

“About Jason?””

“Yes.””

I met him at the county office an hour later.

This time, he didn’t have a folder.

He had a look on his face that told me whatever he was about to say would change things.

“Mr. Harrison, we reviewed the account activity.””

I nodded.

“And?””

He leaned forward.

“The transfer was authorized using Lauren’s access.””

I already knew that.

“But there’s more.””

I waited.

“The money was moved into an account connected to a business.””

“What business?””

He looked at his notes.

“Reed Automotive Solutions.””

Jason’s name.

I felt my jaw tighten.

“His company?””

“Yes.””

“Then he lied.””

Deputy Collins didn’t answer immediately.

“We’re still investigating.””

I looked at him.

“But you know something.””

He sighed.

“We found that the business account had several recent withdrawals.””

“How much?””

He hesitated.

“Nearly the entire amount.””

I stared at him.

The money that was supposed to save my life.

Gone.

Not because of an emergency.

Not because of an accident.

Because someone decided my future was something they could spend.

When I returned home, Lauren was sitting on the porch.

She looked exhausted.

“Did you find out?””

I nodded.

She stood.

“What happened?””

“Jason transferred the money to his business account.””

Her face changed.

“No.””

I watched her reaction.

Not anger.

Not denial.

Shock.

Real shock.

“He told me it was for bail.””

I looked at her.

“Did you ever see a bail receipt?””

She opened her mouth.

Then stopped.

“No.””

“Did you ever ask?””

She looked away.

“No.””

I nodded slowly.

“That’s the part you need to understand, Lauren.””

She wiped her eyes.

“I know.””

“You trusted him with my life.””

She whispered:

“I’m sorry.””

I wanted to accept that.

I wanted to pull my daughter into a hug and tell her everything would be okay.

But my chest still hurt.

My surgery was still three days away.

And my money was still gone.

That night, I received a message from an unknown number.

Just one sentence.

*Ask your daughter why Jason needed the money before he got arrested.*

I stared at the screen.

Then another message appeared.

*She doesn’t know who he really is.*

My heart started racing.

I looked across the room at Lauren.

She was sleeping on the couch, exhausted from crying.

I didn’t want to believe it.

But I had learned something painful.

The truth usually hurts less when you discover it early.

I picked up my phone and called the number.

Someone answered immediately.

A woman’s voice whispered:

“Mr. Harrison?””

“Yes. Who is this?””

A pause.

Then:

“I’m Jason’s ex-wife.””

May you like

And what she said next made me sit down.

“He didn’t get arrested because of one mistake.””
