Chapter 12: The Truth Evelyn Left Behind
Thomas stood outside my house.
The same man who had just warned me to leave.
The same man whose voice sounded afraid over the phone.
Now he was standing in my driveway.
Watching us.
Lauren moved closer to me.
“Dad…”
I held up my hand.
“Stay behind me.””
Not because I thought Thomas would hurt us.
Because I no longer knew who to trust.
I opened the door slightly.
“Thomas.””
He looked relieved.
“Thank God.””
I didn’t open it further.
“You told me to leave.””
“I know.””
“Then why are you here?””
He looked over his shoulder.
“Because I realized something.””
“What?””
His face was full of regret.
“I made a mistake.””
I stared at him.
“Thirty years of friendship, and everyone keeps saying that.””
He lowered his head.
“I deserve that.””
Lauren stepped forward.
“Mr. Miller, what happened?””
Thomas looked at her.
“I tried to protect your mother’s secret.””
“My mother?””
He nodded.
“She knew something was wrong.””
Lauren’s eyes filled.
“Why didn’t she tell me?””
Thomas looked at the floor.
“Because she was your mother.””
That answer hurt.
Because it was true.
Mothers sometimes carry pain alone because they believe they are protecting their children.
Thomas continued.
“Evelyn created a file.””
“What kind of file?”” I asked.
“Everything she discovered about Jason.””
My heart raced.
“Where is it?””
Thomas looked at me.
“She gave it to me.””
“And?””
“I hid it.””
“Why?””
“Because she asked me to wait.””
“Wait for what?””
He looked toward the road.
“For the moment when Lauren was ready to see the truth.””
Lauren started crying.
“I was never ready.””
Thomas looked at her sadly.
“No.””
His voice softened.
“But your mother believed you would be.””
A car suddenly slowed in front of the house.
All three of us turned.
A black sedan.
Thomas’s expression changed.
“They found me.””
My body tensed.
“Who?””
He didn’t answer.
The car continued down the street.
But the message was clear.
Someone was watching.
Someone knew.
Thomas stepped inside.
“I need to show you something.””
He reached into his coat and pulled out a small envelope.
Lauren looked at it.
“What is that?””
“Something Evelyn left behind.””
I took it.
My hands shook.
Because my wife had been gone for two years.
And yet somehow, she was still trying to protect me.
Inside was a letter.
Not long.
Not dramatic.
Just Evelyn’s handwriting.
My heart broke when I saw it.
I read the first line.
*“If you are reading this, then I was right to be worried.””*
I stopped.
Lauren covered her mouth.
I continued.
*“I hope I’m wrong. I hope Jason changed. I hope I worried for nothing.””*
My hands trembled.
Then I reached the final paragraph.
*“But if he ever hurts our family, please remember this: the person closest to the problem may not be the person who created it.””*
I looked up.
“What does that mean?””
Thomas looked at me.
“I don’t know.””
Lauren stared at the letter.
“Dad…”
“What?””
She pointed to the bottom.
There was one more line.
One sentence Evelyn had written.
A sentence hidden beneath her signature.
I read it.
And everything inside me froze.
*“The person who started this is someone you would never suspect.””*
At that exact moment, my phone rang.
Unknown number.
Again.
I answered.
A woman’s voice spoke.
Not Marilyn.
Not Rachel.
Someone else.
Someone I knew.
“Mr. Harrison…”
My blood went cold.
Because I recognized the voice immediately.
It was someone from my own family.
“Please don’t trust Lauren.””
I looked at my daughter.
May you like
And the voice continued:
“She’s the reason your money disappeared.””
