Chapter 2: The Man She Saved

The deputy stood on my porch holding a small folder.

Not a dramatic movie folder.

Not something full of secrets.

Just paperwork.

The kind of paperwork that suddenly changes the way you see someone.

Lauren took a step backward.

“Jason,” she whispered.

Jason stayed beside the truck.

He wasn’t looking at the deputy.

He was looking at me.

And there was something strange in his expression.

Not shame.

Not regret.

Fear.

“Mr. Harrison,” the deputy said, “I’m Deputy Collins. I need to ask you a few questions regarding a bail payment made yesterday.””

I nodded slowly.

“Okay.””

Lauren interrupted.

“Dad, don’t do this.””

I turned toward her.

“Do what?””

She lowered her voice.

“Make this bigger than it needs to be.””

I almost couldn’t believe it.

“My entire surgery fund disappeared, Lauren.””

She looked away.

“It’s not gone.””

“You gave it to someone else.””

“Someone I love.””

The deputy glanced between us.

Jason finally walked closer.

“Sir, I can explain.””

I looked at him.

The man my daughter had chosen over my health.

The man who had somehow convinced her that saving him was more important than saving her own father.

“Can you?””

Jason swallowed.

“It wasn’t supposed to happen this way.””

I felt something tighten in my chest.

“What does that mean?””

Lauren stepped between us.

“Dad, please. Just listen.””

I stared at her.

“You didn’t ask me.””

She didn’t respond.

“You didn’t call me.””

Silence.

“You didn’t tell me you were taking it.””

Her eyes dropped.

Because she knew.

She knew there was no excuse.

Deputy Collins opened his notebook.

“Mr. Harrison, we received information connected to the payment.””

Lauren suddenly became defensive.

“What information?””

The deputy looked at her.

“That’s what I’m trying to determine.””

Jason rubbed his jaw.

“Look, this is a misunderstanding.””

I looked at him.

“A misunderstanding is ordering the wrong food at a restaurant.””

My voice became colder.

“This was my medical care.””

Jason looked uncomfortable.

“Mr. Harrison, I was in a bad situation.””

“So was I.””

That sentence made everyone quiet.

The wind moved through the trees beside the driveway.

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Then Lauren stepped forward.

“Dad, you don’t understand.””

I stared at her.

“Then explain it.””

She took a deep breath.

“Jason made one mistake.””

“One?””

She flinched.

“He needed help.””

“And I needed surgery.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Why are you acting like I don’t care about you?””

I looked at her for a long moment.

Because that was the hardest part.

I believed she cared.

I believed she loved me.

But love without responsibility could still destroy someone.

“Lauren,” I said quietly, “the problem isn’t that you helped him.””

She looked confused.

“The problem is that you sacrificed me without even asking.””

She wiped her face.

“I knew you would say no.””

The honesty of that sentence hurt more than anything else.

The deputy looked up.

“You knew your father would not approve?””

Lauren froze.

“I mean…”

She stopped.

Too late.

Jason suddenly stepped forward.

“Lauren, don’t say anything else.””

I looked at him.

“Why?””

His expression changed.

For the first time, I saw something behind the confidence.

Panic.

Deputy Collins noticed too.

“Mr. Jason Reed?””

Jason looked at him.

“Yes?””

“I need you to answer some questions about yesterday’s bail transaction.””

Jason’s face tightened.

“I already paid everything.””

The deputy didn’t react.

“That’s not the issue.””

Lauren looked between them.

“What’s happening?””

Nobody answered.

The deputy turned to me.

“Mr. Harrison, did you authorize anyone to withdraw $38,500 from your account?””

“No.””

“Did you give permission for anyone to use that money?””

“No.””

Lauren whispered:

“Dad…”

I looked at her.

The person standing in front of me was my daughter.

But I suddenly realized I didn’t know what she was capable of anymore.

Deputy Collins closed his notebook.

“Then I need you to come with me and review a few details.””

Jason’s face lost all color.

Lauren grabbed his arm.

“Why?””

Jason pulled away.

“Lauren, just calm down.””

But she wasn’t looking at him anymore.

She was looking at me.

“Dad…”

Her voice cracked.

“What did you find out?””

Before I could answer, Deputy Collins looked at Jason and said:

“Mr. Reed, there’s something you should know.””

Jason stopped breathing.

The deputy continued.

“The bail payment wasn’t the only transaction connected to your name.””

Lauren’s hand slowly fell away from Jason’s arm.

May you like

And suddenly, I realized the $38,500 wasn’t the whole story.

It was only the beginning.
