Chapter 8: The Family Betrayal
The message disappeared three seconds later.
But those three seconds were enough.
Richard Whitmore.
My uncle.
My father’s brother.
The man who had vanished from our family years ago.
The man whose name was never spoken at family dinners.
I always thought he left because of a disagreement.
I never imagined he was still watching.
Still planning.
Still moving pieces around a board I didn’t even know existed.
Daniel closed the laptop.
“We need to leave.””
I looked at him.
“Why?””
“Because if Richard can access this system, this office is compromised.””
Adrian grabbed the documents.
“We take these.””
Daniel nodded.
“Yes.””
We moved quickly.
For once, nobody argued.
Nobody cared about pride.
Because this wasn’t about a marriage anymore.
This was about survival.
Outside the building, the city looked exactly the same.
Cars moved.
People walked.
Businesses operated.
Nobody knew there was a war happening beneath the surface.
Adrian stopped near the car.
“I need to tell you something.””
I looked at him.
“What?””
He hesitated.
“Victoria wasn’t the only woman.””
The words hit differently than I expected.
Not because they surprised me.
Because I was tired of surprises.
“What are you saying?””
He looked ashamed.
“Richard had been using people around me for years.””
I crossed my arms.
“That doesn’t excuse anything.””
“I know.””
He swallowed.
“But Victoria wasn’t just an affair.””
I waited.
“She was collecting information.””
The anger returned.
“You’re saying my husband’s mistress was spying on him?””
“Yes.””
I stared at him.
“And you knew?””
“No.””
His answer was immediate.
“I found out recently.””
“After you announced her as Vice President?””
His silence was enough.
I laughed quietly.
“You really did lose control of everything, didn’t you?””
He looked down.
“Yes.””
That honesty was almost harder to handle.
The Adrian I knew would never admit weakness.
But this man did.
Because his empire was collapsing.
Because he finally understood he wasn’t invincible.
We returned to the mansion.
But before we reached the front door, I noticed something.
The security gate was open.
I stopped.
“Did you leave it like this?””
Adrian looked at the gate.
“No.””
Daniel’s face changed.
“Someone has been inside.””
We rushed in.
The house looked untouched.
No broken windows.
No forced doors.
But something felt wrong.
My office door was open.
I ran upstairs.
The drawers were pulled out.
The files were scattered.
Someone had searched the room.
But they didn’t steal jewelry.
They didn’t take cash.
They were looking for information.
Daniel picked up a folder from the floor.
“This.””
I took it.
Inside were copies of my father’s original trust documents.
Except one page was missing.
The ownership transfer page.
My heart dropped.
“Someone took the proof.””
Adrian looked around the room.
“No.””
I turned.
“What?””
He pointed toward the desk.
“Look.””
A small envelope sat there.
Waiting.
My name was written on it.
Again.
I opened it carefully.
Inside was a photograph.
Not old this time.
New.
Taken recently.
The image showed me leaving the banquet last night.
But I wasn’t alone.
Adrian was behind me.
The photographer had been close.
Too close.
On the back of the photo were words.
*You never understood your place.*
I felt anger rise.
Not fear.
Anger.
Adrian read the message.
His face changed.
“Richard.””
Daniel looked at him.
“You’re sure?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Adrian pointed at the handwriting.
“Because he wrote the same thing twelve years ago.””
I looked at him.
“Twelve years ago?””
Adrian nodded slowly.
“The night before our wedding.””
My entire body went still.
“What did he write?””
Adrian looked at me.
A painful expression crossed his face.
“He told me I was marrying you for the wrong reasons.””
I stared.
“And what did you say?””
His voice became quiet.
“I told him I loved you.””
For a moment, nobody spoke.
Then Daniel’s phone rang.
He answered.
His face immediately changed.
“What happened?””
He listened.
Then looked at me.
“Eleanor…”
“What?””
He lowered the phone.
“The board meeting tomorrow has been canceled.””
I frowned.
“Why?””
Daniel swallowed.
“Because Richard already called one.””
My blood ran cold.
“When?””
Daniel looked at Adrian.
“Tonight.””
Adrian whispered:
“He’s not waiting for the morning.””
And suddenly we realized the truth.
May you like
Richard wasn’t trying to take the company.
He already had.
