Chapter 11: The Last Shareholder
The person who entered the room was someone I had never seen before.
A woman.
Late fifties.
Elegant.
Calm.
She carried herself like someone who had walked into powerful rooms her entire life.
Richard smiled.
“Everyone, this is Clara Bennett.””
The name meant nothing to me.
Until Adrian whispered:
“No…”
I turned toward him.
“You know her?””
His face was pale.
“She was my first investor.””
The room went quiet.
Clara looked at Adrian.
“Not your first investor.””
She corrected him.
“Your first partner.””
Adrian stared.
“What are you doing here?””
Clara placed the document on the table.
“Finishing what was started.””
Richard walked toward her.
“You’re late.””
She looked at him.
“No.””
Her voice was calm.
“You’re early.””
Richard’s expression darkened.
I studied both of them.
Another secret.
Another person who had been part of this story before I even knew it existed.
“Someone explain.””
Clara looked at me.
“You’re Eleanor Whitmore.””
I nodded.
“Yes.””
She smiled sadly.
“You look like your father.””
The words affected me more than I expected.
“My father knew you?””
“Yes.””
“How?””
Clara looked at Adrian.
“Because your father and I helped build the foundation of Vale International.””
Adrian looked confused.
“But Richard said—”
“Richard said many things.””
Clara interrupted.
“That was always his greatest talent.””
Richard stepped forward.
“You don’t belong in this meeting.””
Clara looked at him.
“Actually, I do.””
She tapped the document.
“Because I hold the original shareholder agreement.””
My heart stopped.
The missing piece.
The document Richard had spent years hiding.
Clara opened it.
“This agreement proves that the secondary trust was never meant to control the company permanently.””
Richard’s face hardened.
“Careful.””
Clara ignored him.
“It was temporary.””
She looked at the board.
“Created to protect the company during a transition period.””
I stared.
“So Richard never owned control?””
“No.””
Clara shook her head.
“He borrowed power.””
The room filled with whispers.
Richard’s carefully built image began cracking.
Adrian looked at me.
“I didn’t know.””
I believed him.
And that realization was strange.
After everything.
After the humiliation.
After the betrayal.
I finally understood something.
Adrian was guilty.
But he wasn’t the mastermind.
He was another person who had been manipulated by someone smarter and colder.
Richard walked toward Clara.
“You think one piece of paper changes everything?””
Clara smiled.
“No.””
She looked around the room.
“Evidence changes everything.””
She turned to the board.
“I have records showing unauthorized transfers, hidden accounts, and communications between Richard and Victoria Hart.””
A board member frowned.
“Victoria?””
Richard’s eyes narrowed.
Clara nodded.
“Yes.””
Suddenly, the conference room doors opened.
Everyone turned.
Victoria stood there.
But she wasn’t the confident woman from the banquet.
She looked frightened.
“I need to speak.””
Richard’s face became furious.
“You weren’t invited.””
Victoria ignored him.
She looked at me.
“I know you hate me.””
I said nothing.
She swallowed.
“But I need you to hear the truth.””
Adrian looked at her.
“Victoria.””
She looked ashamed.
“I lied to you.””
The room became silent.
“I thought Adrian was powerful.””
Her voice shook.
“I thought being beside him would change my life.””
She looked at Richard.
“But I didn’t know he was using me.””
Richard laughed.
“You’re blaming me?””
Victoria flinched.
“Yes.””
The word came out stronger than expected.
“You told me I would have everything.””
She looked at Adrian.
“You told me I would be protected.””
Then she looked at me.
“But you never told me I was just another piece on your board.””
Richard’s expression turned cold.
“You ungrateful girl.””
Victoria stepped back.
And that was when I understood.
Richard didn’t care about anyone.
Not his family.
Not Adrian.
Not Victoria.
Not even the company.
Only control.
Clara closed the folder.
“The final shareholder vote begins now.””
Richard smiled.
“You still don’t understand.””
I looked at him.
“What?””
He leaned forward.
“Even if you win this vote…”
His eyes moved toward Adrian.
“…you still have a problem.””
I followed his gaze.
Adrian looked confused.
Richard smiled.
“Because the person who betrayed Eleanor first…”
He pointed at Adrian.
“Wasn’t Victoria.””
The room froze.
Adrian’s face changed.
“What are you talking about?””
Richard’s smile widened.
“Tell her.””
Adrian said nothing.
And suddenly, I realized.
There was one more secret.
May you like
One more betrayal.
One more thing my husband had never told me.
