Chapter 4: The Name On The Document
The ballroom seemed to shrink around me.
Hundreds of people stood frozen, watching the woman they had laughed at moments earlier hold a document that could destroy the man they thought was untouchable.
I unfolded the paper.
My eyes moved across the page.
And then I saw the name.
*Victoria Hart.*
For a second, I wondered if I had misunderstood.
Then I read the sentence beneath it.
*Transfer of confidential company assets authorized by Adrian Vale and Victoria Hart.*
My fingers tightened around the document.
Not because I was surprised.
Because I was disappointed.
There was a difference.
I had expected Adrian to betray our marriage.
I had expected him to embarrass me.
But I had not expected him to betray the company that carried my family’s name.
Adrian watched my face carefully.
He knew something had changed.
“What is it?”” he asked.
His voice was quieter now.
Almost cautious.
I looked up.
“You tell me.””
His expression hardened.
“I have no idea what you’re talking about.””
I turned the paper around and placed it on the table.
“Confidential asset transfer agreements.””
Victoria stepped closer.
“What?””
I looked at her.
“Apparently, while you were preparing to become Vice President, you were also preparing to become the owner of certain private assets.””
Her face lost color.
“That’s a lie.””
Adrian immediately stepped between us.
“Eleanor, don’t do this.””
I stared at him.
“Don’t do what?””
“Create a scene.””
A small laugh escaped me.
The irony was almost painful.
“Adrian, you kissed another woman on stage in front of four hundred guests.””
His jaw tightened.
“And you’re worried about a scene?””
The people around us became silent again.
Nobody wanted to leave.
Not when the most powerful family in the city was falling apart in front of them.
Victoria grabbed the document.
Her hands trembled as she read.
“I didn’t sign this.””
I watched her carefully.
That answer came too quickly.
Not because she was innocent.
Because she was afraid.
Adrian noticed it too.
“Victoria.””
She looked at him.
“What?””
“Did you know about these transfers?””
Her eyes widened.
“You think I did this?””
“I asked you a question.””
The woman who had stood beside him on stage moments earlier suddenly looked alone.
“I thought you trusted me.””
Adrian laughed bitterly.
“That’s not an answer.””
I watched the two of them.
The perfect couple.
The beautiful replacement.
The future Vice President.
Now they were turning against each other.
It was almost too easy.
But I wasn’t doing this for revenge.
I was doing this because Adrian had forgotten one thing.
Power without accountability was dangerous.
My attorney, Daniel Whitmore, stepped beside me.
He adjusted his glasses and looked at Adrian.
“Mr. Vale, perhaps we should move this conversation somewhere private.””
Adrian looked at him.
“You work for her.””
Daniel smiled.
“Yes.””
“And you expect me to cooperate?””
“No.””
Daniel looked toward the ballroom doors.
“I expect you to understand the situation before the board meeting begins tomorrow morning.””
Adrian’s face changed.
“Tomorrow?””
“Yes.””
“The board meeting is tomorrow?””
Daniel nodded.
“The emergency session.””
The words hit him harder than I expected.
Because Adrian knew what an emergency board session meant.
It meant people were already preparing for his removal.
He looked at me.
“You planned everything.””
I shook my head.
“No.””
I stepped closer.
“You gave me the reason.””
His expression became colder.
“You’re enjoying this.””
I thought about that.
About the years I spent defending him.
The nights I stayed awake while he built his empire.
The times I turned down opportunities because I believed our marriage was a partnership.
“No,” I said.
“I’m mourning what I thought we had.””
For a moment, something flickered in his eyes.
Regret.
Maybe guilt.
But it disappeared quickly.
Because Adrian had spent too many years believing apologies were for people beneath him.
He turned away.
Then stopped.
“Eleanor.””
I looked at him.
“There’s something you don’t know.””
The room became quiet.
“What?””
He looked back at me.
And for the first time that night, he looked genuinely serious.
“Your father wasn’t the only person protecting those shares.””
My heart paused.
“What does that mean?””
Adrian said nothing.
He looked toward Daniel.
And Daniel’s expression told me he knew exactly what Adrian meant.
A cold feeling moved through me.
Because my father had always told me the trust was secure.
Untouchable.
But Adrian’s words suggested there was another player.
Someone behind the scenes.
Someone who had known about my ownership all along.
Adrian gave me one final look.
“You really think you were the only one keeping secrets?””
Then he walked away.

And for the first time that night…
I wondered if taking back my company would reveal a betrayal much bigger than my husband’s affair.
