Chapter 7: The Attorney Who Knew Too Much

I stared at the email until the words blurred.

Daniel Whitmore.

My attorney.

My father’s most trusted legal advisor.

The man who had stood beside me the night before and helped me remove Adrian from power.

The man who had always told me he was protecting my interests.

His name sat beside Adrian’s and Victoria’s.

A traitor hidden in plain sight.

“No,” I whispered.

Adrian watched me carefully.

“I knew you wouldn’t believe me.””

I looked up sharply.

“You knew?””

“I suspected.””

“That’s different.””

He nodded.

“Yes. It is.””

The anger inside me shifted.

For twelve years, I had seen Adrian as the villain of my story.

The arrogant husband.

The unfaithful CEO.

The man who used my love as a weakness.

But now there was a new question.

How much of Adrian’s betrayal was his own choice?

And how much of it was someone else pulling the strings?

I grabbed my phone.

I called Daniel.

He answered on the second ring.

“Eleanor.””

His voice sounded calm.

Too calm.

“Why is your name in an emergency investigation report?””

Silence.

A long silence.

Then:

“Where did you get that?””

I closed my eyes.

That was not a denial.

“Answer me.””

Daniel exhaled.

“I was hoping we could discuss this after I reviewed everything.””

“You reviewed everything?””

My voice sharpened.

“You mean after you helped create it?””

Adrian looked at me.

He could hear every word.

Daniel lowered his voice.

“Eleanor, you need to be careful.””

A bitter laugh escaped me.

“Careful?””

I walked toward the window.

“My husband publicly humiliated me in front of hundreds of people. My company may have been secretly drained. And now I find out my own attorney might be involved.””

“I am not your enemy.””

“Then prove it.””

Another silence.

Finally, Daniel said:

“Come to my office.””

“When?””

“Now.””

I ended the call.

Adrian stood.

“I’ll go with you.””

I looked at him.

The old instinct was to refuse.

To remind myself that this man had hurt me.

But something had changed.

For the first time in years, Adrian was not asking me to trust him blindly.

He was asking me to see the whole picture.

“Why do you care?”” I asked.

His expression softened.

“Because if Daniel is involved, he’s not just coming after you.””

He paused.

“He’s coming after everything your father built.””

An hour later, we entered Whitmore Legal Group.

The receptionist immediately stood.

“Mr. Vale.””

Then she looked at me.

“Mrs. Vale.””

Nobody knew what to call us anymore.

A divorced couple.

A married couple.

Enemies.

Partners.

Something in between.

Daniel’s office door was open.

He was standing behind his desk.

Waiting.

But the man I saw wasn’t the confident attorney from yesterday.

He looked exhausted.

Like someone who had been carrying a secret for years.

“Sit down,” he said.

I didn’t.

“Explain.””

Daniel looked at Adrian.

Then at me.

“Your uncle was the beginning.””

I frowned.

“What does that mean?””

“Richard Whitmore created a secondary holding structure years ago.””

My stomach tightened.

“A secret company?””

Daniel nodded.

“Not exactly.””

He opened a file.

Inside were documents.

Old ones.

Stamped.

Signed.

“This company controlled certain assets connected to Vale International.””

I flipped through the pages.

Then stopped.

A signature.

My father’s.

“What is this?””

Daniel looked away.

“The agreement that allowed Adrian to become CEO.””

I stared at him.

“You knew.””

“Yes.””

“You knew everything?””

“No.””

His answer was immediate.

“I knew pieces.””

“That’s not good enough.””

“I know.””

For the first time, Daniel looked ashamed.

“My mistake was believing I could control the situation.””

I placed the papers down.

“And Victoria?””

Daniel hesitated.

That hesitation answered everything.

“She was recruited.””

Adrian’s face hardened.

“By who?””

Daniel looked at him.

“Richard.””

The room went silent.

Adrian stepped forward.

“My uncle?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Daniel opened another folder.

“Because Richard believed Adrian was easier to control than you.””

I felt a chill.

“Me?””

Daniel nodded.

“Your father protected you because he knew you had the controlling shares. He also knew that if certain people gained influence over Adrian, they could eventually manipulate the company without ever owning it.””

I looked at Adrian.

“And he was right.””

Adrian looked away.

The guilt on his face was obvious.

But before I could say anything, Daniel’s computer screen suddenly turned black.

All three of us noticed.

A second later, a message appeared.

One sentence.

*Stop investigating, or the next person loses more than a company.*

My blood ran cold.

Adrian immediately moved closer.

“Who sent that?””

Daniel stared at the screen.

“I don’t know.””

I looked at him.

For the first time, I believed him.

Because Daniel looked terrified.

Then another message appeared.

May you like

A name.

*Richard Whitmore.*
