Chapter 3: The First Move

Adrian walked away from the crowd to answer the call.

For the first time in years, he looked like a man who didn’t know what to do.

I watched him disappear through the ballroom doors.

Victoria followed immediately.

Her confidence was gone.

“Adrian, what happened?””

I couldn’t hear his answer.

But I could see his body language.

The way his shoulders dropped.

The way he stopped pretending.

Margaret approached me instead.

“You planned this.””

I turned toward her.

“No.””

She narrowed her eyes.

“You expect me to believe that?””

“I expected Adrian to remember who stood beside him.””

The older woman laughed bitterly.

“You’re angry because another woman took your husband.””

I looked at the stage where Adrian had kissed Victoria.

“No.””

My voice was quiet.

“I’m angry because a man I loved decided humiliating me was easier than admitting he betrayed me.””

For a moment, Margaret had nothing to say.

Then she leaned closer.

“You think money makes you powerful?””

I looked at her diamond necklace.

The one she wore while watching her son destroy my reputation.

“No.””

I smiled slightly.

“Knowing the truth does.””

Across the room, reporters had started gathering.

The banquet organizers were panicking.

Nobody knew whether to continue the event or leave.

Then Adrian returned.

But the confident CEO who walked onto the stage earlier was gone.

His face was tense.

His eyes were cold.

“You called the board.””

It wasn’t a question.

I nodded.

“Yes.””

“You had no right.””

I almost laughed.

“No right?””

I reached into my purse and removed a small folder.

I had carried it with me for months.

Not because I planned tonight.

But because somewhere deep down, I knew Adrian’s choices would eventually force me to use it.

I placed it on the table between us.

“Open it.””

He stared at the folder.

“What is this?””

“Your reality.””

His hand moved slowly.

He opened it.

The first page was a shareholder agreement.

The second was a voting authority document.

The third was a legal notice.

His eyes moved faster.

Then slower.

Then stopped.

“You can’t do this.””

The old Adrian was returning.

The arrogant one.

The man who believed confidence could defeat facts.

“I already did.””

“No.””

He looked around.

Almost desperately.

“My company—”

I interrupted him.

“Your title.””

He froze.

“There’s a difference.””

Victoria finally reached us.

“What’s going on?””

Adrian didn’t answer.

She grabbed his arm.

“Adrian?””

He pulled away.

Not from me.

From her.

That small movement told me everything.

Victoria had fallen in love with the image.

The powerful CEO.

The wealthy businessman.

The man who promised her a future.

But now she was seeing the truth.

The empire had never belonged to him.

Not completely.

A notification appeared on Adrian’s phone.

He read it.

His face changed.

“What did you do?””

I looked at him.

“What?””

He held up the phone.

“The vehicles. The company accounts. The executive access.””

His voice cracked.

“You froze everything.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

I stepped closer.

“I protected what my family owns.””

His eyes filled with anger.

“You’re destroying me.””

I stared at the man who had destroyed me publicly less than an hour earlier.

“No, Adrian.””

I whispered.

“You did that yourself.””

The ballroom doors opened suddenly.

A man in a dark suit walked inside carrying a sealed envelope.

He approached me.

“Mrs. Vale.””

Everyone turned.

He handed me the envelope.

Adrian looked at it.

“What is that?””

I opened it slowly.

Then I looked at him.

Because this wasn’t just about removing him as CEO.

This was about the secret he had hidden from me for years.

I unfolded the document.

And read the name written at the bottom.

A name I never expected to see.

Adrian’s name was not the only surprise waiting inside.

May you like

Because the person who had helped him betray me…

was someone standing in that room.
