Chapter 6: The Man Behind The Crown
The elevator stopped at the executive floor.
Neither of us moved.
The doors opened.
Employees outside immediately looked away.
They knew.
Everyone knew.
The news had already spread.
The CEO’s wife.
The hidden majority shareholder.
The woman who could remove the man who built the company’s public image.
Adrian stepped out first.
“Conference room.””
I followed.
The room where he had made million-dollar decisions.
The room where employees feared making mistakes.
The room where he sat at the head of the table and acted like an emperor.
Today, he wasn’t sitting there.
He was standing.
Waiting.
“I know what you found,” he said.
I placed the photograph on the table.
“Then explain this.””
His face changed.
Only slightly.
But enough.
“Where did you get that?””
“That’s my question.””
He looked at the picture.
“Your uncle gave this to you?””
“So you do know.””
Adrian rubbed his forehead.
For once, he looked tired.
Not powerful.
Not untouchable.
Just tired.
“Eleanor, there are things your father never told you.””
I crossed my arms.
“Everyone keeps saying that.””
“Because it’s true.””
I stared at him.
“Then tell me.””
He looked toward the window.
The city stretched beneath us.
The empire he had built.
Or thought he built.
“When I was twenty-six, Vale International was not what people think.””
I stayed silent.
“I had an idea. A small one. A company that could compete with larger firms.””
He looked at the photograph.
“Your uncle found me.””
I frowned.
“Why?””
“Because he believed in the idea.””
My fingers tightened.
“He invested?””
Adrian nodded.
“But not with his money.””
A cold feeling moved through me.
“Whose money?””
He looked at me.
“Your family’s.””
The answer hit harder than I expected.
“No.””
“Yes.””
“You’re lying.””
“I wish I was.””
He walked toward the table.
“Your uncle created the first investment agreement. Your father approved it.””
I shook my head.
“My father would have told me.””
“He wanted to.””
Adrian looked away.
“But then he found out something.””
“What?””
Adrian’s expression became darker.
“That your uncle wasn’t investing to help me.””
The room became silent.
“He was investing because he wanted control.””
I looked at the photograph.
Richard Whitmore.
My own family.
“Why didn’t anyone stop him?””
Adrian laughed quietly.
“Because by the time they realized what was happening, Vale International was already too valuable.””
I studied him.
“And you?””
His eyes met mine.
“What about me?””
“You stayed.””
A painful silence followed.
Because that was the truth.
Whatever happened before…
Adrian still made choices.
He still betrayed me.
He still humiliated me.
“You could have told me.””
“Yes.””
His answer was immediate.
No excuses.
No defense.
“Yes, I could have.””
That honesty surprised me.
“I was afraid.””
I almost laughed.
“Afraid?””
He nodded.
“I knew if I told you everything, you would see me differently.””
I looked at him.
“I see you differently now.””
He accepted that.
Then his phone rang.
He looked at the screen.
His expression changed.
“What?””
I watched his face.
“Who is it?””
He didn’t answer.
He just handed me the phone.
An email was open.
From the board.
The subject line:
*Emergency Investigation: Unauthorized Transfer of Company Assets*
Below it was a list of names.
Adrian Vale.
Victoria Hart.
And one more.
My hands went cold.
Because the third name belonged to someone I never expected.
Someone who had been helping me all along.
Someone sitting in my attorney’s office.
Daniel Whitmore.
I looked at Adrian.
He whispered:
May you like
“Now you know why I was trying to warn you.””
And suddenly, I wasn’t sure who I was fighting anymore.
