Chapter 14: The Fall Of A King
Richard slowly placed his phone on the table.
Everyone noticed.
“What happened?”” Adrian asked.
Richard looked at him.
“You really thought this was the end?””
I felt the victory disappear.
Not because of fear.
Because I knew that expression.
He had another move.
Daniel stepped closer.
“What did you do?””
Richard smiled.
“Nothing.””
He looked at me.
“Someone else did.””
The conference room doors opened.
A group of investigators entered.
Everyone stood.
One of them approached me.
“Mrs. Whitmore?””
“Yes?””
“We need to speak with you regarding company financial records.””
My heart tightened.
Richard looked satisfied.
Adrian stepped forward.
“What is this?””
The investigator showed his identification.
“There are allegations of financial misconduct involving Vale International.””
Everyone looked toward Richard.
But he shook his head.
“Not me.””
He looked at Adrian.
“Your CEO.””
The room froze.
Adrian’s face changed.
“What?””
The investigator continued.
“We have evidence of unauthorized transfers made during your time as CEO.””
“That’s impossible.””
Richard smiled.
“Is it?””
I looked at him.
“You planned this.””
Richard looked at me.
“I prepared for every outcome.””
Adrian looked furious.
“You’re framing me.””
Richard shrugged.
“You were always the easiest person to blame.””
The investigator turned toward Adrian.
“We need you to answer some questions.””
Adrian looked at me.
And I saw something I never expected.
Fear.
Not for himself.
For me.
“Eleanor.””
I looked at him.
“Listen to me.””
The room waited.
“I didn’t do this.””
I believed him.
And that realization shocked me.
After everything.
I believed him.
Because I finally understood something.
Trust wasn’t about forgetting betrayal.
It was about seeing the entire truth.
And the truth was complicated.
Richard had spent years building a world where everyone blamed each other.
He needed Adrian and me divided.
Angry.
Distrustful.
Because united people were harder to control.
I stepped forward.
“Wait.””
The investigator looked at me.
“Yes?””
I pointed toward Richard.
“The financial transfers.””
Richard’s expression changed slightly.
“What about them?””
I smiled.
“They weren’t made by Adrian.””
The room became silent.
The investigator looked at me.
“How do you know?””
“Because Adrian never had authority over those accounts.””
Richard’s smile disappeared.
I continued.
“The accounts required approval from the secondary trust.””
Daniel immediately understood.
“Yes.””
He opened his laptop.
“The transfer signatures were routed through Richard Whitmore’s authorization system.””
Richard’s face went cold.
“That’s impossible.””
Daniel looked at him.
“No.””
He turned the screen around.
“It’s documented.””
The investigator stepped toward Richard.
For the first time, Richard looked trapped.
Not powerful.
Not untouchable.
Trapped.
Adrian stared at me.
“You protected me.””
I looked at him.
“I protected the truth.””
He nodded slowly.
Because he understood.
This wasn’t forgiveness.
Not yet.
Maybe not ever.
But it was fairness.
Richard was escorted away for questioning.
As he passed me, he stopped.
“You think you won.””
I looked at him.
“I did.””
He smiled faintly.
“You won the company.””
He leaned closer.
“But you haven’t decided what to do with the man who broke your heart.””
His eyes moved toward Adrian.
Then he walked away.
The room emptied slowly.
Leaving only me and Adrian.
The silence between us was heavier than any argument.
Finally, he spoke.
“I’m sorry.””
Two words.
Simple.
Too late.
But real.
I looked at the man I had loved for twelve years.
The man who hurt me.
The man who had been hurt too.
“I don’t know if I can forgive you.””
He nodded.
“I know.””
“But I know something else.””
He looked at me.
“What?””
I looked around the company my father built.
“Our story doesn’t end because someone tried to destroy it.””
Adrian lowered his eyes.
“And ours?””
I didn’t answer.
Because some things couldn’t be decided in one night.
Some wounds needed time.
Then my phone rang.
I answered.
It was Daniel.
“Eleanor.””
His voice sounded serious.
“What?””
“There’s one more document.””
I closed my eyes.
“Another secret?””
“Yes.””
I sighed.
“What now?””
A pause.
Then Daniel said:
“It’s from your mother.””
My heart stopped.
Because my mother had been gone for fifteen years.
May you like
And whatever she left behind…
was something my father never wanted me to find.
