Chapter 7: The Passenger Nobody Mentioned

For the next thirty seconds, I couldn't move.

My brother had just admitted he was inside the car when Emily died.

For three years, I'd imagined my wife alone on a rain-soaked highway, fighting to survive while strangers tried to reach her.

Now I was discovering that James had been there.

And he'd never told me.

"Daniel," I said quietly, "I need you to find out exactly what happened at that hospital.""

He was already typing.

"Give me the document.""

I handed him my phone.

He studied the scanned admission record, zooming in on the signature and the timestamp.

"There's something strange here.""

"What?""

"The document says James arrived as a passenger at 8:16 P.M. But the accident report says emergency services were dispatched at 8:52.""

I frowned.

"That's impossible.""

"Unless the document was created later, or the timeline in the official report is wrong.""

I called Rebecca.

She answered immediately.

"Michael?""

"James was in the car with Emily.""

Silence.

Then she whispered, "I was afraid of that.""

"You knew?""

"Emily told me she was meeting someone the morning of the accident. She didn't tell me who. But she sounded terrified.""

"Why didn't you tell me?""

"Because she asked me to wait until I had proof. I didn't want to accuse your brother without evidence.""

I looked at the hospital record again.

"Can you find out whether there were other passengers?""

"I'll try.""

I ended the call and looked toward the staircase.

Lily was asleep upstairs.

I'd told her that everything would be okay.

But I was beginning to understand how little I knew about the people who had been around her mother.

Daniel placed the document on the table.

"There's another possibility. If James was treated at the hospital that night, there should be a medical record.""

"Can we get it?""

"Not without the proper legal process. But I know an investigator who can help establish the timeline.""

He made a call.

While he spoke, I walked into the living room and looked at Emily's photograph on the mantel.

She was smiling.

Her hair was blowing across her face, and her hand rested on my shoulder.

I remembered that afternoon.

She had been unusually affectionate. She'd kissed me twice before leaving and told me she loved me.

I'd thought she was simply having a good day.

Now I wondered whether she'd been saying goodbye.

My phone vibrated.

A message from James.

*We need to meet. Alone. Tomorrow morning. I have something that will change everything.*

I stared at it.

Then another message appeared.

*Don't bring Daniel. And don't tell Rebecca.*

I didn't respond.

Instead, I took a screenshot and sent it to Daniel.

He read it.

"Absolutely not.""

"I need to know what he knows.""

"Then we'll arrange a controlled meeting. You won't go alone.""

I nodded.

At that moment, Lily appeared at the top of the staircase, holding her stuffed rabbit.

"Daddy?""

I immediately put my phone away.

"Hey, princess. Why aren't you sleeping?""

She walked down slowly.

"Can I ask you something?""

"Anything.""

"Did Mommy die because Uncle James was bad?""

I knelt in front of her.

I wanted to give her an easy answer.

I wanted to tell her that everything had been an accident and that nobody had done anything wrong.

But I couldn't make promises I couldn't keep.

"I don't know exactly what happened yet, sweetheart. But I'm going to find out.""

She looked at the photograph on the mantel.

"Mommy told me Uncle James made her sad.""

I gently took her hand.

"Did she tell you anything else?""

Lily nodded.

"She said if Daddy ever found the silver key, he would know where the truth was.""

I froze.

"What silver key?""

Lily pointed toward the hallway.

"The one Mommy put in the teddy bear.""

I stared at her.

"What teddy bear?""

"The big brown one in the attic.""

Emily's old teddy bear.

I'd kept it after she died, along with a few boxes of her belongings.

I hadn't opened those boxes in years.

Daniel looked up from his phone.

"Michael?""

I stood.

"Get a flashlight.""

We went into the attic together.

The air smelled of dust and old cardboard. I moved several boxes until I found the brown teddy bear.

Its left paw had a small tear.

I carefully examined the stitching.

Something metallic pressed against the fabric.

I opened the seam.

A tiny silver key fell into my palm.

Attached to it was a folded piece of paper.

Emily's handwriting covered the front.

*Storage Unit 317. Do not trust James.*

Daniel read it twice.

Then he looked at me.

"Michael, I think your wife left us something.""

But before we could leave the attic, my phone rang.

An unknown woman was calling.

I answered.

"Hello?""

A trembling voice whispered:

"Mr. Carter, my name is Sarah Miller. My father was Thomas Miller.""

I stopped breathing.

"Your father was the mechanic?""

"Yes.""

"Do you know what happened to him?""

She began crying.

"Yes. And I think I know who made him disappear.""

May you like

Then she said the name.

"James Carter.""
