Chapter 1: Fifteen Minutes Before Forever

Fifteen minutes before I was supposed to marry the woman I loved, I found her with one hand tangled in my five-year-old daughter's hair and the other raised to strike her again.

What happened next destroyed more than my wedding.

It exposed a secret my dead wife had taken to her grave—and a betrayal coming from the one person I had trusted since childhood.

My name is Michael Carter. I was thirty-six years old, a father, and the owner of a successful construction company in Atlanta, Georgia.

That Saturday was supposed to be the happiest day of my life.

The wedding was being held at a beautiful estate outside the city. White roses covered the entrance. A string quartet played beneath the oak trees. Nearly two hundred guests had gathered to celebrate my marriage to Vanessa Reed.

I'd spent almost two years building a life with her.

After my first wife, Emily, died in a car accident, I'd spent three years raising our daughter, Lily, alone.

Lily had been two when her mother died.

She barely remembered Emily's voice, but she still slept with the small stuffed rabbit Emily had given her.

I had promised myself that I would never allow anyone to make my daughter feel unwanted.

Vanessa had seemed like the answer to every prayer.

She helped Lily with her coloring books. She bought her dresses. She kissed her forehead before bedtime.

At least, that's what I thought.

"Are you nervous, big brother?"" James asked that morning.

My older brother stood beside me in the groom's suite, adjusting his navy-blue tie.

James was forty-one. He'd helped me build my company from a small construction business into a multimillion-dollar operation. When our parents died, he became the closest thing I had to a second father.

"More nervous than when I signed my first million-dollar contract," I joked.

James laughed.

"Vanessa is a good woman. She'll make a wonderful mother to Lily.""

I smiled.

"That's what I hope.""

He patted my shoulder.

"Just make sure you sign everything Vanessa gives you today. Marriage is about trust, brother.""

I didn't think much of it.

At the time, I didn't know he was talking about documents that could cost me everything.

By two-thirty, guests were taking their seats.

The ceremony was scheduled for three.

Lily was supposed to be my flower girl. She wore a beautiful ivory dress with a pink ribbon around her waist. Her hair was curled, and a tiny silver bracelet rested on her wrist.

But when I went looking for her, she was gone.

"Have you seen Lily?"" I asked the wedding coordinator.

"She was with Vanessa about ten minutes ago.""

I frowned.

"Where?""

"Near the bridal dressing room, I think.""

I hurried down the hallway.

Then I heard a small voice.

"Please, Vanessa. I won't tell Daddy.""

I stopped.

My daughter's voice was trembling.

I pushed the dressing room door open.

Vanessa stood in front of Lily, gripping her hair so tightly that my little girl was leaning backward.

Then Vanessa slapped her.

The sound cracked through the room.

"Starting today, you WILL call me Mommy!"" Vanessa snapped.

I saw Lily's tiny hand rise to her cheek.

Something inside me broke.

"GET YOUR HANDS OFF MY DAUGHTER!""

Vanessa spun around.

"Michael!""

I rushed forward, pulled Lily into my arms, and instinctively struck Vanessa across the face in anger.

She stumbled against the makeup table, knocking a perfume bottle onto the floor.

"YOU HIT ME?"" she screamed.

"ON OUR WEDDING DAY?""

"You hit a five-year-old child!""

"She was being disrespectful!""

"She's five years old!""

Vanessa pointed at Lily.

"She refuses to accept me as her mother. I've tried everything!""

Lily buried her face in my shoulder.

"Daddy, I'm sorry.""

I immediately held her tighter.

"Don't you ever apologize for someone hurting you, sweetheart.""

"But Vanessa said you would stop loving me if I told you.""

My blood ran cold.

I looked at Vanessa.

"What did you just tell my daughter?""

Vanessa folded her arms.

"She's twisting my words.""

I took Lily's little hand.

"The wedding is over.""

Vanessa's expression changed instantly.

"Michael, don't be ridiculous. There are two hundred guests outside!""

"Then they'll have a good story to tell.""

She grabbed my sleeve.

"You're throwing away two years because of one misunderstanding?""

I looked at the red mark on Lily's cheek.

"That wasn't a misunderstanding.""

Then Lily slowly lifted her head.

She pointed toward Vanessa's expensive designer purse.

"Daddy, there's something you need to see.""

Vanessa went completely still.

"What is it, baby?"" I asked.

Lily whispered, "She has another phone.""

Vanessa stepped forward.

"Michael, she's confused.""

But Lily shook her head.

"I heard her talking to a man when you were at work.""

I stared at Vanessa.

"What man?""

My daughter swallowed.

"She said he wouldn't have to hide after the wedding.""

Before Vanessa could answer, a phone began ringing inside her purse.

I reached for it.

The screen lit up.

JAMES CARTER.

My brother.

And beneath his name was a message preview.

"Did you get him to sign the papers? Once he does, the house and Lily's trust fund are ours.""

I felt the room tilt.

Vanessa reached for the phone.

"Michael, please. Don't answer that.""

I pulled it away.

"Why is my brother calling your secret phone?""

She opened her mouth.

But before she could speak, someone appeared in the doorway.

James.

Still wearing the navy-blue suit I'd bought him.

He looked at the phone in my hand.

Then at Vanessa.

His face turned pale.

"Michael," he said quietly.

"Whatever she told you, don't believe her.""

I stared at him.

Then Lily whispered something that made my heart stop.

"Daddy, Uncle James came to our house yesterday.""

I knelt beside her.

"What happened, sweetheart?""

She pointed at Vanessa.

"They were looking for Mommy's old papers.""

I looked back at my brother.

Lily's next words came out in a frightened whisper.

"Uncle James said you still don't know why Mommy really died.""
