Chapter 14: The Truth About Lily's Father
The old Carter Construction warehouse stood at the edge of Atlanta's industrial district.
We had sold it years ago, but James had apparently retained access to the building.
Police surrounded the area before I arrived.
Daniel sat beside me in the vehicle.
"Remember the plan. You enter through the front office. The tactical team monitors the building. We have officers positioned at every exit.""
I nodded.
My hands were shaking.
Not from fear for myself.
From the thought of Lily sitting alone with the man who had destroyed her mother's life.
My phone rang.
Patricia.
I answered.
"Where are you?""
"I'm at the police station. Michael, I have the original laboratory report.""
"Is Lily my daughter?""
"Yes.""
I closed my eyes.
"Thank God.""
Patricia continued.
"Emily had the test repeated privately after James started questioning the records. The results confirmed that you are Lily's biological father.""
I looked at Daniel.
He nodded reassuringly.
"But there's something else," Patricia said.
"James knew the first test was inconclusive. He deliberately used that uncertainty to convince Vanessa that he could challenge your parental rights.""
I felt anger rising again.
"He was going to take my daughter.""
"Yes. He wanted you to believe Lily might not be yours. He thought that fear would make you sign the guardianship documents.""
"Why would he include himself in the original test?""
Patricia hesitated.
"Because he was trying to make the possibility seem real. He knew Emily would never agree to the arrangement if she understood what he was doing.""
I gripped the phone.
"Did Emily know about his plan?""
"She discovered it shortly before the accident.""
I looked toward the warehouse.
"Then why didn't she tell me?""
"She tried. But James convinced her that you had already seen the forged documents. He made her believe you were involved.""
My stomach tightened.
"What?""
"He told her you had signed financial authorizations and agreed to transfer control of the trust. She was terrified that you had been manipulated.""
I remembered the last few months of Emily's life.
The strange silences.
The arguments.
The way she'd sometimes look at me as though she wanted to say something but couldn't find the words.
James had been standing between us.
All along.
Daniel touched my shoulder.
"We're ready.""
I ended the call.
"Patricia says the DNA results confirm I'm Lily's father.""
Daniel smiled briefly.
"That's one piece of good news.""
Then he opened the car door.
I walked toward the warehouse entrance.
The door was unlocked.
Inside, the building smelled of oil, dust, and old wood.
I remembered the place.
James and I had spent countless nights working there. We'd eaten pizza on the floor, celebrated our first major contract, and promised our parents' photographs that we'd build something extraordinary.
Now it felt like a crime scene.
"James!""
My voice echoed through the building.
A light came on in the old office.
He stepped into view.
Lily was sitting in a chair behind him.
"DADDY!""
I started forward.
James raised one hand.
"Stop.""
I froze.
"Let her go.""
He looked at the folder in my hand.
"Did you bring everything?""
"First, let me see my daughter.""
James stepped aside.
Lily was unharmed, but her cheeks were wet.
"Daddy, I want to go home.""
I swallowed hard.
"I know, sweetheart. I'm right here.""
James smiled bitterly.
"Always the hero, Michael.""
I looked at him.
"You had everything. A successful company. A family. A brother who trusted you.""
He laughed.
"Everything? You got everything. You got the house, the business, the money, and the woman I loved.""
I stared at him.
"What are you talking about?""
James looked toward Lily.
"Emily should have been mine.""
I felt my blood run cold.
"She was never yours.""
"She chose you.""
"Because she loved me.""
James slammed his fist against the desk.
"She chose you because you were the younger brother who needed saving! I built that company. I protected you.
And what did I get? A seat at your wedding while everyone congratulated you for another perfect life!""
I shook my head.
"You weren't protecting me. You were stealing from me.""
He pointed at the folder.
"Give it to me.""
"No.""
His face darkened.
"Then perhaps you should hear the rest of the story.""
He opened a drawer and removed a photograph.
It showed Emily sitting in a car with James.
The date was written on the back.
Three days before the accident.
"Emily came to me because she wanted to negotiate," he said.
"She knew I'd been moving money. She threatened to expose everything unless I stopped.""
I stared at the photograph.
"What happened that night?""
James looked away.
"I was driving her to meet someone. She had the documents with her. We argued. She tried to get out of the car.""
"Did you tamper with the brakes?""
He didn't answer.
"James!""
He shouted back.
"I paid Thomas to disable the tracking system! I didn't tell him to destroy the brakes!""
The admission echoed through the warehouse.
A faint electronic sound came from somewhere behind me.
The police were recording everything.
James continued.
"Emily discovered what I'd done. She said she'd report me. I panicked. I grabbed the steering wheel when she tried to turn the car around.""
My entire body went cold.
"You're saying you caused the crash?""
He looked at me.
"It was an accident.""
"You left her to die!""
"I didn't leave her!""
"Then why did you sign that hospital document?""
James's eyes filled with tears.
"Because she was still threatening me. Even in the hospital, she kept asking for you. She wanted to tell you everything.""
I stepped closer.
"She was your sister-in-law. She trusted you.""
He looked toward the ceiling.
"I know.""
For the first time, he seemed genuinely broken.
But then he reached into his jacket.
I stopped breathing.
"James, don't.""
He pulled out a folded document.
It was the original laboratory report.
"Do you know what Emily said when she discovered the DNA results?"" he asked.
I shook my head.
"She said Lily was yours, and that I would never be allowed near her again.""
He looked at Lily.
"She took everything from me.""
I stepped between them.
"She protected her child.""
James's expression hardened.
"Give me the folder, Michael.""
I slowly placed it on the desk.
He reached for it.
Then Lily spoke.
"Uncle James?""
He turned.
"Yes?""
"Mommy said you used to be a good man.""
His face changed.
Lily continued.
"She said you were just making bad choices.""
James stared at her.
For a moment, the anger disappeared.
Then he looked at me.
"Do you know what the worst part is?""
"What?""
"I almost got away with it.""
A metallic crash sounded behind the office.
Police officers rushed into the room.
"JAMES CARTER! HANDS WHERE WE CAN SEE THEM!""
James dropped the document.
Officers restrained him immediately.
I ran to Lily.
She threw her arms around my neck.
"Daddy!""
I held her so tightly that she laughed through her tears.
But as the officers led James away, he turned toward me.
"Michael!""
I looked up.
He smiled sadly.
"You still haven't found the person who paid me.""
I froze.
"What?""
James leaned toward the officer.
May you like
Then he said something that changed everything.
"I wasn't the one who started this.""
