Chapter 4: The Photograph That Changed Everything
I stared at the photograph until the screen began to blur.
Emily stood in our old kitchen, wearing the yellow sweater I'd bought her for her birthday. Lily was sitting on the counter, laughing with a spoonful of pancake batter on her nose.
It looked like an ordinary family morning.
Except for the timestamp.
7:42 A.M.
The morning Emily died.
And beneath the photograph were six words that made my stomach twist.
*Ask your brother who was driving.*
I looked up.
James was standing beside the security officer, pretending to check his watch.
"James.""
He didn't turn.
"James Carter!""
He slowly faced me.
I held up my phone.
"Who was driving?""
His expression changed.
Only for a second.
But I'd known my brother for thirty-six years. I knew every expression on his face, including the ones he used when he was lying.
"What are you talking about?"" he asked.
I showed him the photograph.
His jaw tightened.
"Where did you get that?""
"Someone just sent it to me.""
"Delete it.""
I almost laughed.
"That's your response?""
"Michael, you don't understand what you're getting involved in.""
"Then explain it.""
He looked at Daniel.
"Can we have a private conversation?""
Daniel stepped between us.
"No. Not after what's happened. Anything you want to say can be said in front of everyone.""
James shook his head.
"You're making a mistake, Michael.""
I walked toward him.
"Was Emily in your car that morning?""
His face went pale.
Vanessa suddenly stood.
"James, tell him the truth.""
He spun around.
"YOU STAY OUT OF THIS!""
She flinched.
Lily grabbed my hand.
"Daddy, why is Uncle James angry?""
I crouched beside her.
"He's upset, sweetheart. But you're safe.""
Daniel placed a hand on my shoulder.
"Michael, we should leave. I'll arrange for the evidence to be secured.""
Before I could answer, James spoke.
"Fine. I'll tell you.""
Everyone turned.
He took a deep breath.
"I wasn't driving the car that killed Emily.""
My heart pounded.
"But you were with her?""
He hesitated.
"Yes.""
The room seemed to shrink.
"Why?""
"She called me that morning. She wanted to meet.""
"What about?""
"Company records. She believed someone was stealing money.""
I remembered Vanessa's earlier confession.
"Did she have proof?""
James nodded reluctantly.
"She had bank statements and copies of transactions. She said she was going to give everything to you.""
"And you stopped her?""
"No!""
His voice cracked.
"I tried to convince her to wait. I told her we could investigate quietly.""
"Why would she need to investigate quietly?""
James looked at the floor.
Then he said something that made my blood run cold.
"Because the money was coming from your company's accounts, Michael.""
I stared at him.
"Whose money?""
"Yours.""
"Whose transactions?""
He didn't answer.
Daniel immediately took out his notebook.
"Mr. Carter, I suggest you stop discussing this until legal counsel is present.""
James ignored him.
"Emily was convinced I was involved. She accused me of moving money through shell companies.""
"Were you?""
He looked directly at me.
"I made mistakes. But I didn't kill her.""
I wanted to believe him.
I really did.
This was the man who had taught me how to ride a bicycle. The man who sat beside me at our parents' funerals. The man who helped me carry Emily's coffin.
But then I remembered the message.
Ask your brother who was driving.
"Who sent me that photograph?"" I asked.
James shook his head.
"I don't know.""
My phone buzzed again.
Another message.
*Your brother is telling half the truth. Check the police report against the original hospital records.*
I showed Daniel.
He studied the screen.
"Do you have a copy of Emily's accident report?""
"At home, probably.""
"Then we'll get it.""
James suddenly laughed bitterly.
"You're wasting your time. The report is accurate.""
"Then you won't mind us checking.""
He didn't respond.
Vanessa stepped forward.
"Michael, there's something else you should know.""
I turned toward her.
"What now?""
She looked at James.
Then back at me.
"Your brother didn't just arrange for me to meet you.""
I felt my stomach tighten.
"What does that mean?""
"He showed me photographs of your house, your daughter, and your daily schedule before I ever met you.""
I stared at her.
"Why?""
Her eyes filled with tears.
"Because he wanted me to get close enough to make you trust me.""
James lunged toward her.
"Shut your mouth!""
Security grabbed his arms.
Vanessa screamed.
"YOU SAID HE'D NEVER FIND OUT!""
James struggled against the officers.
May you like
And for the first time, I realized something even worse than the possibility that my brother had lied about Emily's death.
He might have planned my second marriage before I even knew Vanessa existed.
