Chapter 12: The Doctor's Last Confession
Dr. Mercer agreed to meet us in a private room at the police station.
Daniel arranged for an investigator to be present.
I arrived with a folder containing Emily's letters, the hospital records, and the recording Patricia had preserved.
The doctor was already waiting.
He looked older than his photograph from the hospital website. His hands trembled as he poured water into a paper cup.
"Mr. Carter," he said, "I want you to know that I have regretted that night for three years.""
I sat across from him.
"Then tell me what happened.""
He looked at Daniel.
"Is this conversation being recorded?""
"Yes," the investigator answered.
"With your consent.""
Dr. Mercer nodded.
"Fine.""
He folded his hands.
"When your wife was brought into the emergency department, she was conscious but seriously injured. She had suffered internal trauma and needed immediate transfer to a specialized facility.""
I leaned forward.
"Was she going to survive?""
"At that point, we believed she had a reasonable chance.""
My chest tightened.
"Then why didn't you transfer her?""
The doctor closed his eyes.
"Because James Carter told me you had authorized him to make medical decisions.""
"I never did.""
"I know that now.""
He reached into his briefcase and removed a copy of the authorization form.
"I questioned the signature. But James insisted it was genuine.""
"What did he threaten you with?""
The doctor looked down.
"He told me he had enough influence with the hospital board to end my career. He also said your family would sue the hospital if I transferred her against his instructions.""
I stared at him.
"So you listened to him?""
His face reddened.
"Yes.""
The honesty didn't make it easier.
"Did Emily ask for me?""
"Repeatedly.""
I gripped the table.
"What did she say?""
The doctor opened a medical note.
"She asked for her husband and said she needed to tell him something about a vehicle inspection.""
My throat tightened.
"Did she mention James?""
Dr. Mercer nodded.
"She said someone had tampered with her car.""
The room went silent.
I asked the question I'd been afraid to ask.
"Did she die because you didn't transfer her?""
The doctor took a long breath.
"I cannot make that conclusion without a complete medical review. But the delay reduced her chances.""
I looked away.
Three years of grief suddenly felt like three years of unanswered questions.
"Why did you agree to meet me now?""
Dr. Mercer rubbed his forehead.
"Because James came to my house yesterday.""
"What did he want?""
"He wanted the original admission notes.""
"Did you give them to him?""
"No. I told him they had been destroyed.""
"Why lie?""
The doctor looked directly at me.
"Because he told me something that made me realize he was still dangerous.""
"What?""
"He said you had found Emily's documents and that your daughter might soon become a problem.""
I stood.
"What did he mean?""
Dr. Mercer shook his head.
"I don't know. But he also said something else.""
I leaned toward him.
"What?""
"He said, 'If Michael learns what happened in that delivery room, he'll never forgive me.''"
I felt the blood drain from my face.
The delivery room.
Patricia's warning returned to my mind.
Ask Michael why he wasn't allowed into the delivery room.
I sat down slowly.
"Tell me about Lily's birth.""
Dr. Mercer looked uncomfortable.
"I wasn't the physician who delivered her. But I reviewed the original records afterward.""
"Why?""
"Because there was an unusual amendment.""
"What amendment?""
He removed another document.
It was a neonatal admission record dated five years earlier.
The emergency contact section had originally listed me.
Someone had crossed out my name and written James Carter.
I stared at it.
"Why would my brother be listed as the emergency contact?""
Dr. Mercer answered carefully.
"According to the hospital's internal notes, your wife requested that he be contacted because you were unavailable.""
I shook my head.
"That's not true. I was at the hospital.""
He nodded.
"There's another issue. A document was submitted requesting restricted access to the newborn's medical information.""
"Who submitted it?""
He turned the page.
James Carter.
My brother had requested restricted access to my daughter's medical records.
I couldn't understand why.
Then Dr. Mercer opened the final page.
It was a note from a pediatric specialist.
*Newborn genetic screening and parentage verification requested.*
I stared at the words.
"Was a DNA test performed?""
The doctor nodded.
"According to the record, yes.""
"Whose DNA?""
"Yours and the child's.""
My heartbeat became deafening.
"What were the results?""
He looked toward the investigator.
Then back at me.
"The original results were never attached to the medical file. There is only a handwritten note stating that the matter was resolved privately.""
"By whom?""
He turned the document around.
At the bottom was another signature.
James Carter.
I stood so quickly that my chair scraped backward.
"Why was my brother handling a DNA test involving my daughter?""
Dr. Mercer looked terrified.
"Because he claimed there was a question about the baby's biological father.""
I stared at him.
"Who?""
The doctor swallowed.
"He never gave me a name.""
I paced across the room.
Emily had loved me.
I had never doubted that.
But someone had spent years making decisions about my daughter without my knowledge.
And James had been at the center of all of them.
Daniel placed a hand on my shoulder.
"Michael, don't jump to conclusions. We need the original genetic report.""
I nodded slowly.
Then Dr. Mercer reached into his briefcase one final time.
"I kept something else.""
He placed a sealed envelope on the table.
"James gave me this the night Lily was born. He told me to destroy it.""
I opened it.
Inside was a laboratory report.
The date was five years earlier.
The test involved three people.
Emily Carter.
Michael Carter.
And James Carter.
I looked at the final section.
*Paternity comparison: Inconclusive pending additional testing.*
But beneath that result was a handwritten instruction.
Do not release to Michael Carter.
I looked up.
"Why was my brother included in this test?""
Dr. Mercer lowered his head.
"Because James claimed he might be Lily's biological father.""
The room went silent.
Then my phone vibrated.
A message from Mrs. Henderson.
*Michael, please call me immediately. Lily has disappeared.*
I couldn't breathe.
Another message appeared.
*Someone showed her a photograph of her mother and told her they knew where Mommy was. Lily went with them.*
I grabbed my phone.
"Daniel, call the police!""
Because whoever had taken my daughter knew exactly which secret would make a five-year-old girl follow them.
May you like
And I was beginning to understand that the most dangerous part of my brother's plan had never been the money.
It had always been Lily.
