Chapter 10: The Sister They Buried Alive

I read the hospital visitor log three times.

James Carter.

My brother's signature was unmistakable.

Beneath it, someone had written that Patricia Cole had been refused access to a patient who had requested protection.

I looked at Vanessa.

"Why did Emily's sister use a different last name?""

Vanessa shook her head.

"I don't know. James told me Patricia was dead. He said Emily had no living family.""

"Then why did Emily leave her name in that photograph?""

"Because Patricia was the person she trusted most.""

Daniel took the document from my hands.

"There's another issue. This log doesn't prove what happened inside the hospital. We need the original medical records and testimony from the staff.""

The investigator standing beside him nodded.

"We've already identified the nurse who signed the admission notes. She's retired, but we have an address.""

I looked at him.

"Where?""

"Marietta, Georgia.""

I immediately stood.

"Let's go.""

Daniel stopped me.

"Michael, you're not going anywhere without security. If James knows we've found this record, he may already be looking for Patricia.""

I looked at Vanessa.

"Does he know about this photograph?""

She shook her head.

"Not from me.""

I believed that she was frightened.

I wasn't sure I believed anything else.

Before leaving, I called Lily's temporary caregiver, Mrs. Henderson, who had been looking after her since the wedding was canceled.

"How is she?""

"She's doing well, Michael. We had breakfast, and she's drawing pictures.""

"Please don't let anyone pick her up except me or Daniel.""

"Of course.""

Then I heard Lily's voice in the background.

"Daddy!""

Mrs. Henderson handed her the phone.

"Hi, princess.""

"Daddy, I made something.""

"What did you make?""

"A picture of Mommy.""

My throat tightened.

"Can I see it when I get home?""

"Yes. I drew her with wings.""

I smiled sadly.

"She would love that.""

Then Lily asked, "Did you find the lady Mommy wanted you to find?""

I looked at Daniel.

"How did you know about that?""

"Mommy told me her sister was hiding.""

My heart stopped.

"What did you say?""

Lily continued.

"She said Aunt Patty would come back when it was safe.""

I closed my eyes.

Emily had told our daughter about her sister.

But I'd never known.

"Did you ever meet Aunt Patty, sweetheart?""

"Once.""

"When?""

"When Mommy was still here.""

I couldn't speak.

Lily added, "She gave me a little silver necklace. Mommy said I had to keep it safe.""

I immediately asked Mrs. Henderson to check Lily's jewelry box.

A few minutes later, she sent a photograph.

A small silver pendant.

On its back were two engraved initials.

P.C.

Patricia Cole.

I showed Daniel.

He nodded slowly.

"That may help us establish the relationship.""

At eleven-thirty, we arrived at a modest house in Marietta.

An older woman opened the door.

She had gray hair, glasses, and a walking cane.

"Mrs. Patricia Cole?"" the investigator asked.

"Yes.""

He showed his identification.

"We'd like to ask you about Emily Carter.""

The woman's expression changed.

For a moment, she looked as though she might close the door.

Then she looked directly at me.

"You're Michael.""

I nodded.

She covered her mouth.

"Oh, Emily.""

Her eyes filled with tears.

"Come inside.""

We sat in her living room.

Photographs covered one wall. Among them was a picture of two young girls standing beside a Christmas tree.

I recognized Emily immediately.

The other girl had the same eyes.

Patricia.

"Why didn't Emily tell me she had a sister?"" I asked.

Patricia looked down.

"She wanted to. But James made sure she couldn't.""

I leaned forward.

"What did he do?""

"Years ago, when your company was still small, James discovered that Emily had access to financial records. He convinced her that if she told you about his transactions, you'd lose everything.""

"That's not a reason to hide an entire family.""

Patricia nodded.

"He also told her I was involved in something illegal. He forged documents and made it look like I was stealing money from your company.""

Daniel wrote everything down.

"Did you believe him?""

"No. But by then, James had already contacted my employer and accused me of fraud. I lost my nursing job. Emily tried to help me, but he threatened to take legal action against her.""

Patricia wiped her eyes.

"Eventually, we stopped speaking publicly. We stayed in contact secretly.""

I looked at the photograph of Emily.

"What happened the night of the accident?""

Patricia's hands began trembling.

"I was working at the hospital when she arrived.""

"Was she alive?""

Patricia nodded.

"She was conscious when they brought her in.""

My heart seemed to stop.

"She survived the crash?""

"Yes.""

I gripped the armrest.

"Then why did everyone tell me she died at the scene?""

Patricia looked at me.

"Because James told them to.""

Daniel leaned forward.

"Mrs. Cole, are you saying Mr. Carter interfered with the medical treatment?""

"I'm saying he had no right to make the decisions he made that night.""

I felt sick.

"What decisions?""

Patricia began crying.

"Emily was asking for you. She kept saying she needed to tell you something about the brakes.""

I could barely breathe.

"Did she receive treatment?""

"Some. But James arrived before the doctors finished evaluating her. He claimed he was her legal representative and that you had authorized him to handle everything.""

"That's impossible. I never authorized anything.""

"I know.""

Patricia opened a drawer and removed a small notebook.

"I copied the notes before they disappeared from the hospital system.""

Daniel examined the pages.

One entry was underlined.

Patient conscious. Requests husband. States vehicle malfunction was intentional.

I stared at the words.

Then Patricia handed me another document.

It was a discharge and transfer authorization.

My name appeared at the bottom.

But the signature wasn't mine.

I looked up.

"Who signed this?""

Patricia's voice cracked.

"James.""

May you like

Then she whispered:

"He didn't just keep you away from your wife, Michael. He signed the order that stopped the hospital from transferring her to the trauma center.""
