Chapter 9: The Enemy We Never Saw Coming

The front gates opened slowly.
The security team entered the property without hesitation.
They moved like they owned the place.
Because apparently, they did.
The man walking behind them was older.
Elegant.
Calm.
He wore a dark suit and carried a leather folder under his arm.
He didn’t look angry.
That made him more frightening.
Arthur stepped forward.
“You shouldn’t be here.””
The man smiled.
“Neither should you.””
The agents immediately positioned themselves between us.
“Identify yourself.””
The man looked at them.
“Richard Vale.””
The name meant nothing to me.
But Arthur reacted instantly.
His face lost color.
Claire noticed.
“Who is he?””
Arthur didn’t answer.
Richard smiled.
“I see she doesn’t know.””
I looked at Arthur.
“Know what?””
Richard opened the folder.
“Your future husband was never the person running the operation.””
My stomach tightened.
“What operation?””
Richard looked around the mansion.
“The Mercer family has been moving money through companies for years.””
Arthur interrupted.
“Enough.””
Richard ignored him.
“Daniel was only a useful puppet.””
The room became silent.
I looked at Arthur.
Then Richard.
“What are you saying?””
Richard turned toward me.
“I’m saying Daniel Mercer was desperate because he wasn’t the owner of anything.””
He opened the folder.
“He was working for me.””
The words hit like a wave.
Daniel.
The billionaire heir.
The man everyone feared.
A puppet.
Richard placed several documents on the table.
“These show every payment Daniel received.””
The agent picked them up.
His expression changed.
“This is bigger than Mercer Holdings.””
Richard smiled.
“Of course it is.””
Arthur stepped forward.
“Why are you here?””
Richard looked at him.
“Because you ruined the arrangement.””
“What arrangement?””
Richard looked at me.
“The wedding.””
My skin went cold.
“The wedding was supposed to transfer control of Emma’s company.””
I clenched my fists.
“How do you know?””
Richard smiled.
“Because I helped create the plan.””
Claire whispered:
“Oh my God.””
Richard continued.
“Daniel was supposed to marry you, obtain your assets, and disappear his debts.””
I stared at him.
“And when I refused?””
His smile faded.
“Then Daniel became reckless.””
A painful silence followed.
The bruises.
The accident.
The threats.
All because a group of powerful people wanted what I built.
The agent stepped forward.
“Mr. Vale, you are admitting involvement in financial crimes.””
Richard laughed softly.
“No.””
He looked at the agents.
“I’m admitting Daniel was never smart enough to hide anything.””
Then he turned to me.
“But you were.””
I frowned.
“What?””
Richard studied me.
“You spent eight months collecting evidence.””
A chill ran through me.
“How do you know that?””
He smiled.
“Because someone inside your investigation reported to me.””
The room went silent.
My heart dropped.
Someone else.
Another betrayal.
Richard looked toward the hallway.
“Bring him in.””
The security team moved.
A man was pushed forward.
I recognized him immediately.
The same investigator who had helped me gather evidence.
The same man who promised Daniel would be exposed.
The same man who told me I wasn’t alone.
He looked ashamed.
“Emma…”
I couldn’t speak.
Richard smiled.
“Now you understand.””
He placed the folder down.
“Your wedding wasn’t the beginning of Daniel Mercer’s downfall.””
He looked at me.
“It was the beginning of a much larger war.””
Then he leaned closer.
“And the person who started it…”
May you like
He pointed at the man beside him.
“…was someone you trusted from the very beginning.””
