Chapter 7: The Confession Hidden in the Dark

The file appeared on the recording device like a warning.

*CONFESSION_FINAL_AUDIO.*

I stared at the screen.

Claire looked at me.

“What is it?””

I couldn’t answer immediately.

Because a part of me already knew.

Whatever was inside that file had been hidden for a reason.

I pressed play.

For three seconds, there was only static.

Then a voice.

Victoria Mercer.

Cold.

Controlled.

“You need to understand something, Daniel. Emma is becoming a problem.””

My breath stopped.

Claire covered her mouth.

The recording continued.

Daniel’s voice followed.

“She doesn’t know anything.””

“She knows enough,” Victoria replied.

“She’s asking questions. She’s collecting information.””

A chair moved.

A glass touched a table.

Then Daniel spoke again.

“Then I’ll handle it.””

The audio became louder.

Clearer.

“I warned you before, Daniel,” Victoria said.

“Fear works until someone stops being afraid.””

I felt my hands go cold.

The room around me disappeared.

All I could hear was their voices.

Planning.

Discussing.

Like my life was just another business problem.

Claire whispered, “Emma…”

I raised my hand.

I needed to hear everything.

Daniel’s voice came through the speaker.

“The accident was supposed to scare her.””

My heart slammed against my chest.

Not kill me.

Not hurt me.

Scare me.

As if that made it better.

Victoria answered.

“But you lost control.””

Silence.

Then Daniel said something that made my entire body freeze.

“She wasn’t supposed to wake up that quickly.””

Claire stepped backward.

“No…”

I closed my eyes.

The hospital lights.

The machines.

The doctors telling me I was lucky.

Daniel sitting beside my bed holding flowers.

Pretending to be worried.

Pretending to be the man who saved me.

He had been the reason I almost died.

The recording continued.

Victoria’s voice became sharper.

“You should have ended it before the wedding.””

Daniel laughed quietly.

“She has nowhere to go.””

“She has evidence.””

“She has nothing that can hurt us.””

I looked down at the device.

He really believed that.

He believed I was nothing.

Then another voice appeared.

A man.

Someone I didn’t recognize.

“Mr. Mercer, the documents are ready.””

Daniel answered.

“Good. After the wedding, everything transfers.””

Claire looked at me.

“What documents?””

I thought of the bank records.

The hidden accounts.

The missing money.

The empire built on lies.

But there was something bigger.

The recording continued.

Victoria asked:

“And the ownership transfer?””

Daniel replied:

“Once Emma signs the marriage contract, her company shares become mine.””

I felt dizzy.

My company.

The small design firm I built before meeting Daniel.

The one thing I owned that had nothing to do with the Mercer name.

He wasn’t just trying to control my life.

He was trying to take everything I created.

Claire grabbed my arm.

“Emma, we need to leave.””

But before we moved, another sound came from the recording.

A door opening.

Then a voice.

A voice I recognized.

Arthur Mercer.

My blood ran cold.

Because Arthur had known.

He had been there.

The recording ended with his voice.

“I heard everything.””

Silence.

Then Victoria whispered:

“Arthur?””

The file stopped.

Nobody spoke.

Claire looked at me.

“Your father-in-law knew?””

I didn’t answer.

Because I didn’t know what hurt more.

The betrayal from Daniel.

Or the possibility that someone could have stopped him and chose not to.

My phone rang again.

This time, it was the agent.

I answered immediately.

“Emma, where are you?””

“At an old office building.””

There was a pause.

Then his voice changed.

“You need to leave now.””

“Why?””

“We found something.””

“What?””

His next words made my stomach drop.

“Daniel Mercer wasn’t acting alone.””

I looked at Claire.

The agent continued.

“We found evidence that someone inside law enforcement has been helping him erase records.””

The line went quiet.

Then he added:

“And Emma…”

May you like

“Yes?””

“The person who authorized the evidence destruction signed it with Arthur Mercer’s name.””
